The practical community route on Steam Deck is Waydroid, which runs a full Android system inside a Linux container. It is separate from Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games, and it does not guarantee that every Android app will work.
Can SteamOS run Android apps?
Yes, through a community setup such as Waydroid—not as a standard SteamOS feature. Waydroid’s documentation describes using Linux namespaces to run a full Android system in a container on GNU/Linux. Its runtime uses a customized LineageOS-based image that the project currently documents as based on Android 13. Waydroid documentation

That distinction matters: Waydroid provides an Android environment rather than translating each Android app into a native SteamOS app. Its presence does not mean that an app is supported, or that Google Play, DRM-protected services, anti-cheat, or streaming functions will work.

Waydroid and Proton do different jobs
| Technology | What it runs | How it works | Steam Deck status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waydroid | Android system and apps | Runs a full Android system in a Linux container. | Community setup; requires a compatible configuration. |
| Proton | Windows games | Valve describes Proton as a compatibility layer that lets Windows games run on SteamOS. | Valve’s Windows-game compatibility path; it is not an Android runtime. Valve: Steam Deck compatibility |
Installing Proton will not make an Android APK run, and installing Waydroid is not a way to run Windows games. The two address different operating systems and app formats.

What to check before installing an Android app
APK architecture
Steam Deck uses an x86_64 host, and an APK’s supported CPU architecture matters. Waydroid specifically warns that APKs found online may support ARM only and will not work on x86_64. Check the APK’s architecture before installing; a generic download link does not establish compatibility. Waydroid: Install and run Android applications
App dependencies and services
An app may rely on Google services, DRM, anti-cheat, hardware features, or other dependencies beyond its basic Android package. The general Waydroid setup instructions do not establish support for those requirements. There is no app-by-app compatibility matrix in the cited project guidance, so treat each app as a separate compatibility question.

How you want to use it
The community installation route is based on Steam Deck Desktop Mode and a working graphical session. That is different from a turnkey Game Mode feature. Confirm how the current bundle exposes apps and whether its controls and launch behavior suit your use case before relying on it.

The Steam Deck installation instructions come from a community-maintained bundle, not a Valve-supported Android feature. Its stated prerequisites include Desktop Mode, a working graphical session, a sudo password for the deck user, internet access, and at least 10 GB free in the home filesystem for a new Android installation. The maintainer also requires a compatible, verified bundle for the SteamOS userspace; development or main branches are experimental. - Install an APK: From a Waydroid environment, the documented command is
waydroid app install xyz.apk. Replacexyz.apkwith the actual APK path or filename. - Launch by package name: Use
waydroid app launch com.foo.bar, substituting the Android package name forcom.foo.bar. - Protect data and check after updates: Back up important Android data before SteamOS updates or repair steps, then check the bundle’s current compatibility and recovery instructions.
Valve says Flatpak installs software on the writable portion of storage and warns that software installed outside Flatpak, such as through pacman, may be wiped by a SteamOS update. That is why an installation or repair route should be checked against both Valve’s desktop guidance and the current community bundle instructions. Valve: Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ

Waydroid’s own documentation currently describes an Android 13-based image. The SteamOS community bundle lists Android 13 as its normal path and offers separate Android 16 images as experimental options. Its README reports that Waydroid 1.6.3 booted, ran, and shut down Android 16 correctly on a particular SteamOS Beta build; it also reports lifecycle unreliability for Waydroid 1.5.4 with Android 16 on a particular Stable build. Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What to expect in practice
- It is a separate Android environment: Waydroid runs Android in a container; it is not a SteamOS-native Android layer.
- App compatibility is conditional: Architecture, app dependencies, and the particular Waydroid and SteamOS configuration can all matter.
- Setup is community-maintained: Installation and post-update recovery depend on the bundle’s compatibility with the current SteamOS userspace.
- Desktop Mode is the documented starting point: The cited setup requirements specify a working desktop session, not a Valve-provided Game Mode integration.
