A standalone VR headset can run compatible games by itself, but PC VR games are rendered on a computer and streamed to the headset. That connection can be wired or wireless, depending on the headset and app. Wireless streaming removes the cable to the PC, not the headset’s need for battery power—and it depends on a reliable local network.
Standalone games and PC VR use different hardware
In standalone mode, the headset’s own processor runs a game made for that headset’s platform. You do not need to connect a PC, but the game must have a compatible native version.

In PC VR, the computer renders the game and sends its video and audio to the headset. The headset acts as the display and tracking device; connecting it to a PC does not make every PC game compatible with every headset. The game, streaming app, headset model, and PC must all work together.
Meta describes Quest as an all-in-one device powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, but its PC VR options are distinct from native Quest play. Meta documents Quest Link over USB and Air Link over Wi-Fi. Valve’s Steam Link is another wireless route, for supported headsets streaming games from a PC running Steam and SteamVR.

How the main play options compare
| Mode | Where the game is rendered | Headset-to-PC connection | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native standalone | On the headset | No PC connection | Whether the game has a native version for the headset; battery use varies with the game and workload. |
| Meta Quest Link | On the PC | USB cable | Supported Quest model, Meta Quest Link app, PC capability, and a compatible data cable. |
| Meta Air Link | On the PC | Wi-Fi | Quest support, PC capability, and local Wi-Fi conditions. |
| Steam Link | On a PC running Steam and SteamVR | Wi-Fi | Supported headset, Steam and SteamVR setup, PC requirements, router, and the computer’s network connection. |
The best fit depends on the games you want to play, whether your PC meets the relevant app’s requirements, how reliable your network is, and whether you prefer cable-free movement or a direct cable connection. The official requirements cited here do not establish a universal winner for latency or image quality across these methods.
What Steam Link requires
Steam Link’s Meta Store listing publishes requirements for that app—not for Air Link, all PC VR games, or every standalone headset. Its minimum setup lists:

Wireless streaming depends on the local network
With Air Link or Steam Link, the headset receives the PC’s rendered frames over Wi-Fi. That means wireless play relies on the network between the computer and headset, not just on having a modern headset. Steam’s listing recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E and a wired connection from the computer to the network; it names Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz as its minimum router requirement.
Those are Steam Link-specific published requirements. They are not a guarantee of smooth streaming, nor should they be treated as universal requirements for Air Link or other apps. Before changing hardware, check the requirements for your chosen streaming app and whether your PC can connect to the router by Ethernet. A newer router alone does not guarantee a good result.

Battery life: use estimates, not guarantees
Meta’s device comparison, updated September 3, 2026, lists approximate battery life of 2 hours for Quest 3 and 2.5 hours for Quest 3S. These are broad device estimates, not guaranteed runtimes for PC streaming or for a particular game. Actual time can vary with workload, settings, wireless conditions, battery age, and other factors.

Those figures were the company’s estimates at that time, not a current test or a promise for every model, software version, game, refresh rate, or network setup. Meta also said USB Link results could depend on how much power the PC provides, so a wired connection should not be assumed to keep every headset charged.

Check compatibility with your headset, the connector and charging behavior, comfort, and how any extra cable will route before buying; performance and runtime gains depend on the specific product and setup.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right setup
- Choose standalone play when the game has a native headset version and you want to play without a PC connection.
- Choose Quest Link when you have a supported Quest, a suitable PC, and want a USB connection; use a compatible data cable rather than assuming any charging cable will work.
- Choose Air Link or Steam Link when your headset and PC meet the relevant app’s requirements and your local network can support streaming. Steam Link’s supported models and requirements are specific to that app.
- Plan for power for longer sessions in any mode. Streaming wirelessly removes the PC cable but does not remove battery use.
