When a phone or tablet stops receiving software updates, it may still switch on—but become less secure, lose access to current apps, or stop meeting its owner’s needs. That can prompt an early replacement and add to electronic waste. Software support is one part of the problem, alongside repairability, cost, parts availability, reuse, and recycling.
How software support can shorten a device’s useful life
Operating-system updates can fix bugs, protect data, and keep a device compatible with changing apps and services. If support ends, the hardware does not instantly become useless; rather, its practical value can decline. Some users may accept the security and compatibility trade-offs, while others may decide the device no longer works well enough for them.

The European Commission’s 2023 impact assessment explains the replacement mechanism: “Insufficient software support can lead to premature product replacement, since the product is no longer functioning as required (e.g. lower performance).” It also notes that discontinued security updates can leave devices less secure and that app developers may stop supporting older operating-system versions. How much e-waste is caused by short software support?
The available figures establish that electronic waste is a growing concern, but they do not isolate the share caused specifically by short software-support periods. The European Commission Joint Research Centre reported in 2022 that EU electronic waste was growing by an estimated 2% annually and that less than 40% was recycled. It would therefore be inaccurate to call software support the largest cause of e-waste or to suggest that extending updates alone would solve it. Hardware failures, repair prices, parts and service access, consumer needs, resale or reuse options, and recycling all influence what happens to a device.
How long should a phone get software updates?
There is no single duration established here as a universal current guarantee. The European Commission’s assessment cites 2021 market evidence in which phone and tablet operating-system support ranged from below one year to above five years. That is a historical range from the cited evidence, not a promise about present-day models or every market. Check the manufacturer’s stated end dates and whether its commitment covers both operating-system upgrades and security patches.

Duration is only one useful comparison. Also consider whether updates preserve performance and app compatibility, and whether the device can be repaired affordably if its battery or another part wears out.
Can an old phone still be safe to use?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the phone’s update status, the sensitivity of the activities performed on it, and the user’s tolerance for risk. A phone that no longer receives security updates is more exposed to vulnerabilities that later updates might have addressed. That does not prove every unsupported phone has been compromised, nor does it make every basic offline use equally risky.

- Keep supported apps and the operating system current; app compatibility can end separately from device updates.
- If the phone is unsupported, avoid using it for sensitive accounts or payments when a supported device is available, and consider replacing or repurposing it based on your needs.
Does ending updates make a phone obsolete?
No. It can reduce a phone’s security, compatibility, and usefulness, but “obsolete” is a judgment about whether it still meets a person’s needs. A device may remain adequate for limited tasks, offline use, or reuse by someone with different requirements. The concern is that support gaps can turn a functioning device into one that no longer meets its owner’s practical requirements, increasing the chance of premature replacement.
What else determines whether a device lasts?
Software is one durability dimension, not a substitute for repair and service. The International Telecommunication Union’s ITU-T L.1018 framework treats software and firmware support alongside repair information, equipment, spare parts, maintainability, manufacturer service, data security, and recycling and reuse. It recommends system-update support for a period so devices can adapt to technological change and user needs; it does not establish a specific duration that every manufacturer already provides. Repair also depends on more than the existence of a replacement part. Repair documentation, diagnostics, necessary equipment, and tools or software needed after certain part replacements can matter. A repair is most likely to extend a device’s life when parts and expertise are accessible and the cost compares favorably with replacement.

Repair can keep a device in use longer and defer replacement, although its value depends on the repair, the phone’s remaining support, and its condition. The JRC’s 2022 report modeled a scenario in which extending a smartphone’s life by two years through battery self-replacement could save consumers up to €338 over 4.5 years. That is a scenario-specific estimate, not a universal saving or a guarantee for a particular phone. JRC report

Before deciding, compare repair cost and likely remaining useful life with replacement, and check whether parts, instructions, and qualified service are available. A general toolkit does not establish that a particular phone can be repaired safely; device-specific guidance and appropriate tools matter.
What EU rules say—and who they cover
EU rules address some parts of the issue, but their scope should not be mistaken for a worldwide requirement. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 sets ecodesign requirements for specified mobile phones, smartphones, cordless phones, and slate tablets. Its provisions include availability and timing requirements for security and corrective updates, plus access to software or firmware tools in specified serialized-part replacement cases. How to choose and keep a phone for longer
- Compare support commitments. Look for stated security-update and operating-system support periods, and distinguish the two.
- Check repair access. Find out whether common repairs, such as battery replacement, have available parts, service information, tools, and reasonable costs.
- Consider continued compatibility. Think about the apps and services you need, not just whether the phone powers on.
- Use repair and reuse where practical. Repair a suitable device, pass it on if it still meets someone else’s needs, and recycle it responsibly when it cannot be kept in useful service.
