By preparing some shader work before a game needs it, the feature can reduce load times and in-game stuttering during the first few launches of supported OpenGL and Vulkan games. Valve does not promise a higher frame rate or a benefit in every game.
What shader pre-caching does
A shader is code used by a graphics system to create visual effects. If a game needs a shader variant that has not been prepared for the relevant graphics setup, compiling it can add work during startup or play. Pre-caching moves some of that preparation earlier: Steam can download pre-compiled data when it is available for the hardware and driver in use.

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which Valve describes as Linux-based. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on SteamOS. Those facts give useful platform context, but Valve’s public notes do not document every stage of shader handling across a Windows game, Proton, and the Deck’s graphics driver. The feature should not be taken to mean that every game follows one identical compilation path.

In a May 2019 Steam Client update, Valve described reworking its shader system to download and pre-compile a game’s collection of Vulkan pipelines. The update also said some shader-data downloads appear in Steam’s download manager. This is a description of the system in that update, not evidence that every game downloads a complete pipeline collection today.

In practical terms, pre-cached data gives Steam a way to do some preparation before the game reaches the point where it needs the relevant graphics work. It does not eliminate all shader compilation, and Steam’s notes do not provide a current, Deck-specific implementation diagram.
What performance improvement to expect
Valve’s December 13, 2017 release note says that, where hardware and driver support allow, Steam can download pre-compiled shaders for a specific video card. Valve says this “reduces load times and in-game stuttering during the first few launches” of supported OpenGL- and Vulkan-based games. That is a qualitative claim about early launches—not a measured percentage, a guaranteed reduction, or a promise of higher average FPS.

The potential benefit is most relevant when shader preparation would otherwise happen as the game starts or as it encounters graphics work during play. If compatible pre-compiled data is unavailable, or the game and graphics setup do not support the feature, Steam cannot provide that same preparation. Valve’s notes do not establish what share of Steam Deck games benefit.

Shader pre-caching has trade-offs: downloading data uses bandwidth, and processing shader data takes work. Valve’s historical Linux client notes mention slight additional bandwidth use for shader tracking. A December 2020 client update describes work on incremental Vulkan shader database processing and fixes related to shader processing continuing in the background after a game started.

These release notes do not establish a fixed download size, storage footprint, processing duration, or current per-game behavior on Steam Deck. A shader-related download may appear in Steam’s download manager, but its presence or size should not be treated as a reliable performance forecast.
Should you turn shader pre-caching off?
For most players, pre-caching is best understood as a Steam-managed convenience: it may spend bandwidth and background processing to avoid some work later. If you notice a shader-related download, that alone does not mean something is wrong. Valve’s historical Linux notes mention a setting in a Steam Settings dialog and an environment variable for disabling shader management, but those desktop Linux details are not a current Steam Deck settings path. Do not use them as instructions to edit SteamOS files.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Steam’s public notes cited here do not establish a current Steam Deck menu path or recommend disabling the feature for a particular game. If you are troubleshooting, first distinguish shader-related downloads or background processing from a general performance problem; the available notes do not support a universal fix or a game-specific setting sequence.

What Valve’s documentation does—and does not—establish
- Established: Steam can download pre-compiled shaders when hardware and driver support permit, and Valve describes reduced load times and early in-game stuttering for supported OpenGL and Vulkan games.
- Established historically: Valve described Vulkan pipeline-collection downloads in a 2019 client update and background shader-processing changes in a 2020 update.
- Not established: A universal FPS gain, a specific percentage improvement, fixed cache or download sizes, coverage across all Deck games, or a current per-game control path.
