How Simulated Moon Soil and Recyclable Plastics Could Build Space Infrastructure

NASA tests suggest regolith simulant and polymer binders could support future space construction, but the work remains subscale and terrestrial. Plastic recycling and lunar-style printing have not yet been joined into a proven closed loop.

Engineers have printed small shelter components from lunar-soil simulant mixed with polylactic acid (PLA), a thermoplastic binder, in tests that mimic aspects of the Moon’s vacuum and temperature extremes. The work points to a possible way to turn locally available lunar material into infrastructure, but it is still terrestrial, subscale technology development—not a shelter built on the Moon. Plastic recycling and regolith printing are also being tested in separate space-manufacturing efforts, not as one proven closed-loop system.

What is simulated lunar regolith?

Lunar regolith is the loose layer of dust and broken rock covering the Moon. Simulated lunar regolith—often called regolith simulant—is a terrestrial material selected or made to represent some properties of lunar soil for experiments. The studies described here printed with simulant, not soil collected from the Moon; simulant should not be assumed to be chemically identical to lunar material.

Using a simulant lets researchers test feedstocks and equipment on Earth. It does not by itself establish how a material or printer would behave with actual lunar regolith, under lunar gravity, or during long-term surface operations.

How does polymer-bound regolith printing work?

In NASA’s REACT-ACO project, engineers identified a printable feedstock made from lunar regolith simulant and PLA binder. The polymer binds the granular material so a printer can deposit it into a shape. NASA’s project record says the team characterized the composite and printed thin-walled, subscale shelter designs in a dirty thermal-vacuum chamber. The project reported technology maturity rising from TRL 3 to 4/5; that is the project’s own reported assessment, not a general certification of readiness for lunar deployment. A related concept, the Lunar Infrastructure Asset (LINA), uses fused granular fabrication with regolith-polymer composites. A NASA conference paper reports tests of samples in dirty thermal-vacuum conditions at approximately 10-3 torr and approximately -200 °C, as well as subscale printing on a regolith-simulant substrate in vacuum at approximately 10-4 torr. These are specific laboratory conditions reported by the paper, not a claim that the printer operated on the lunar surface. LINA is intended as an unpressurized protective shelter concept for astronauts and surface assets. NASA NTRS: Lunar Infrastructure Asset paper

Can you 3D print a shelter on the Moon?

Not on the evidence described here. Researchers have printed small-scale shelter designs in a terrestrial test chamber under simulated lunar conditions. The REACT shelter concept is intended to provide protection from radiation, meteoroid impact, thermal gradients, and ejecta from rocket plumes. Those are design goals; the cited work does not demonstrate a completed, operational lunar habitat or establish long-duration performance of a built structure.

How does this compare with other lunar construction ideas?

Polymer-bound simulant is one approach, not the only one NASA describes. Other development routes include melting and extruding regolith, transforming it with lasers, and producing regolith-based bricks or concrete-like materials. These differ in feedstock, equipment, energy demands, and how much binder or other material must be brought from Earth. The available project descriptions do not establish a winner or provide a common, directly comparable performance test.

The central appeal of all these approaches is using local material to reduce the amount of construction mass that must be launched from Earth. The practical trade-off is that each route needs equipment and power capable of processing abrasive material in a harsh environment. The polymer-composite demonstrations show a feedstock can be printed at subscale in simulated conditions; they do not show that a full construction system, its energy requirements, or its supply chain is ready. Can recycled plastic become 3D printer filament in space?

NASA’s International Space Station work describes two relevant but distinct demonstrations. The Refabricator recycles plastic waste into filament for 3D printing. Separately, Redwire Regolith Print tested printing with regolith simulant and thermoplastic feedstock in orbit. Taken together, these efforts show that plastic reuse and regolith-based printing are active space-manufacturing lines of work; they do not show that recycled Refabricator filament was used as the binder in the regolith-printing demonstration, or that either system is a lunar construction plant. Could lunar soil and plastic be used in a closed-loop system?

It is a plausible development path, but a verified lunar closed loop has not been demonstrated. A NASA report published in April 2026 describes a continuous-flow fermentation membrane bioreactor that used engineered microbes to produce lactic acid from simulated recycled wastewater. The lactic acid was then converted into PLA using commercial post-purification and processing methods. The authors present the configuration as a feasibility demonstration that could inform future fermentation processes; it is not a finished lunar-scale polymer plant. NASA also identifies PLA as a critical polymer binder for regolith-based 3D printing. NASA Kennedy Space Center report on producing PLA from simulated recycled wastewater

Linking such polymer production to regolith printing would require a dependable source of feedstock, processing equipment, power, and a way to recover and reuse materials. The cited work does not establish operational recycling yields, that the REACT PLA composite itself can be recycled, or that thermoplastics could be manufactured on the Moon at scale.

What has—and has not—been demonstrated

  • Demonstrated: subscale regolith-simulant and PLA feedstock printing, including thin-walled shelter concepts in a dirty thermal-vacuum chamber, according to NASA’s REACT-ACO record.
  • Reported for LINA: sample and subscale printing at the vacuum and temperature conditions specified in the NASA conference paper.
  • Demonstrated in separate work: recycling plastic waste into printer filament aboard the ISS, and an in-orbit regolith-simulant printing demonstration using thermoplastic feedstock.
  • Reported as a feasibility pathway: production of lactic acid from simulated recycled wastewater followed by PLA processing using commercial methods.
  • Not established by these sources: a crewed lunar habitat printed on the Moon, long-term durability in the lunar environment, measured protection from radiation by a completed structure, or a working lunar-scale recycling and construction loop.

A separate 2026 NASA-indexed study reports that a regolith-filled shape-memory vitrimer composite retained 57.92% of its mechanical properties after its second crack-healing cycle; it also reports a shape-fixity ratio of 90.02% and shape-recovery ratio of 83.46%. Those results apply to that specific vitrimer study, not to REACT’s PLA composite or thermoplastics generally. NASA NTRS: regolith-filled shape-memory vitrimer composite study
