Yes, you can use PlayStation Portal away from home if Portal has a suitable broadband Wi-Fi connection and your paired PS5 is connected to broadband and switched on or in Rest Mode. Does PlayStation Portal work away from home?
Yes. Portal does not have to be on the same Wi-Fi network as your PS5. You can connect it to broadband Wi-Fi at a hotel, a friend’s house, or another location and stream games from your paired PS5, provided the console is online and reachable. Can you use PlayStation Portal without Wi-Fi?
No—not for ordinary Remote Play from your PS5. PlayStation lists broadband internet Wi-Fi as a Portal requirement. Portal is a streaming device for your PS5, so it cannot continue Remote Play offline when there is no Wi-Fi internet connection.

PlayStation describes mobile data as an option for Remote Play on compatible devices generally. That does not establish that Portal itself can connect directly to a cellular network. A phone hotspot is different: it can provide Wi-Fi for Portal if the phone has mobile coverage and a suitable data plan.
What internet speed does Portal need?
PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for using Portal and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee: actual quality depends on the network environment at both ends of the Remote Play connection. Public Wi-Fi may be congested, restricted, or inconsistent, and PlayStation does not state a latency threshold or a data-use estimate in the cited FAQ.

How to prepare Portal for hotel or public Wi-Fi
- Finish initial setup at home. PlayStation says Portal must be set up before it can connect to public networks.
- Check the PS5 connection and Rest Mode settings. Pair Portal with the console, connect the PS5 to broadband, and leave it powered on or in Rest Mode so it can be reached.
- Update Portal software. PlayStation’s system software notes say version 3.0.0 added public network support and version 3.0.1 expanded it to a wider range, including certain 5 GHz public networks. These release details are dated; check the current software version and instructions in PlayStation Portal system software information.
- Join the network and complete any sign-in validation. Selected public networks that require an extra validation step can use a smartphone or tablet to finish the process. PlayStation’s announcement describes scanning a QR code with that device and completing validation in its browser; this may apply to networks such as those at hotels, cafes, or airports: PlayStation’s June 18, 2024 public Wi-Fi update announcement.
Public-network support does not mean every venue’s Wi-Fi will work. A network may block or complicate the connection, and its speed and stability may not be within your control.
Can you use Portal with a phone hotspot?
Potentially. If your phone can create a Wi-Fi hotspot, Portal can connect to that Wi-Fi; the phone’s mobile service supplies the internet connection. This is an indirect way to provide Wi-Fi, not a cellular connection built into Portal. You also need the PS5 to remain online at home. Mobile coverage, hotspot stability, and your data allowance all matter, and PlayStation does not specify how much data a session uses.

Does Portal require PlayStation Plus?
A PlayStation Plus membership is not required just to use Portal Remote Player or Remote Play, according to PlayStation’s Portal FAQ. A game may still require a membership for particular multiplayer features. Cloud streaming is a separate feature with separate Premium-subscription and availability conditions; it is not the same as streaming from your own PS5.
