To edit only part of a video, choose the operation that matches your goal: trim a clip edge to shorten its beginning or end, split it at an internal point to remove or rearrange footage, or mark an In/Out range and export just that selection. Preview both cut points before exporting, then check that your editor offers the format and quality settings you need.
Choose the right kind of edit
These three operations solve different problems. A trim changes a clip’s outer boundary; a split creates a new edit point inside the clip; a range export makes a standalone file from a selected stretch of a timeline, without necessarily changing the rest of the project.

- Trim: Use this to remove unwanted footage from the start or end of a clip.
- Split: Use this to divide footage at an internal point, then keep, delete, or move the resulting segment.
- Export a range: Use this when you want an excerpt from a longer timeline as its own video file.
Prepare the video and find the section
- Open the video in an editor already available on your device. Controls and features differ between apps and versions, so follow the instructions for the platform you are using.
- Keep the original source intact, or work in a project that preserves it, so you can recover footage if you trim or split in the wrong place.
- Locate the desired start and end in the timeline or clip viewer. Scrub around each point rather than relying only on a rough visual estimate.
Trim the beginning or end
In iMovie for Mac, Apple documents selecting a portion of a clip and trimming it. Select the clip, then adjust its edge to set the new beginning or ending. This changes the visible duration of that clip; it is not the same as making a cut in the middle.
For a one-off excerpt, edge trimming may be all you need if the selected footage is at the start or end of the source. If the wanted section is surrounded by footage on both sides, use internal splits or a selected-range export instead.

Split at an internal point
A split places an edit point where the playhead sits, separating one clip into segments. CapCut documents splitting at the playhead; Apple’s iMovie for Mac guide also covers splitting clips.
- Move the playhead to the first boundary and split the clip.
- Move to the other boundary and split again.
- Select the segment you do not want and remove it, or rearrange the segments if that is the goal.
After deleting a segment, check whether the remaining clips close the gap or leave a blank space in the timeline. Timeline behavior can vary by editor.

Export only a selected range
If the goal is a separate excerpt rather than a changed project, mark its start and end with In and Out points and export the marked range when your editor supports that workflow. CapCut Help documents two ways to do this: use the I/O shortcuts or press Shift+X. The specific-section export feature and shortcuts are described in CapCut’s help page, How to export part of a video.
- Set the In point at the beginning of the excerpt and the Out point at its end.
- Review the marked range to make sure it contains the intended footage.
- Use the editor’s range-export command and choose the available output settings.
CapCut’s instructions describe its workflow; do not assume the same shortcuts or range-export controls exist in another editor.

Preview both cut points before exporting
Play or scrub a little before and after each boundary. Check that the excerpt does not begin mid-word, end too abruptly, include an unintended black frame, or leave a distracting fragment of audio. Adobe’s Premiere guidance describes Trim mode as a way to inspect the outgoing clip’s last frame and the incoming clip’s first frame at an edit.
For a transition between two clips, inspect both sides of the edit: the last frame before the cut and the first frame after it. In Premiere, Adobe documents reviewing those adjacent frames in Trim mode; the exact controls depend on the current version.

Export and verify the resulting file
Export options depend on the editor, platform, device, source media, and app version. CapCut says availability of 2K and 4K output varies with platform, hardware, and software conditions. Check the current export menu rather than assuming a resolution or frame-rate option will be present.

In iMovie, Apple notes that the first clip added determines the project format. If format matters, choose the appropriate first clip and check the project before finishing. Once export completes, open the file and confirm that it plays, starts and ends where intended, and has the expected picture and sound.

When project hardware matters
A basic cut does not require buying extra equipment. For a larger Premiere project, Adobe recommends an additional high-speed drive for media. Treat an external SSD or other fast drive as an optional storage and workflow aid, not a prerequisite for trimming a short video.
Adobe’s Premiere system-requirements page, updated September 9, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM minimum for HD on its listed Windows and macOS configurations. It recommends 16 GB RAM for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher on Windows, and 16 GB unified memory for Apple silicon. These are requirements for the Premiere versions and configurations listed by Adobe, not universal requirements for video editing or every application. Common problems and what to check
- The exported video includes too much footage: Confirm that the intended In and Out points are set, or check whether you exported the whole timeline rather than the marked range.
- A wanted moment disappeared: Undo the edit if possible, or return to the preserved source and reset the trim or split boundaries.
- The cut feels abrupt: Review the last frame before and first frame after the cut, and listen across the boundary for clipped speech or audio.
- The export lacks the resolution you expected: Check the current app and device’s available settings. CapCut says 2K/4K availability depends on platform and hardware, among other conditions.
- The project format is wrong in iMovie: Check the first clip added, since Apple says it determines the project format.
