The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) gives 12–14% moisture as a drying range and identifies seed below 12% moisture as safe for storage. Check a sample for germination before planting: storage time alone cannot tell you whether a seed lot is still viable.
Prepare and store paddy seed step by step
- Select and clean: Keep mature, full seed and remove trash and damaged grains. IRRI advises selecting and cleaning seed before drying. See the IRRI drying guidance.
- Dry before sealing: IRRI’s fact sheet recommends drying seed to 12–14% moisture before storage. Its separate paddy equilibrium-moisture guidance identifies seed below 12% as safe for storage. These are distinct figures: aim to dry well, and do not treat the upper end of the preparation range as equivalent to the stated safe-storage threshold. A moisture meter is useful where available; the guidance does not establish a universal household method for measuring moisture accurately without one. Drying time varies, so there is no reliable fixed number of hours or days for every home.
- Cool, then seal: Let dried seed cool before packing. Put it in a clean, airtight, moisture-proof container such as a jar with a tight lid. Seal only seed that is dry; sealing damp seed can trap moisture. Avoid leaving the container open in humid air. IRRI explains that non-airtight containers allow seed to absorb moisture and lose viability.
- Label and store: Mark the variety and packing date on the container. Keep it in a cool, dry, clean place, away from moisture and unnecessary opening.
- Test before sowing: Use the germination test below rather than relying on the packing date alone.
Choose a container that blocks moisture
The important choice is not simply the container material: it is whether the container seals against moisture exchange and suits the quantity of seed. For a small household lot, a glass jar with a tight lid is practical; another clean, moisture-proof sealed container can work as well. In tropical rainy conditions, IRRI warns that seed in jute bags or clay pots can reabsorb moisture even if it was dried well initially. Those breathable containers are therefore poor choices when the priority is retaining seed viability.

IRRI’s technical germplasm material names Kilner jars, foil packets and metal cans as moisture-proof examples for hermetic storage. That specialized conservation context does not mean ordinary household seed should be prepared to germplasm-bank moisture levels. A 2025 Assam study summarized by FAO AGRIS reported that Super Grain bags maintained lower moisture and improved germination by 11.2% compared with gunny bags during its five-month study. That result belongs to the reported study and comparison; it is not a guaranteed benefit for every bag, seed lot or home climate. A 2022 Nepal study record lists comparisons among metal bins, plastic bins, Super Grain bags, PICS bags, plastic bags with jute sacks, jute sacks and earthen pots, but the record does not provide results that support ranking those options.

IRRI recommends a paper test using a representative sample. Take seeds at random from the lot rather than choosing only the largest or healthiest-looking grains. The fact sheet’s procedure is:

- Soak the sample for 24 hours.
- Place 100 seeds on moist paper or a paper towel. Keep the paper moist, not waterlogged, and put it in a closed container or plastic bag.
- Count germinated seeds after three days and again after five days.
IRRI considers at least 80% germination good seed. The paper test is a viability screen, not a promise of the same result in a field: IRRI notes that soil emergence can be 70% or less of paper-test germination. Poor results are a reason to seek fresh seed or adjust the sowing plan rather than assume the stored lot will establish evenly.
How long can paddy seed be stored?
IRRI says seed can remain good for up to one year if stored properly. Treat that as a conditional upper guideline, not a guaranteed shelf life for every variety, moisture level or household climate. Test germination before planting, especially when storage conditions were humid or the container was opened repeatedly.

Seed paddy is not the same as rice for eating
Seed must remain alive and capable of germinating, so its moisture needs differ from grain kept for consumption. IRRI’s paddy guidance distinguishes grain below 14% moisture from seed below 12% for safe storage. Do not apply an eating-grain threshold to seed or assume that seed is viable just because it appears dry. For regulated seed production or treatment requirements, check the agriculture authority for your location; requirements vary and are not established by this general guidance.
