Choose the asset and blockchain network you will accept, make the instructions explicit, and verify the receiving flow before promoting it. Crypto tips are only one option: compare them with platform-native payments and check the current rules for links on the platform you use.
Choose how viewers will pay

When comparing options, check supported assets and networks, service and network fees, who controls the keys, how funds settle or convert, regional availability, viewer friction, alert integrations, and refund or dispute handling. Do not assume that a payment will trigger an on-stream alert: verify any provider-to-overlay integration yourself.
Set up a crypto tip option
- Choose direct wallet or hosted checkout. With a direct wallet, viewers transfer to an address you control. With a hosted service, follow its setup process and confirm how funds reach your payout wallet and whether they are converted or settled in another asset. NOWPayments describes its donation tools and payout-wallet setup in its creator guidance.
- Name the asset and network. State exactly which coin or token you accept and which blockchain network the viewer must use. The same token may exist on multiple networks; the network and destination must match.
- Secure the receiving wallet. Protect access and recovery credentials. Never publish or show a seed phrase or private key. NOWPayments describes its service as non-custodial and says it does not store funds or hold wallet private keys (provider explanation); in a non-custodial setup, securing your own wallet credentials remains your responsibility.
- Create the viewer instructions. Generate a public address or QR code, or copy your hosted link/button. Put it where viewers can find it without obscuring the stream. Before adding an external link, check the current rules for your actual platform; the sources cited here do not establish one universal policy.
- Test the flow. If practical, send a small test amount and verify that the payment reaches the intended destination on the intended network before you promote the instructions widely. Blockchain transfers are generally irreversible once confirmed, and NOWPayments’ terms state this for its service (terms of use).
- Keep records. Record the date, amount, asset, network, transaction identifier, fees, and—where relevant to your local rules—the value at receipt and any later conversion or disposal.
Understand fees, confirmations, and security
Fees are not one fixed number
A payment may involve both a provider service fee and a blockchain network fee. NOWPayments says network costs depend on the blockchain, network load, and desired confirmation speed (fee explanation). Provider fees can depend on configuration and change, so check the current fee schedule for your setup; a low or absent service fee would not necessarily mean there is no network fee.
Make the network unambiguous
Before publishing payment instructions, verify the receiving address, asset, and network in the wallet or provider interface. A transfer sent to the wrong address or on the wrong network may be difficult or impossible to recover. Do not ask viewers to send a token over a network you have not confirmed you can receive and access.

Consider volatility without treating stablecoins as risk-free
A stablecoin may reduce exposure to ordinary price swings, but it still carries issuer, network, liquidity, and depeg risks. NOWPayments lists stablecoins among supported asset categories and presents them as an option for avoiding volatility; that is the provider’s description, not a guarantee (provider guidance).
Use “tip” accurately and separate charity fundraising
If a viewer is supporting you personally, “crypto tip” or “payment to the creator” is usually clearer than “charitable donation.” Twitch says money given to a streamer who later promises to donate it is not considered a charitable donation or tax-deductible by Twitch; it points creators to its Charity tool or systems that let viewers donate directly to a charity (Twitch charity guidance). If you are fundraising for a charity, use an appropriate route that sends contributions to the charity rather than implying a personal tip is a charitable gift.

Check local tax and recordkeeping requirements
There is no single tax treatment that can safely be applied to every streamer’s crypto receipts: rules depend on jurisdiction and on the nature of the receipt and any later conversion or disposal.
