If you want to know “What song is this?”, Snapchat’s historical Shazam integration and its current Sounds tool answer different questions. Snap announced a camera-based way to recognize music in 2019, but current Snapchat support documentation reviewed here does not confirm that the feature remains available. Sounds, by contrast, lets you search for music to add to a Snap.
Music recognition and Sounds search do different jobs

What Snapchat announced about recognizing a song
In an April 4, 2019 announcement, Snap said users could press and hold the Snapchat camera screen to use Scan. The announcement described Shazam integration as a way to learn more about music playing nearby. That establishes what Snap announced at the time; it does not establish that the control remains in today’s app.

Snapchat’s current Scan support page describes detecting Snapcodes and QR codes, not identifying songs. The available documentation therefore does not settle whether music recognition appears in any current app version or region. If you want to try it, check your own Snapchat camera for a music-recognition option rather than assuming the old gesture still works.
Search for music to add to a Snap
- Open Snapchat’s camera and tap the Sounds icon.
- Browse tabs such as For You, Saved, Recents, Trending, or My Sounds, or search for an artist or sound.
- Tap a result to preview it. If desired, adjust where the song starts or save it for later.
- Tap Done to apply the sound to your Snap.
This finds audio in Snapchat’s library for use in a post; it is not the same as listening to ambient audio and identifying the song that is playing.

Create a recorded Sound
Snapchat also documents making a Sound by recording up to 60 seconds, giving it a name, and saving it. You can trim the recording and optionally make it public. Snap’s guidelines describe Sounds as a library for adding music to Snaps; they prohibit using Sounds to create an unauthorized music-listening service or premium music-video streaming service. Use Shazam if Snapchat cannot identify the music
Apple’s current Shazam guide explains how to identify music with Shazam on iPhone, iPad, and Android, including music playing in another app. Depending on your device, access can include the Shazam app, iOS Control Center, or Android Quick Settings. Follow Apple’s device-specific instructions for the controls available on your setup; required permissions and access can vary.

Shazam is an app-based alternative, not a Snapchat accessory or a setting that makes Sounds search recognize nearby music.
