To play a SteamVR game, connect a headset using a method that its model supports, run Steam and SteamVR on a compatible PC, then check that the game supports your headset and controllers. Some headsets connect to the PC by cable; supported Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus, and PICO models can use Steam Link to stream PC VR over a shared Wi-Fi network. Neither connection method works with every headset.
How the connection works
SteamVR is the PC software layer that runs VR content and provides tools such as a status monitor, settings, room-boundary tools, SteamVR Home, and an in-VR dashboard. It does not determine how a headset connects: that depends on the headset model. Valve describes a wired setup for Vive, while Steam Link offers wireless streaming only for its listed headset families and supported versions.

The PC must be able to run SteamVR and the individual game, and the game must work with your headset and controller setup. Use the game’s Steam page to check its VR Support details rather than assuming that a SteamVR listing guarantees compatibility.

Wired connection
A tethered headset uses the video and USB connections specified for that model. For its Vive setup, Steam Support calls for a VR-ready computer with a free HDMI port on the graphics card and a free USB port, plus a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and internet access. If that Vive setup lacks a free HDMI port, Steam’s FAQ describes a DisplayPort-to-Mini-DisplayPort cable as an option. Confirm port and accessory compatibility for your exact headset; those instructions are not universal. Keep the cable long enough to reach the play area without creating a trip hazard.

For Vive room-scale play, Steam specifies a clear minimum area of 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft) and a maximum distance of 5 m (16 ft) between base stations. Steam says seated and standing experiences have no minimum space requirement. These are Vive-specific figures; check the setup guidance for other headsets.
Wireless PC streaming with Steam Link
Steam Link streams games from a PC running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus, and PICO headsets. It is a network-streaming option, not a direct cable connection, and the supported-model and software-version list can change. Check Steam’s current Steam Link compatibility and setup page for your exact headset.

- Sign in to Steam on the PC and install SteamVR.
- Connect the PC and headset to the same network. Steam specifies a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum capability; Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is recommended.
- Install Steam Link from the headset or applicable phone store, open it, and follow its connection instructions.
Steam’s listed Steam Link minimums include Windows 10 or newer and a GTX 970 or better / RX 570 or better GPU, with Radeon exceptions noted on its support page. Its recommendations include 16 GB of RAM, an RTX 2070 or better, and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. Treat these as Steam Link specifications, not a promise of performance in every game; consult the support page for its current requirements.
Windows Mixed Reality
For Windows Mixed Reality, Steam Support’s platform-specific instructions describe setting up the headset and Windows Mixed Reality Portal, then installing and launching SteamVR. On a game’s Steam page, look for the “Windows Mixed Reality” VR Support label and other compatibility details. Steam says unlabeled titles may also work, so the label is a useful signal rather than a definitive list of everything that can run.

Check PC and game requirements
Valve’s SteamVR page currently lists the following baseline PC requirements. They are starting points for SteamVR, not a guarantee that a particular game will run smoothly: individual app and content requirements vary.
| SteamVR specification | Listed requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4590 / AMD FX 8350 equivalent |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent |
| Recommended graphics | GTX 1060 / Radeon RX 480 equivalent |
| Other | Broadband internet; USB 2.0 or newer; HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer |
These specifications are the ones on Valve’s SteamVR product page, accessed in 2026. The page says Steam Client support for Windows 10 and later began on January 1, 2024. A game can need more than SteamVR’s baseline, so check the game’s own requirements and VR Support details before installing.

Troubleshoot a black headset display
If SteamVR starts but the headset shows no video, Steam Support’s troubleshooting flow advises checking that the headset link box and monitor are plugged into the same functioning GPU and video ports. Its instructions also describe enabling Direct Mode in SteamVR settings. When Direct Mode is working, the headset displays VR content instead of behaving like a desktop monitor. Follow current instructions for your headset and graphics hardware if those checks do not resolve the issue.
