Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA software KVM lets one physical keyboard and mouse control several computers by relaying their input over a local network. In the common “screen edge” mode, moving the pointer through a configured edge transfers control to the neighboring computer; hotkeys or an on-screen control may provide alternate switching. Clipboard synchronization is a separate feature that can copy data between those computers. Neither capability automatically switches video output or combines displays.
The right choice depends on your operating systems, supported hardware, switching style, clipboard policy, network, and security requirements. Before enabling clipboard sharing, treat the connected computers as a single data-sharing zone and confirm that your organization permits it.

What a software KVM actually does
Traditional KVM means “keyboard, video, mouse”: a hardware box switches one set of peripherals, and usually a monitor signal, between computers. A software KVM normally handles only keyboard and mouse input. It runs a client or service on each participating computer and sends input events across the local network to whichever computer is active.
The computers can remain on their own screens. Your monitor may show both machines at once, or you may use separate displays. Moving the pointer to an arranged screen edge changes the target computer in products that support edge switching. Other implementations use a keyboard shortcut, a button, or an explicit target list. At any moment, one computer generally receives the keyboard and mouse events; a special multi-machine mode is an exception that must be enabled deliberately.

What it does not do
- It does not inherently switch HDMI, DisplayPort, or other video signals.
- It does not merge operating-system desktops into one operating-system session.
- It does not make applications, files, or drives available to the other computer unless a separate sharing feature provides that path.
- It does not guarantee identical keyboard layouts, shortcut behavior, pointer acceleration, or clipboard formats on every operating system.
How input moves from one computer to another
- Install and run the software on every computer. One instance usually acts as a server or host for the physical keyboard and mouse, while the others act as clients, although some products use peer-style terminology.
- Put the computers on a reachable network. A shared Wi-Fi or Ethernet network is typical. The software must be able to discover the peers or connect to their addresses, and local firewall rules must allow the required traffic.
- Arrange the computers logically. You define which computer is left, right, above, or below another. The arrangement is independent of the physical position of a monitor unless you choose to match them.
- Cross the switching boundary. In an edge workflow, push the pointer through the configured edge. The software stops sending mouse and keyboard events to the previous target and begins sending them to the next one.
- Use a hotkey or explicit command when needed. A shortcut is useful when a window spans screens, the pointer cannot reach an edge, or you want a deterministic switch during a presentation or game.
The network carries input events, not a video stream. Consequently, switching is normally responsive even when the computers have different display resolutions. Responsiveness still depends on local-network quality, host load, and whether security software delays or blocks the connection.
Clipboard sharing is a separate data path
When clipboard synchronization is enabled, a copy operation on one computer is transmitted to another computer’s clipboard. Pasting then uses the receiving system’s normal paste command. This is independent of pointer switching: you can move the mouse without sharing clipboard contents, and some products let you share the clipboard while using a hotkey rather than an edge.
Do not assume that “clipboard” means plain text only. Logitech Flow documentation says its implementation can transfer text, images, and files. Other software KVMs may support only text, impose size limits, or handle rich text, images, and files differently. Check the current documentation for the exact product, operating-system pair, maximum sizes, and whether transfer is automatic or requires a command.

Clipboard decisions to make before setup
- Which formats are allowed: text, rich text, images, files, or none?
- Is synchronization continuous, limited to an explicit paste, or disabled for particular applications?
- What happens when the source and destination use different character sets, file permissions, or path conventions?
- Can administrators disable clipboard transfer while leaving keyboard and mouse sharing enabled?
- Are copied passwords, tokens, customer records, or confidential documents allowed to cross the boundary?
Because a clipboard can contain credentials and files, enabling it is equivalent to granting a data path between the machines. Clear the clipboard after sensitive work when policy requires it, and avoid pairing a managed work computer with an untrusted personal computer.
How the main software approaches differ
| Approach | Documented behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Logitech Flow | Pointer movement switches computers; a Flow-supported keyboard can follow the mouse; copying and pasting can transfer text, images, and files. | Requires Logi Options+ on both computers, a Flow-supported mouse paired on separate channels, and a shared Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. Confirm that the exact mouse and keyboard models appear in the current supported-device list. |
| Synergy | Relays input directly between computers on a local network over an encrypted connection. Its documentation includes copy/paste security controls, and its FAQ says only one computer receives keyboard and mouse input at a time. | Compare the current operating-system matrix, licensing, discovery and configuration steps, and security settings. The vendor’s October 3, 2026 security overview is scoped to Synergy 1 version 1.21.4 and Synergy 3 version 3.7.2. |
| Microsoft PowerToys Mouse Without Borders | Microsoft documentation lists clipboard sharing and a mode that sends the same input to multiple machines. | It is oriented toward Windows. Verify the current Windows and PowerToys requirements and whether the multi-machine mode fits your use case. |
| Input Leap | Project documentation describes SSL/TLS support for the connection. | It is a community project. Check the current release, platform compatibility, configuration procedure, and the project’s warning that a malicious client may receive input or set clipboard contents. |
No option is universally best. Device-dependent software can be easiest when your peripherals are already supported; general-purpose tools can offer broader hardware choices but require more manual network and security configuration.

- Inventory the computers. Record each operating system and version, physical location, display arrangement, keyboard layout, and whether the machine is personal, managed, or restricted.
- Confirm support before installing. Check the vendor’s current operating-system table. For device-dependent systems, verify the exact mouse and keyboard model rather than assuming every device in a product family works.
- Choose the network. Put all computers on the same trusted Wi-Fi or Ethernet network when possible. Guest networks and client-isolation settings can prevent peer communication even when internet access works.
- Install the software everywhere. Use the same release family when the documentation recommends it. Restart the service or computer if the installer requests it.
- Assign roles and authenticate peers. Select the computer physically connected to the keyboard and mouse as the source or server. Enter the pairing code, key, or shared secret on each client. Do not accept an unexpected peer merely because it appears on the local network.
- Allow only the required firewall traffic. Create a rule limited to the trusted network profile and the application or documented ports. Avoid opening the service to public network profiles.
- Arrange screen edges. Drag each computer into the same left-right or top-bottom order you use physically. Test one edge at a time so a misplaced boundary is easy to diagnose.
- Set a deliberate switching shortcut. Keep a hotkey available even if you prefer edge switching. It is the recovery method when the pointer becomes trapped on the wrong computer.
- Enable clipboard sharing only after input works. First test pointer and keyboard control. Then enable clipboard transfer and test a harmless text string, an image if supported, and a small file only when the product documents file transfer.
- Test sleep, lock, and reconnect behavior. Lock each computer, put it to sleep if your workflow requires that, and confirm what happens when the network drops and returns. Record any setting that must be re-enabled after a reboot.
Switching behavior and practical limits
Edge switching
Edge switching feels closest to a single wide workspace. It works best when displays have stable positions and the pointer can reach the boundary. Full-screen applications, remote-desktop windows, virtual machines, and operating-system gestures can intercept the pointer, so keep a hotkey configured.
Hotkeys and explicit selection
Hotkeys are predictable on irregular desk layouts and when monitors do not line up. They can conflict with application shortcuts, accessibility features, or keyboard layouts. An explicit switch command is slower but easier to audit in a controlled environment.
One target versus many targets
Most products send events to one selected computer. Microsoft’s documentation for Mouse Without Borders lists a mode that sends the same input to multiple machines; treat that as a distinct operating mode, not a default property of software KVMs. Broadcasting keystrokes can expose information to every selected computer, so use it only when all targets are trusted and the action is intended for all of them.

Security, privacy, and organizational controls
Input sharing grants a connected peer access to keyboard and mouse events. Clipboard sharing additionally moves user data. Pair only computers you trust, protect pairing secrets, and verify the peer identity rather than treating local-network presence as proof of safety.
Synergy’s Business & Enterprise Hardening Guide states: “Clipboard sharing moves user data between machines and is the control most likely to matter at a data boundary.” Use that as a policy question: is the boundary between a personal and work machine, two security zones, or two users who are not equally authorized?

Input Leap’s documentation warns that a malicious client may receive input and potentially set clipboard contents. This is why authentication, server identity validation, encryption settings, least-privilege firewall rules, and trusted network profiles matter even on a home LAN.
- Disable clipboard synchronization when you do not need it.
- Do not copy passwords, private keys, regulated records, or authentication codes across an unauthorized boundary.
- Keep the software updated and remove abandoned clients from the pairing list.
- Document which computer is the trusted input source and who may add peers.
- For managed devices, follow your organization’s endpoint, data-loss-prevention, and remote-access policies.
Troubleshooting checklist
The pointer will not cross to another computer
- Confirm the client service is running on both machines.
- Check that the computers are on the same reachable network and not isolated by a guest-network setting.
- Recheck the logical screen arrangement and the exact edge being crossed.
- Inspect the firewall profile and application permission on both systems.
- Use the configured hotkey to determine whether edge detection, rather than connectivity, is the problem.
Keyboard input reaches the wrong computer
- Move the pointer back to the intended target or invoke explicit switching.
- Look for a multi-machine or broadcast mode and turn it off unless it is intentional.
- Check for a remote-desktop or virtual-machine window capturing the keyboard.
Clipboard copy or paste fails
- Verify that clipboard sharing is enabled on every participating computer, not just the source.
- Test plain text first; unsupported image, rich-text, or file formats can make a working feature appear broken.
- Check product-specific size limits and whether a security policy blocks clipboard transfer.
- Restart the software service after changing the setting, then test with non-sensitive content.
The connection works until reboot or sleep
- Confirm the service starts with the operating system.
- Recheck network profile changes after waking from sleep.
- Look for a new firewall prompt or an address that changed through DHCP.
- Update both endpoints to supported releases if the vendor documents a compatibility requirement.
When a hardware KVM is the better fit
Choose a hardware KVM when you need the KVM’s “V” — actual video switching — or when software installation and network communication are prohibited. A hardware unit can switch a monitor and USB peripherals without sending keyboard, mouse, or clipboard data over the LAN. Its suitability depends on the computer’s video connectors, resolution and refresh requirements, USB behavior, and the number of computers; verify those specifications for the exact model before buying.
If all you need is one keyboard and mouse across already-visible computers, software is usually less intrusive. If you need one monitor to display only the selected computer, or your security policy forbids peer input services, evaluate hardware instead.

- Start with operating systems. Eliminate tools that do not support every computer or that require an edition you cannot install.
- Check hardware dependence. If you want a device-integrated experience, verify the exact supported mouse and keyboard. Otherwise favor a tool that accepts your existing peripherals.
- Pick the switching model. Use screen edges for fluid movement, hotkeys for predictable control, or explicit selection for auditable switching.
- Define clipboard scope. Decide whether text is enough, whether images and files are necessary, and whether policy permits any transfer.
- Review network and security. Confirm discovery, authentication, encryption, firewall rules, and trusted-peer management.
- Decide whether video must switch. If yes, software input sharing alone is not a replacement for a video-capable hardware KVM.
A software KVM succeeds when it makes input switching convenient without creating an unexamined data channel. Test the smallest useful configuration first, add clipboard sharing only when justified, and keep an independent hotkey or physical control available for recovery.
