How Standard 3D Printers Help Labs Build Tools for Bacterial Research

Consumer-grade 3D printers can help labs build tools tailored to bacterial research, but each printed instrument must be assessed for its function, materials, and workflow.

Labs can use standard consumer-grade 3D printers to make and adapt some tools for bacterial research. A 2026 report from Umeå University describes instruments for detecting and manipulating harmful bacteria with laser light, as well as tools for cultivating and measuring biofilms. The work illustrates the value of locally customized equipment—not that a printed part is automatically suitable for every laboratory task.

What researchers have built with consumer-grade printers

Umeå University’s October 5, 2026 report describes work by Daniel Nilsson of the Department of Physics. The reported instruments use laser light to detect and manipulate harmful bacteria, and support the cultivation and measurement of biofilms. The report says Nilsson’s thesis includes a practical guide to designing printed tools and integrating open-source electronics.

Nilsson said, “We have developed a set of instruments that can be manufactured directly in the laboratory by anyone.” He also described the approach as supporting “a more collaborative and needs-driven” way to develop tools. These statements express the project’s aim; the report does not provide enough engineering detail to reproduce or assess the instruments from the news article alone. Umeå University’s report

Earlier example: adapting a printer for microbiology imaging

A 2019 PLOS ONE study repurposed open-source 3D-printer architecture as a time-lapse imaging platform. The researchers adapted the frame to hold a Raspberry Pi camera and used printed joints and an actuator arrangement. They reported applications including bacterial motility, colony growth, microtitre plates, and microfluidic devices.

Why customize instead of buying a standard instrument?

A printed component or adapted frame can be useful when a lab needs a particular holder, movement, enclosure, or fit that is not readily available in its existing setup. Customization can also make a design easier to adapt or repair locally. The 2024 COBLE project—Collection of Bespoke Laboratory Equipment—offers a broader example of modular, printable lab designs intended to be assembled and repaired.

What to validate before using a printed part

Assess each design for its intended use rather than treating “3D-printed” as a single performance or safety category. Before putting a part into a research workflow, check:

  • Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
  • Function and precision: Does the part meet the positioning, movement, or measurement requirements of the experiment?
  • Sample and workflow fit: Does its shape and operation work with the biological sample, container, and surrounding equipment?
  • Material compatibility: Can the selected material tolerate the reagents, mechanical loads, cleaning, and any required sterilization?
  • Build and upkeep: Can the lab reliably reproduce, assemble, calibrate, and maintain the part and any electronics?
  • Evidence for the intended use: Has the specific build been checked under the conditions in which the lab plans to use it?

A University of Reading thesis on microbiology labware reports that its authors mostly used PLA and notes that printer and material settings vary. This is an example of a material used in particular research labware, not evidence that PLA suits every reagent, cleaning method, or sterilization requirement. A separate methods paper describes printed parts it characterizes as easy to sterilize and reuse; that statement should not be extended to other polymers or designs without validation. What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The Umeå University account establishes that consumer-grade printers have been used to develop tools for bacterial research, but it is a news report rather than the underlying thesis. It does not specify printer models, materials, calibration procedures, detailed build files, or validated performance metrics. The earlier imaging study and COBLE project show related approaches; they do not independently validate Nilsson’s instruments.
