A qualified stunt coordinator (or another person qualified for the specific action) plans the sequence, assesses hazards, selects appropriate personnel and equipment, coordinates with affected departments, supervises testing and rehearsal, changes the plan when conditions demand it, and obtains each performer’s consent before the stunt.
That framework comes from U.S. entertainment-industry safety and labor materials. It is a set of responsibilities, not a universal drill with a fixed number of repetitions, a mandatory mat, or a prescribed rehearsal length.

What a stunt coordinator is responsible for
A coordinator’s job is to make a filmed action sequence repeatable and controlled, not to improvise a fight for the camera. SAG-AFTRA describes coordinators as people who design and choreograph sequences, cast performers with appropriate skills, and consult a specialist when an action requires expertise beyond their own. The union’s standards say a coordinator should take “any appropriate actions necessary to ensure the safety of performers or others on the set.” SAG-AFTRA’s Stunt Coordinator Standards & Practices sets out that responsibility.
Qualified supervision is a prerequisite
When a producer requires scripted or unscripted stunt activity, an individual qualified by training and/or experience in planning, setting up, or performing that type of stunt is to be engaged and present, according to Section 28.B.(1) of the SAG-AFTRA agreement as reproduced in the union’s Producer Resources for Stunt Coordinators.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
“Qualified” must be read in relation to the action. Experience coordinating a grounded stage punch does not automatically establish expertise in falls, driving, water work, weapons, or another specialty. SAG-AFTRA’s producer resource describes a general eligibility process with a minimum of 500 working days, but explicitly cautions that the threshold is not a competency test and does not certify a particular specialty.
Specialists fill gaps in expertise
If the sequence calls for knowledge outside the coordinator’s experience, the coordinator can consult an appropriately skilled specialist. That is a safety decision, not an admission that the coordinator has failed. Matching the person supervising an action to the action’s actual demands is more meaningful than relying on a title alone.
The safety process surrounding rehearsal
Industry-wide Safety Bulletin #4 places planning, setup, testing, rehearsal, modification, and recommendations about personnel and equipment with the stunt coordinator or another qualified individual. The bulletin does not prescribe one order or one technical method for every fight, so productions adapt the process to the location, performers, choreography, schedule, and equipment.

- Review the action. Break down what the script, blocking, camera plan, and performance require. Identify which movements are performed by actors, which are performed by doubles, and which elements need specialist input.
- Assess hazards and prioritize risks. SAG-AFTRA’s 2026 hazard-assessment workshop describes identifying hazards, deciding which risks demand priority, selecting controls, and documenting findings. Its simulated location scout is educational context rather than a mandatory fight-rehearsal checklist.
- Choose qualified people and suitable equipment. The coordinator recommends the personnel and equipment needed for the planned action. Choices are scene-specific; the cited safety materials do not mandate a particular pad, mat, prop, weapon, camera system, or protective item.
- Set up and test. Before a full-speed run, the qualified team establishes the working area and tests the planned action and equipment. Testing can reveal that a movement, prop, surface, or piece of timing needs to change before performers attempt the complete sequence.
- Rehearse under supervision. Rehearsal is controlled practice, with the coordinator directing the action and monitoring whether the plan works as expected. A rehearsal is not automatically safe merely because it is slower than the take.
- Modify the plan when evidence changes. If testing, rehearsal, a location change, a performer’s concern, or another department’s setup exposes a new risk, the coordinator revises the plan and rechecks the changed elements.
- Confirm consent before performance. Safety Bulletin #4 states that “The performer must consent to participation in the stunt prior to its performance.” Consent is required before the stunt, not assumed from an earlier casting conversation.
This sequence is a practical reading of the responsibilities in Safety Bulletin #4: Stunts; it is not a claim that every production must use these exact seven stages or a fixed number of runs.
How risk assessment improves a fight rehearsal
Risk assessment turns a vague instruction such as “make the fight safe” into decisions that can be checked. The coordinator and relevant departments identify what could go wrong, determine which risks matter most, select controls, and record the result. The 2026 SAG-AFTRA workshop, Hazard and Risk Assessment for Action Sequences, presents that approach through a simulated location scout; it does not establish a binding regulation.
| Assessment question | Decision the team needs to make |
|---|---|
| What exactly must the performer do? | Define the movement, contact, travel, timing, and interaction with the environment so the coordinator can match the action to qualified people. |
| What conditions could change the risk? | Check the actual rehearsal area, surfaces, clearances, props, lighting, weather or other location conditions, and any department setup that affects movement. These are examples of conditions to examine, not a universal checklist. |
| Which risk deserves priority? | Address the hazards with the most serious potential consequences or the greatest likelihood first, then document the controls selected. |
| Did testing confirm the plan? | Use a controlled test to determine whether the action and equipment behave as expected. If not, stop and redesign rather than adding speed or repetition. |
| Has anything changed? | Reassess after a location, performer, prop, camera position, costume, surface, or schedule change. A previously acceptable plan may no longer fit the new conditions. |
The purpose of documentation is practical: it gives the team a shared record of identified hazards, controls, and changes. It should not be confused with a guarantee that an action carries no risk.

Coordination with the rest of the set
A fight rehearsal involves more than the people throwing or receiving movements. SAG-AFTRA says coordinators should proactively engage appropriate personnel, including assistant directors, special-effects personnel, and props, and should strive to have performers attend relevant safety meetings. The coordinator’s plan therefore has to fit the work of departments that control timing, objects, effects, space, and access.
Recommended Free Tools
Assistant directors and scheduling
Assistant directors help integrate rehearsals and set activity into the production schedule. Early communication gives the coordinator time to arrange qualified personnel, prepare the space, and address changes instead of compressing safety decisions into the minutes before a take.
Props and special effects
Props and effects can alter the action’s conditions. A changed object, effect cue, or placement may require the coordinator to test and modify the choreography again. The safe assumption is that a department change affecting the action is a reason to communicate and reassess, not something to work around silently.

Performers and doubles
Performers should know which portions they are expected to rehearse and perform, who is supervising, and how a stunt double fits into the sequence. SAG-AFTRA’s Actors and Stunts Workshop encourages actors to learn how rehearsals are run and how to work with a stunt coordinator and double. The workshop’s “What do you do?” framing covers roles that call for a fight, fall, drive, run, swim, or jump; it is guidance for participants, not evidence of a standardized rehearsal procedure.

Every production’s choreography is different, but a responsible rehearsal should make the action and the decision-making understandable. Before participating, an actor can ask:

- Which movements am I expected to perform, and which will a double perform?
- What has been tested, and what is still being changed?
- What is the agreed signal to pause or stop?
- Which departments are involved, and what changes would require another safety check?
- What alternatives exist if I do not consent to a particular stunt?
These questions do not replace the coordinator’s judgment. They help the performer understand the plan and raise a concern before an action is attempted. Consent must be obtained before the stunt; a performer should not be pressured to treat silence, prior participation, or a desire to keep the schedule as consent.

What the 500-working-day figure does—and does not—mean
| Item | What the source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 500 working days | SAG-AFTRA’s current producer resource describes this as a minimum general eligibility standard in its coordinator process. | It is not proof that a person is competent for a particular fight, specialty, location, or piece of equipment. |
| Training and/or experience | The agreement language requires an individual qualified by training and/or experience in the type of stunt to be engaged and present. | It does not create one universal résumé formula or substitute for scene-specific assessment. |
| Coordinator standards | The standards assign responsibility for protecting performers and others and for coordinating with appropriate personnel. | They do not supply a fixed rehearsal duration, repetition count, gear list, or camera-review procedure. |
What is not standardized by these sources
The available standards are intentionally broad. They do not establish:
- A mandatory number of rehearsal hours, repetitions, or run-throughs.
- A universal mat, pad, weapon, prop, costume, or protective-equipment specification.
- A required camera angle, video-review workflow, or playback rule.
- A guarantee that a rehearsal is risk-free because it is slow, simulated, or supervised.
- A single fight-choreography system that applies to every production.
When a production needs those details, the coordinator and qualified specialists determine them through the action’s risk assessment, testing, and the conditions of that particular set. Treating an invented “standard” as mandatory can create false confidence and may conflict with the actual plan.
When conditions change or a rehearsal feels unsafe
A safe process has a route for stopping and changing course. A performer or crew member should raise a concern immediately. The coordinator can pause the action, examine the new information, consult the affected department, modify the choreography or setup, and test the revised plan before continuing. A location change, altered prop, different performer, costume restriction, new camera position, or unexpected surface can all make reassessment sensible.
The coordinator’s authority does not eliminate communication. Assistant directors, effects, props, performers, doubles, and other relevant personnel need to know when a change affects their work. If the revised action is a different stunt in substance, the production should treat it as a new planning and consent decision rather than relying on approval for the earlier version.
Where these standards apply
The cited materials come from U.S. entertainment labor and industry organizations. They are useful safety principles, but they are not automatically the law in every country, state, union, production type, or workplace. Local occupational-safety rules, collective agreements, insurance requirements, and production policies may add obligations. A production should identify the rules that govern its jurisdiction and contract in addition to using qualified stunt supervision.
The practical test of a safe rehearsal
A well-run rehearsal is one in which the responsible person is qualified for the action, the hazards and controls have been considered, affected departments are coordinated, the action and equipment have been tested, performers understand their roles, changes trigger reassessment, and consent is obtained before performance. The sources support that framework while leaving technical choices to competent, scene-specific planning.
