The safest way to adapt a video game is not to copy every mission. Identify what players actually value—its emotional promise, characters, world, tone and sense of participation—then preserve that identity while rebuilding the experience as a complete film. Every change should pass two tests: does it carry something essential from the game, and does it make the movie clearer, more dramatic and satisfying for someone who has never played?
That may lead to a compressed retelling, a selective remix of the original plot or an entirely new story set in the game’s world. None is automatically more faithful. Faithfulness is measured by what survives meaningfully on screen, not by how many familiar scenes appear.

Define what “faithful” means before writing scenes
A game and a movie give an audience different kinds of authorship. Players can choose routes, fail repeatedly, explore at their own pace and inhabit a character through controls. A film fixes the viewpoint, timing and sequence for everyone in the theater. Literal duplication therefore cannot guarantee a faithful adaptation; it can simply produce a crowded plot that has lost the game’s emotional reason for existing.
A peer-reviewed study of audiences for two game-to-film franchises identified motivations that included entertainment, an expanded experience, personal fan development, community or franchise legitimization, and connection with the film. The study does not name the franchises or report a sample size in its surfaced abstract, so its themes should guide questions rather than be treated as a universal profile of all players. It does establish an important principle: fans can want a film to add to their relationship with a property, not merely replay it.

Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, described the studio’s approach this way: “At the heart of any great game, film or tv show, there is a compelling story with rich characters.” He also said the goal is to reach “the heart of what makes each of its game IP resonate and connect with millions of gamers, and transfer that faithfully into the world of film.” Those are studio-executive perspectives, not a guarantee of success, but they provide a useful test for a script.
Use a one-sentence identity statement
Before an outline, complete this sentence: People love this game because it lets them feel ______ while they ______ in a world where ______. The first blank captures the emotional promise; the second describes the player’s meaningful activity; the third names the world or conflict that gives the promise its shape.
Then write a second sentence: The movie will deliver that promise by ______. If the answer is only “by showing the same cutscenes,” the adaptation has not yet translated the game. If it names a filmable source of emotion—an impossible loyalty, a dangerous investigation, a fragile alliance, a moral compromise—it gives the screenplay a workable foundation.

Do not assume that the most famous feature is the most important one. A game may be remembered for combat but loved for companionship, or marketed around a fictional universe while players return for its humor and atmosphere. Diagnose the property before deciding what to retain.
Map the appeal across five dimensions
| Dimension | Questions to answer | What a film might preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Story or premise | What situation makes this game distinct? What question keeps the player moving? | The central dilemma, discovery, quest or reversal, even if events are reordered. |
| Characters and relationships | Whose bond, rivalry or transformation creates the emotional investment? | The relationship’s pressure points, choices and changed behavior—not every optional conversation. |
| World | What rules, history, places and visual details make this setting recognizable? | A coherent selection of locations, institutions, creatures, technology and social rules. |
| Tone and texture | Is the appeal comic, mournful, tense, wondrous, satirical, horrific or some deliberate combination? | Rhythm, production design, sound, performance style and the kinds of scenes the movie permits. |
| Player experience | What does doing the thing feel like? Discovery, mastery, stealth, improvisation, collecting clues or choosing whom to trust? | A cinematic equivalent that makes the audience feel the same pressure or release without pretending they are controlling the hero. |
Mark each dimension as essential, supporting or replaceable, and attach evidence from the game itself: recurring player behavior, the scenes people quote, the character decisions that provoke debate, or the world details that appear in fan discussions. This is an internal creative diagnosis, not a score that can be objectively calculated.
Separate iconography from identity
A recognizable weapon, costume, creature or line of dialogue can welcome fans, but an inventory of references is not fidelity. Ask what each prominent element does. A signature object may express a character’s history, establish a rule of the world or trigger a crucial choice. Keep it when that function matters; redesign or omit it when it is only decoration. A movie earns recognition by making familiar details meaningful in the new medium.
Translate mechanics into cinematic consequences
Gameplay systems often carry meaning indirectly. Repetition can communicate exhaustion; limited resources can create anxiety; choosing a dialogue option can reveal the player’s values; free exploration can make a world feel larger than the plot. A camera cannot reproduce the player’s hand on a controller, so the screenplay must preserve the consequence or feeling rather than the interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the function-transfer test
- Name the player action. Write down what the player does: sneaks past guards, retries a difficult section, searches rooms for supplies, chooses between allies or explores an optional area.
- Name the dramatic function. Decide what the action makes the player understand or feel. It might create vulnerability, reveal character, force a sacrifice, reward curiosity or demonstrate mastery.
- Find a filmable equivalent. Use blocking, editing, performance, sound, production design or a decisive action to create a related effect for a passive audience.
- Remove the interface residue. Health bars, quest markers, tutorial prompts and repeated failed attempts usually belong to the game’s operating system, not the movie’s world. Keep one only when it has an in-story purpose.
- Check the result without game knowledge. A viewer should understand the stakes and emotional turn from what appears on screen, not from an assumption that they know the mechanic.
For example, if a game’s stealth system makes every movement feel dangerous, a film does not need a long sequence that reproduces each patrol pattern. It can concentrate risk into one encounter in which a character must choose between remaining hidden and helping someone. The specific mechanic changes; the pressure it created remains.
Compress repetition, preserve escalation
Games can sustain a loop because the player’s learning is part of the pleasure. A feature normally needs progression: each major set piece should alter the situation, expose information or raise the cost of failure. Combine similar missions, move a revelation earlier or let one location serve several narrative functions, but preserve the pattern of escalation that made the original journey satisfying.

Choose between retelling and a new story
There are two legitimate adaptation strategies. A retelling reshapes the game’s principal narrative for a feature-length arc. An expansion tells a new story in the established world, using its rules, themes and recognizable identity. The choice should follow the source’s strongest appeal.
| Decision axis | Retelling the game | New story in the game world |
|---|---|---|
| Source fidelity | Directly protects an important plot, protagonist journey or relationship. | Protects the world’s rules, tone, themes and social or historical logic while creating new events. |
| Screen-story coherence | Can use a known dramatic spine, but must compress branches, exploration and repetition. | Can be built for a film’s causality from the first page, without explaining every game quest. |
| Fan recognition | Offers familiar turning points and characters, with risk that differences invite scene-by-scene comparison. | Rewards knowledge through locations, factions, motifs and rules, while avoiding a promise to reproduce a particular campaign. |
| Accessibility | Needs context so newcomers understand why the famous events matter. | Can introduce the world through an original protagonist or conflict, but must establish why this setting is distinctive. |
| Creative opportunity | Can dramatize omitted material or deepen side characters around the known arc. | Can explore a period, place or viewpoint the game format left outside its main story. |
When a retelling is the better fit
Choose a retelling when the game’s central relationship or plot revelation is the primary reason people care. Outline the minimum chain of events required to make that emotional journey land. Optional missions can become one composite sequence; multiple antagonists can become a single force with a clear motive; branching outcomes may need one authored choice. Tell the audience what is being protected: perhaps the bond between two characters, the moral cost of a victory or the transformation of a reluctant hero.
When expansion is the better fit
Choose a new story when the world, premise or systems are more valuable than one canonical campaign, or when repeating the game would turn discovery into a checklist. The British Film Institute’s discussion of game adaptations uses Fallout as an example of a fresh story within a recreation of the game world. That approach can be faithful when the new plot obeys the setting’s logic and carries its tone, conflicts and questions rather than borrowing names as surface decoration.
State the boundary in the pitch. “A new investigation in the same city during the game’s timeline” tells fans what continuity to expect. “A loose inspiration” signals a different contract. Ambiguity about the contract is a common source of disappointment.
Build a change ledger for the screenplay
Adaptation requires omission and addition. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s account of PlayStation Productions describes deciding what to leave out and what to add, including opportunities to deepen side characters. Make those decisions visible to the writing team instead of allowing them to emerge accidentally during drafts.
| Source element | Keep, combine, omit or add | Purpose of the change | Test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major mission or chapter | Keep or combine | Preserve a turning point while meeting feature length. | Does the new sequence change the protagonist’s choices or only display familiar scenery? |
| Playable traversal | Compress or omit | Move between meaningful story beats without simulated travel time. | Would removing it erase a discovery, relationship beat or rule of the world? |
| Optional companion material | Combine or expand | Give a supporting character a stronger motivation or payoff. | Does the added material illuminate the source’s themes rather than compete with them? |
| Game antagonist or faction | Reframe if necessary | Create a legible objective and escalating pressure for a two-hour story. | Can a newcomer explain what this force wants and why it threatens the hero? |
| New protagonist, location or event | Add | Translate an interactive premise into a focused dramatic point of view. | Would the game’s identity still be recognizable if the new element were removed? |
Every large change should have one plain-language justification: clarify a motivation, improve cause and effect, create a feature-length arc, translate an interactive experience or reveal a perspective the game could not explore as effectively. If the only justification is that a scene looked good in a trailer, reconsider it.

Design characters for a fixed point of view
Players can project themselves onto a silent avatar, choose a personality through dialogue or spend dozens of hours with a companion. A film has to make choices about voice, behavior and interiority. Preserve the character’s defining tension, not every customizable option.
Protect the relationship engine
Write the central relationship as a sequence of changed expectations. What does each person want from the other at the beginning? What do they fear the other will discover? Which practical goal forces them together, and what choice makes separation more costly than cooperation? These questions turn a broad game bond into scenes with pressure.
Give side characters a dramatic job
A supporting character can serve as a witness, rival, conscience, temptation or source of specialized knowledge. If the game allowed long optional conversations, select the few that change the lead’s understanding. If a side character is expanded for the movie, connect the addition to a theme or decision already present in the property. More screen time alone is not depth.

Resolve avatar ambiguity consciously
If the game’s hero is customizable, decide what the movie is saying by making that person specific. If player projection is central, keep the character’s history economical and let actions carry identity. Either choice can work; an indecisive mixture often produces a protagonist who feels like a placeholder.
Make the world recognizable without turning the film into a glossary
World-building should arrive through conflict. Introduce a rule when someone must obey or break it, a faction when its interests collide with the hero’s, and a historical fact when it changes the meaning of a present choice. Avoid pausing the story to explain every term that a game could teach gradually through exploration.
Choose a small set of anchors
- One spatial anchor: a landmark, settlement or environmental condition that gives the world a distinct physical identity.
- One social anchor: a custom, institution, faction or power relationship that shapes daily life.
- One rule anchor: a technological, magical or biological rule that creates the film’s specific dangers and possibilities.
- One tonal anchor: a recurring image, sound, joke or ritual that tells viewers how to feel inside this world.
Let those anchors recur with variation. A familiar location should reveal a new consequence, not appear solely for a screenshot. A signature object should force a choice. Fan service works best when it moves the story.
Serve fans and newcomers in the same scene
Existing players want meaningful recognition, while first-time viewers need a self-contained movie. The Arts Management and Technology Laboratory has described this as a tension between fidelity to existing fans and changes that can reach audiences beyond them. Solve it at the scene level rather than by creating separate “fan” and “general audience” material.
Use layered recognition
At the surface, a fan may recognize a location, visual motif or line. At the story level, that detail should reveal character or establish a rule. At the emotional level, it should pay off a promise the movie has already made. A newcomer can follow the scene’s immediate stakes; a player receives an additional connection.

When a proper noun or faction appears, attach its relevance to an action: someone loses access, gains protection, violates a taboo or learns a dangerous fact. Do not rely on a wall of lore. If an explanation can be removed without changing anyone’s decision, it probably belongs in background design rather than dialogue.
Test two cuts of the same sequence
In an early table read, ask players what they recognized and ask nonplayers what they understood. The ideal scene produces recognition without requiring prior knowledge. If only players can explain the stakes, add context. If only nonplayers enjoy the scene and players cannot identify the source’s emotional signature, revisit the adaptation diagnosis.
Evaluate choices on five decision axes
When two possible scenes, plots or character choices compete, compare them on these axes. They are decision prompts, not a numerical scorecard.
- Source fidelity: Does this preserve the property’s distinctive story, characters, world and emotional logic?
- Screen-story coherence: Are the stakes, causes and consequences clear without gameplay knowledge?
- Fan recognition: Does the choice create a meaningful connection rather than a superficial reference?
- Accessibility: Can someone who has never played understand the situation and care about the people in it?
- Creative opportunity: Does the change reveal a perspective, relationship or consequence that film can explore particularly well?
If a choice scores strongly on only recognition but weakly on coherence and accessibility, it is likely a cameo or Easter egg, not an adaptation solution. If it scores strongly on coherence but weakly on source fidelity, ask whether the new material still belongs in this game’s world or would work just as well under another title.

Use a practical development workflow
- Collect the fan promise. Review the game’s central story, characters, world rules, tone and player activities. Write the identity statement and list three non-negotiable qualities.
- Choose the adaptation contract. Decide whether the project is a retelling, a selective remix or a new story in the world. State what continuity the film will and will not claim.
- Write the screen engine. Identify the protagonist’s goal, the opposing force, the irreversible midpoint choice and the final cost. These must work for a viewer with no controller.
- Map mechanics to feelings. For each major gameplay loop, record its emotional or narrative function and the cinematic device that will replace it.
- Create the change ledger. List every major omission, combination and addition with a purpose and a test.
- Outline for escalation. Arrange sequences so that each one changes knowledge, allegiance, capability or risk. Remove travel and repetition that do none of those jobs.
- Draft the newcomer path. Mark where the audience learns the world’s rules, the protagonist’s objective and the consequences of failure. Fill gaps with behavior, not encyclopedia dialogue.
- Layer fan rewards. Add recognizable details only where they serve character, conflict, tone or payoff. Track whether each one is understood at the surface level and meaningful at the emotional level.
- Read it with two audiences. Use players and nonplayers in table reads or rough screenings, then separate confusion about the movie from disappointment that it is not a literal replay.
- Revise the contract, not just the scenes. If feedback reveals that viewers expected a different kind of adaptation, clarify the premise and continuity before polishing individual moments.
Common failure modes and precise fixes
The cutscene compilation
Symptom: The screenplay moves from famous event to famous event, assuming recognition supplies momentum.
Fix: Combine events around the protagonist’s changing objective. A scene stays only if it creates a decision, reveals a cost or alters a relationship.
The lore lecture
Symptom: Characters recite history, factions and terminology before anything is at stake.
Fix: Introduce one rule through a conflict that requires someone to act. Delay secondary vocabulary until it changes a later choice.
The generic action movie with game costumes
Symptom: The plot could be moved to another setting without changing its emotional logic.
Fix: Make the world’s rules cause the conflict. Replace a generic chase, conspiracy or monster attack with a dilemma only this property can generate.
The unfilmable player avatar
Symptom: The lead has no viewpoint because the game allowed unlimited customization or silent projection.
Fix: Choose a focused desire and contradiction. Keep room for audience identification through behavior and restraint, but give the film someone who can make consequential choices.
The hostile correction of fan expectations
Symptom: Familiar elements are changed mainly to prove independence from the game.
Best Value
Fix: Explain the purpose of each departure. A surprising change can be welcome when it deepens a theme, clarifies causality or opens a perspective the game did not provide.
The reference pile
Symptom: Costumes, objects and lines accumulate, but none affects the plot.
Fix: Give each retained reference a dramatic function or cut it. Recognition should reward attention, not interrupt the story.

MIDiA Research reported an international consumer survey of 9,019 respondents conducted in the fourth quarter of 2024 across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, South Korea and Brazil. The listed national samples sum to 9,019; that figure should not be presented as a representative global census, and it does not establish that any particular adaptation method causes success.
An Arts Management and Technology Laboratory article published in 2026 reported that 77% of gamers, citing National Research Group work from 2024, considered it essential that an adaptation’s writer and director genuinely love the source material. The underlying NRG report and methodology were not directly reviewed for that article, so treat the percentage as secondary reporting rather than a definitive industry benchmark.
Sensor Tower’s summary of game activity and revenue around The Last of Us shows that engagement and revenue can follow different patterns. It is useful as a warning against treating commercial performance as proof that fidelity—or any single creative formula—caused an outcome. Audience studies, industry interviews and cultural histories can inform your decisions; they cannot replace a clear dramatic test for the screenplay.
The final test before you call the adaptation faithful
Ask a player to describe what they love about the game without naming mechanics. Ask a nonplayer to describe what the movie is about after one viewing. Compare the answers with the identity statement from development. If the movie preserves the emotional promise, makes its own causes and consequences legible, and uses recognizable elements to carry rather than substitute for meaning, it has adapted the game instead of merely displaying it.
