It is not a new Linux distribution or kernel. The project describes a Swift shell, first-party apps, its own Wayland compositor and X11 server, and a framework port from Flutter to Swift. Its version 0.4.0 is explicitly marked as early development, so the practical way to try it is in a virtual machine—not as the desktop for important daily work.
What Starling is—and what “one app” means
Starling is a desktop environment that can be installed as a login session on Ubuntu 26.04. The project describes a single, app-like desktop system, but that does not mean every part is literally one process. The shell, compositor, framework, and apps still have distinct responsibilities; the design ambition is to make them work as parts of one integrated desktop rather than as a conventional stack of loosely related desktop components.

The project README summarizes its state this way: “Early development — version 0.4.0. The desktop boots as a real session, runs its own compositor and apps, and installs from a .deb on a stock Ubuntu 26.04.” That is a statement from the project, not an independent compatibility or reliability assessment. How does Starling actually work?
The desktop as a managed canvas
Starling’s central interface idea is to treat application surfaces as rectangles that the system can position, clip, and animate. The desktop canvas behaves more like an app surface, giving the shell a unified way to present windows and desktop controls. This is the architectural sense in which the desktop is “one app”: a common system coordinates the visual experience, rather than the claim that Linux applications or every desktop component have disappeared.

Shell, compositor, and framework have separate jobs
- Shell: provides the desktop interface and its controls.
- Wayland compositor: manages window surfaces and implements a set of Wayland protocols. Starling supports floating and tiling window management, spaces, an overview, a dock, and a launcher.
- X11 server: the project says X11 clients can run through its in-tree server.
- Framework: Starling is porting a framework from Flutter to Swift; the maintainers report 137 test files for that port.
- Applications: first-party apps run within the environment, while supported third-party clients can use its display and windowing stack.
The repository reports a 50.8 MB package, nine first-party apps, and 26 dependency packages. These are project-reported figures, not independent measurements; the repository page was checked on October 7, 2026, and does not say when each figure was measured. What can you do in Starling today?
Desktop features and bundled apps
The project documents a normal GDM login path, so a user can select Starling as a desktop session after installation. Its documented desktop features include both floating and tiling windows, spaces, an overview, a dock, and an application launcher.

The nine first-party apps are Settings, Files, Terminal, Text Editor, Calculator, App Store, Task Manager, Video Player, and Image Viewer.
Third-party application support
The maintainers report that Wayland applications including Chrome, VS Code, Slack, Discord, Teams, Telegram, IntelliJ IDEA, GIMP, Blender, GNOME Web, and GNOME Text Editor run in Starling; they also say X11 clients can run against the in-tree X server. Treat this as a maintainer-reported list, not an independent audit of compatibility, feature parity, or stability across those apps.

Where it can run—and what is verified
The project documents VM testing with virtio-gpu/virgl and testing on AMD Radeon 780M. Separate reporting describes use with WSL and Remote Desktop, as well as headless-computer scenarios, but those examples are not all independently verified by the project documentation. Software rendering may be slow, so a successful launch in a VM or remote session should not be taken as proof that performance will match a native session on your hardware.
The repository’s documented hardware verification is limited to AMD and virtio-gpu so far. Intel and NVIDIA support and laptop-specific details are listed as future work. Starling’s current platform notes

What is missing compared with a mature desktop?
Starling is a real, bootable session, but the project’s own limitations list makes clear that it is not yet a substitute for a mature desktop environment:

- Desktop portals are incomplete.
- Scaling is effectively pinned to 2.0, and there is no display-mode selection.
- An opt-in runtime for third-party apps is not shipped.
- Documented hardware coverage is narrow, with Intel, NVIDIA, and laptop details still future work.
For people who depend on established accessibility features, broad hardware support, or well-worn handling of device quirks, Starling does not have the accumulated work of mature environments such as GNOME or KDE. Its one-person authorship and early state also concentrate maintenance and review capacity. That is risk context, not evidence that a particular vulnerability has been found.

Trying out Starling on your PC
A virtual machine is the safer first experiment because it keeps an experimental desktop session away from your main installation. The trade-off is that VM graphics can be slower and may not represent how Starling behaves on the target computer’s hardware. Installing the project’s .deb as an Ubuntu login session is more representative of a direct session, but it also puts the experiment closer to the system you use.

The project documents installation from a .deb on stock Ubuntu 26.04. If you try it, follow the current installation instructions in the project repository, and use a VM for the initial test if you do not want to alter your main setup. While Starling remains this new, do not rely on it for sensitive or important daily work.
