AMOLED can use less display power than LCD when content is dark, because its pixels emit their own light and black pixels can switch off. An LCD relies on a backlight, so dark pixels do not turn off corresponding parts of that light source. This is a conditional display-power advantage—not a guarantee that an AMOLED phone will last longer on a charge.
Why dark content can use less power on AMOLED
AMOLED is a type of OLED display: each pixel produces its own light. A black pixel can be off, and darker or lower-luminance images can require less display energy than bright images on the same panel. OLED power therefore depends partly on the colors and brightness being shown. A 2019 study of mobile-device display power models describes this color-dependent behavior: Fully automated OLED display power modeling for mobile devices.
This is why a dark interface can reduce display power on an AMOLED screen, particularly when it replaces large bright areas with dark ones. It does not mean every dark screen uses no power: illuminated pixels still consume energy, and the phone’s other components continue to draw power.
How LCD power differs
An LCD controls light from a backlight to form an image. Its display power is principally associated with backlight brightness; making an image pixel black does not switch off the backlight behind that pixel in the way an AMOLED pixel can turn off. Lowering brightness can reduce power on either display type, but dark content alone does not create the same pixel-off saving on LCD. The 2019 display-power modeling study describes this distinction between OLED pixel colors and LCD backlight power.

What the reported savings do—and do not—show
There is no universal percentage by which AMOLED saves battery compared with LCD. Published figures use different devices, comparison baselines, and test conditions, and display energy is not the same as total phone battery life.
- Dynamic AMOLED versus PLS TFT LCD: An IEEE 2025 comparative analysis reports up to 72.49% lower energy for Dynamic AMOLED in its tested comparison. This is a study-specific display-energy result, not a typical saving or a prediction of whole-phone runtime. Its search-result abstract does not provide enough detail to normalize the figure across phones and workloads. See Power Consumption Analysis in LCD and AMOLED Display Technologies for Mobile Devices.
- Samsung low-power OLED panel: Samsung Display said in 2021 that one smartphone OLED panel used up to 16% less power than the company’s previous smartphone OLED panels, and that it was first used in the Galaxy S21 Ultra. This compares OLED panels with each other, not AMOLED with LCD. See Samsung Display Unveils New Low-power OLED Display for Smartphones.
- OLED dark-mode result on a laptop: Samsung Display reported 25% less OLED display energy in dark mode in a laptop test using MobileMark 2018, with 9.9 hours in white mode and 11 hours in dark mode. This manufacturer-reported laptop result is not a smartphone estimate. See Samsung OLED laptops proven to save up to 25 percent more display energy in dark mode.
These figures have different baselines and apply to particular comparisons. They cannot be combined into a general AMOLED battery-saving percentage.

Does AMOLED mean a phone will last longer?
Not necessarily. Total runtime also depends on screen brightness, what the phone is doing, and the particular panel and device implementation. A phone with AMOLED may use less display power than an LCD phone under dark-content conditions, yet still have shorter overall battery life if its other components or usage draw more power.
To compare two specific phones, look for whole-device battery tests that use comparable workloads, screen brightness, network conditions, and device generations. Display labels alone do not establish which phone lasts longer. The cited evidence does not establish a current, matched cross-model runtime ranking.

How to make a fair display-power comparison
- Match the content: Dark interfaces and black areas can reduce AMOLED pixel emission; bright or white screens light more OLED subpixels.
- Match brightness: Higher brightness generally increases display power on both technologies, though they control light differently.
- Compare actual panels and phones: “AMOLED” does not specify the efficiency of a particular panel. The 2025 comparison concerns specific Dynamic AMOLED and PLS TFT LCD implementations.
- Use whole-device results for battery life: Keep workload, brightness, network conditions, and device generation comparable before attributing a runtime difference to the display.
