A Steam demo is a separate app in your Library, linked to the full game. You can install and remove it like other library items, but what happens to your progress depends on the game: its developer controls where saves are stored, whether Steam Cloud syncs them, and whether the full game can use a demo save. Uninstalling a demo does not guarantee that a save will either remain or be deleted.
How Steam demos work
Steamworks treats a demo as a separate app with its own App ID, associated with the full game’s App ID. A demo may be offered from the full game’s store page or through its own page, so it appears as its own Library entry rather than simply as a mode inside the full game. Developers can also configure the demo and full game to share installed content.

To try one, find the game’s Steam store page or its demo listing and use the demo’s install or download control. Once installation finishes, launch it from your Library. Button wording and page layout can vary, but the demo will be listed as its own app.

Only if the developer has made it possible. Steamworks describes an option for a demo to save to the full game’s Steam Cloud storage, allowing someone who buys the full game to continue from the demo. It is an available configuration, not a promise that every game supports transfer. The full game also needs to be able to read the save.

Saves may be kept on your device, synchronized with Steam Cloud, or handled in both ways. Steam Cloud itself is optional and its behavior is configured by each developer. Check the game’s developer documentation, support page, or community information for a definitive answer about that title’s demo-save compatibility and save location. A Steam Cloud indicator on the store page can help establish whether the game supports the feature, but it does not by itself identify every file that syncs.
How to uninstall a Steam demo
- Open your Steam Library and select the demo’s entry.
- Use the game’s management or uninstall option in the Steam client. Labels and menus may vary with client updates.
- Confirm the removal. This removes the installed demo; it is not the same as uninstalling the Steam client or deleting save files manually.
Because a demo is a separate library app, remove the demo entry rather than the full game if that is what you intend to uninstall. If the demo is no longer available to new players because its developer deactivated it, existing Library owners can still see and uninstall it, but Steamworks says they can no longer launch it.
What uninstalling means for your save
There is no universal outcome. Uninstalling the demo removes its installed game content, but save handling depends on the developer and the title. A local save may remain outside the game’s installation folder, while another game’s save may be managed differently. Steam Cloud may preserve synchronized files, but it is not enabled or configured identically for every game. Do not assume that removing the demo will preserve a save, erase it, or make it usable by the full game.

Check Steam Cloud before removing or replacing files
If the game uses Steam Cloud, let Steam finish syncing before uninstalling or making manual changes. When files have changed in two places without synchronization, Steam may show a conflict and ask which version to keep. Steam Support says it cannot automatically choose between those versions; compare the timestamps shown in the conflict prompt with when you last played, then select deliberately. Offline Mode can delay syncing and contribute to conflicts.
Steam Cloud is not a substitute for a separate backup of an important save. Steam Support cautions that it may not be able to recover lost cloud data. The Steam Backup feature also should not be treated as a guaranteed backup of third-party saves: developers may keep saves outside the game files Steam backs up, so copy a known save separately.

Uninstalling a demo is not uninstalling Steam
Removing one demo from your Library is a narrower action than uninstalling the Steam client. Steam Support’s Windows instructions for removing the client warn that installed game content is removed too; if you want to keep installed game files during that process, the instructions recommend moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. That advice concerns removing Steam itself, not the ordinary uninstall of a demo.
What to verify for a specific game
- Whether the game lists Steam Cloud support and whether its developer explains what is synchronized.
- Where the developer stores local saves for your operating system.
- Whether the developer says demo progress can transfer to the full game.
- Whether you have a separate copy of any local save you would be unhappy to lose.
Steamworks documents the platform options, but the game developer determines how those options are used. Its demo documentation explains the separate app identity and shared-cloud option.
