Deactivation is a reversible break: Facebook hides your profile, but does not delete your photos, posts, or videos. Deletion starts a process intended to permanently remove your account and content after a region-dependent cancellation window. Neither choice guarantees that every trace disappears: messages you sent can remain in recipients’ inboxes, and Facebook says some backup or other retained copies may persist.
What changes when you deactivate or delete Facebook?

What happens to your data if you deactivate Facebook?
Deactivation hides your profile from other people, but it does not erase the account’s photos, posts, or videos. Facebook describes deactivation as an option for someone who wants a break without deleting all their content. You can reactivate the account later.

Deactivation is not the same as disconnecting every Facebook-linked service. Messenger and Facebook Login may remain available, depending on your settings and how you use them. However, Facebook says you cannot use Facebook login to access Meta Quest products or information while the account is deactivated.

What happens to your data if you delete Facebook?
Deletion is the permanent option, but the process is not necessarily immediate. Facebook says you can cancel a deletion request by logging in within 30 days, while noting that the cancellation period varies by region. The 30-day figure is therefore not a universal guarantee; check the instructions Facebook presents for your account and location.
Once the applicable cancellation period ends, Facebook says the account and its information cannot be recovered. It says removing posted content may take up to 90 days from the start of the deletion process. During that time, the content is not accessible to other people using Facebook.
The 90-day estimate does not mean that every copy vanishes everywhere. Facebook says backup copies may remain after that period for disaster recovery, software errors, or other data-loss events. It also says it may retain information for legal issues, terms enforcement, or harm prevention. Its comparison guidance separately notes that some log records may remain in its database but be disassociated from personal identifiers.

Not necessarily. Facebook says copies of messages you sent may remain in recipients’ inboxes, where those people can still see them. That is distinct from content stored in your account: deleting your account does not remove a recipient’s copy.

Facebook also describes some database log records as potentially remaining without personal identifiers. These are separate cases; neither supports assuming that every trace is immediately erased or that every message remains visible.
What to check before deleting your account
- Save what you want to keep. Facebook recommends downloading a copy of your information, including photos and posts, before deletion. Download Meta Quest information too if relevant; Facebook says content added to the account cannot be retrieved after deletion.
- Review Facebook Login dependencies. Make a list of apps and websites where you sign in with Facebook. Confirm each provider’s alternate sign-in or account-recovery process, since Facebook Login will end and you may need to contact those providers.
- Decide whether Messenger continuity matters. Deletion ends Messenger access. Deactivation may leave Messenger available, depending on your settings and use.
- Check Meta Quest before removing the account. If you used Facebook login for Quest, review relevant information, purchases, achievements, and store credits. Facebook warns that associated information and purchases may be lost.
- Choose based on how certain you are. Deactivation preserves the option to return. Treat deletion as permanent once the region-specific cancellation window has passed.
How to find the deactivation or deletion controls
Facebook’s current help navigation points to Accounts Centre, but labels and paths can vary by interface. Use the account-specific instructions displayed when you make the choice rather than relying on an old screenshot.
