Some models capture photos, take calls, and play audio without showing anything in the lenses; display glasses add optics that put digital information in the wearer’s view. Across both types, a phone commonly handles setup, apps, internet access, or photo transfers, though requirements vary by model.
What makes glasses “smart”?
The term covers several kinds of eyewear. Depending on the model, frames may contain a camera, microphones, open-ear speakers, wireless radios, storage, a battery, and touch or voice controls. These components let the glasses capture what the wearer sees, respond to voice or touch, play sound, and communicate with a phone or online service.

Camera-and-audio glasses do not necessarily have a visual display. Display glasses add a small image source and lens optics to show glanceable information. Google’s Android XR glasses demo, for example, describes a camera and microphones that let Gemini see and hear, along with speakers for AI responses, music, and calls. That is a description of Google’s demonstrated system, not a universal feature set or proof that processing always happens on the glasses.
How do smart glasses display images?
Display glasses use a compact image source and optical elements to direct light toward the eye while leaving the real scene visible. A waveguide is one possible approach: its optics guide and redirect display light through the lens. Lumus describes geometric waveguide technology for wearable glasses and head-mounted displays, but not every display model is established to use that architecture.

Android’s developer documentation describes an additive display: pure black appears transparent, while darker colors emit less light and therefore appear less opaque. The intended result is digital content layered into the wearer’s view rather than a screen that replaces the surrounding scene. The exact optics and display behavior differ by product.
A product example: Meta Ray-Ban Display
Ray-Ban describes Meta Ray-Ban Display as having a full-color 600×600-pixel display built into the right lens. Listed uses include walking directions, translated captions, messages, and music controls. Those capabilities and that resolution belong to this named product; they should not be assumed for camera-and-audio glasses or other display models.
How do the camera, microphones, and speakers work?
Camera and microphones
A frame-mounted camera can take photos or video from roughly the wearer’s point of view. Microphones pick up speech for calls and voice commands; some products also record audio with video. What a camera can capture, how it is activated, and where processing occurs depend on the model and its software.

Audio
Small speakers built into the frame can play calls, prompts, assistant responses, or music without covering the ears. Microphones provide the voice-input side of the interaction. Meta’s developer documentation describes audio playback through the glasses’ speaker, while Google’s demo describes speakers for AI, music, and calls. Sound leakage, audio quality, and available controls are product-specific; these examples do not establish category-wide performance.
Do smart glasses need a phone?
Often, a phone acts as the companion device and network bridge. It may handle pairing, account setup, app access, internet connectivity, and transferring photos or video from the glasses. The division of work varies: some tasks happen on the glasses, some on the phone, and some through online services.
Wireless connections can serve different purposes. Bluetooth may be used for pairing or audio, while Wi-Fi or a phone tether may carry network requests or larger transfers. Meta’s developer documentation explicitly describes live data over glasses Wi-Fi or a phone tether. Check the requirements for the exact model and intended features rather than assuming one connection method applies to all glasses.

Requirements for Meta Ray-Ban Display
For Meta Ray-Ban Display, Ray-Ban’s FAQ lists a supported Android or iOS phone, the Meta AI mobile app, a Meta account, and wireless internet access. The FAQ says some captures and voice controls work without Wi-Fi, but Meta AI, capture imports, and software updates require Wi-Fi. These are model-specific requirements, not a general rule for smart glasses.

What do the battery, storage, and controls do?
The frame’s battery powers its electronics, while built-in storage can keep photos or videos until they are imported. Controls vary by design: Android’s developer documentation identifies touchpads and voice as common ways to interact with audio and display glasses. Some products add other controls; Meta Ray-Ban Display, for example, supports an optional Neural Band alongside voice and display interactions.
Specifications should be read as product claims, not category averages. The Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) product page lists 32 GB of storage and an 8+ hour battery claim. Those figures apply to that named product and do not establish the storage or runtime of other smart glasses.

What to check before choosing smart glasses
Because “smart glasses” covers devices with different hardware and dependencies, compare the features you will actually use:
- Display: Is there a lens display, or are the glasses camera-and-audio-only? If there is a display, note its location and intended tasks.
- Camera and microphones: Check whether the model takes photos, records video, supports calls, or accepts voice commands.
- Phone and connectivity: Confirm supported phone operating systems, required app and account, and whether a feature needs Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a phone tether, or internet access.
- Battery and storage: Look for figures tied to the specific model, and distinguish a manufacturer’s claim from a category-wide expectation.
- Fit and availability: Check prescription options, frame fit, and regional availability for the precise model you are considering.
Manufacturers’ feature pages describe their own products and demonstrations. Specifications, compatibility, and availability can vary by model and market, so confirm current details with the manufacturer before purchase.
