How Starlink Works: Satellites, Dish Kits, and Plans Explained

Starlink uses a two-way terminal linked to low Earth orbit satellites. Here’s how the dish, router, installation, performance, and Residential versus Roam plans fit together.

Starlink sends internet between a user terminal at your home or on the move and satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). The terminal—often called the dish—connects to a Starlink router, which distributes the connection to your devices over Wi-Fi. For most household users, Residential is the fixed-address plan family; for travel, Roam is the category to compare. Which hardware and plan you can order, and what performance to expect, depends on your country, service address, and current offer.

How does Starlink internet work?

Starlink is a two-way satellite internet service, not a TV dish that only receives a broadcast. Your outdoor terminal sends and receives data through satellites passing overhead. Those satellites route traffic through Starlink’s network and, where available, use optical links between satellites. The route can vary; a connection does not always follow one identical path.

Starlink’s technology page describes its constellation as “a constellation of thousands of satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, at about 550km, and cover the entire globe.” The company contrasts that approximate 550 km altitude with 35,786 km for geostationary satellites. Because the Starlink satellites are much closer, the service can have lower latency than traditional geostationary satellite internet.

Starlink gives an approximate comparison of around 25 ms latency for Starlink versus 600+ ms for geostationary satellite service. That is the company’s explanatory comparison, not a guarantee for every user. Its specifications list typical land latency of 25–60 ms, with higher latency possible in some remote locations. Latency is the time data takes to travel between endpoints; lower latency generally makes interactive tasks such as video calls and online gaming feel more responsive.

What is the difference between a Starlink dish and router?

The dish, also called the user terminal, is the outdoor satellite-facing equipment. The router handles the local network: it takes the Starlink connection and lets phones, computers, TVs, and other devices connect, usually over Wi-Fi. The service also requires power, cables, and a mount or stand. Starlink’s specifications describe the kit generically as a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount.

Starlink’s Standard 4X information lists a terminal, kickstand, Router 3, 15 m Starlink cable, AC cable, and power supply. The UK Standard product page describes a software-assisted manual-orientation dish. Those details are specific to that product listing and market—not a universal parts list or description of every Starlink generation. Other models can differ in shape, field of view, orientation, power draw, included router, and mounting options.

Before ordering, check the product page for your country and service address for the exact generation, included equipment, power requirements, environmental rating, mounting choices, and compatible plans. “Standard” and other hardware names or configurations may vary by region, and no single dish is the right choice for every fixed or mobile use.

Which Starlink plan fits home use or travel?

Residential is intended for personal or household use at a fixed land-based service address. Starlink’s support information says Residential plans include unlimited data, but names and speed tiers differ by market. Depending on the region, listings may include Residential and Residential Lite, or options such as Max and capped 100 Mbps or 200 Mbps plans. Availability and price are location-specific, so the offer shown for your service address is the one to rely on.

Roam is the plan family to investigate if you use Starlink while travelling, such as in a motorhome or camper, or away from your registered location. Terms are plan- and country-specific: check the current offer for data allowances, what happens after an allowance is used, whether in-motion use is permitted, and cross-border or coastal restrictions. Moving a Residential service to another address or travelling with it is subject to Starlink’s plan terms; do not assume a Residential plan allows unrestricted mobile use.

Business users can compare Local Priority, described by Starlink as connectivity within a country, with Global Priority, intended for maritime and global connectivity. Starlink says priority data receives network precedence. These are business services with distinct equipment and terms, rather than substitutes for consumer Residential or Roam plans.

How fast is Starlink, and what affects performance?

Starlink’s undated specifications, accessed October 5, 2026, give broad typical ranges of 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload, and 25–60 ms land latency. These are not promises for an individual connection; the specifications also provide plan-specific ranges, and actual results may be lower.

Performance can vary with location, time of day, network use, service-plan priority, installation environment, weather, obstructions, cabling, power, and customer equipment. A plan’s stated speed tier and priority can matter as much as the hardware, so compare the current plan details for your address rather than treating a headline range as a guaranteed speed.

Where should you install the Starlink terminal?

Choose a location with an unobstructed view of the sky so the terminal can maintain links as satellites move overhead. Starlink’s installation guide identifies branches, poles, and roofs as examples of obstructions that may interrupt service. Use the Starlink app as a placement aid before settling on an installation spot.

A stand or permanent roof or wall mount may help position the terminal, but the suitable accessory depends on the hardware generation and the mounting surface. Check compatibility before buying or installing a mount, and plan for a route for the cable and access to power. The official kit listing for your region is the source for what is included; a separate mount may be needed for a permanent installation.

What to check before choosing Starlink

  • Use: Choose a fixed-address household plan for home service or compare Roam terms for travel and use away from the registered location.
  • Availability: Confirm the plans and hardware shown for your country and service address; names, tiers, and offers vary by region.
  • Mobility terms: For Roam, verify data allowances, post-allowance behavior, in-motion permission, and geographic restrictions in the current plan terms.
  • Hardware: Confirm the dish generation, included router and cables, power needs, and mount compatibility on the regional order page.
  • Installation: Check for a clear sky view with the app and account for obstructions, cable routing, and power at the chosen site.
  • Performance: Treat published speed and latency figures as typical ranges, not guarantees; location, congestion, plan priority, weather, and setup all affect results.
