There is no single sensitivity number for TNT detectors. A trace detector’s limit of detection applies to a particular compound, instrument, operating mode, sampling procedure and test method. In security screening, the usual process is to collect particles from a surface—often with a detector-compatible wipe—and analyze the sample; it is not a universal remote detector for any nearby object.
How TNT trace screening works
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes a trace-screening workflow in which an operator collects particles from a person or item on a sampling wipe, inserts the wipe into a benchtop or handheld detector, and the system thermally desorbs and chemically analyzes material from it. The result is then resolved as an alarm or non-alarm. NIST’s Trace Contraband Detection page, updated February 3, 2026, describes this workflow and its use in public-safety and security screening.

A positive chemical-trace identification is a screening signal, not a complete forensic finding or proof of intent. NIST says it may prompt additional screening or denial of entry. What action follows depends on the facility’s or agency’s procedures.

What “sensitive” means for a TNT detector
A limit of detection (LOD) describes performance under a defined test; it is not a universal TNT threshold. NIST notes that LOD differs by compound and detector model, while practical capability also depends on selectivity and response variability under realistic deployment conditions. A figure measured for one instrument or analyte cannot establish how another detector will perform on TNT.

NIST’s broader Trace Contraband Detection program page says reliable detection and identification of trace residues below 1 μg is important to public safety and security. That is context for trace contraband generally, not a TNT-specific LOD or a specification for any particular detector. A 2019 NIST publication says commercial trace detectors can measure signals from nanogram-sized analytes in complex matrices; it likewise does not establish a universal TNT limit. See NIST’s publication on ASTM E2677.
How to interpret a published sensitivity figure
Check the analyte and instrument
Look for the exact target compound, detector model and operating mode. A claim about another explosive, another detector, or a general class of trace instruments does not establish sensitivity to TNT on the instrument you care about.

- At-home infidelity test (2 min): Presumptive semen detection via initial detection of acid phosphatase (AP), a semen indicator – results in approximately 2 minutes.
- Easy to use sperm detection test: Moisten the stain, apply the test strip, wait, and compare the colour to the colour guide on the package. An ideal infidelity test for home use.
- Versatile semen presence test: The semen detection test detects the presence of semen on textiles, bedding, ceramics, and paper; also suitable for old or dried stains.
- Forensic-style method (home screening): Inspired by forensic analysis (presumptive AP method); like any at-home semen presence test, a positive result requires laboratory confirmation.
- Contents & discreet packaging: 10 test strips, a spray bottle (fill with water), and instructions for use – shipped in discreet packaging.
Check the LOD method and sample
ASTM International’s E2677-26a defines LOD90 for a compound deposited on a sampling swab. In this method, the stated mass is the lowest for which the test estimates, with 90% confidence, both at least a 90% true detection probability in a particular detector and at least a 90% true non-detection probability for a process blank. The figure therefore reflects both detection and blank performance under the method—not merely the smallest signal the instrument has ever produced.
When reviewing a result, establish the sampling medium, test conditions and replicate measurements, as well as whether the reported metric follows the relevant ASTM method. The ASTM catalog page was last updated October 1, 2026; NIST’s E2677 limits-of-detection software page describes the method’s calculator, but lists software version 2018/09 and a last update of September 12, 2018. Check the current standard edition rather than treating the older software page as the edition in force.

Consider selectivity and operating consistency
A low LOD alone does not show how well a detector distinguishes a target from other material or how consistently it responds in realistic use. NIST identifies sensitivity, selectivity and response variability as relevant to practical detection capability. A useful comparison needs evidence about these factors, not just a headline mass value.
Why the lowest LOD is not automatically the best detector
ASTM E2520-26 evaluates trace explosive chemical detectors with a broader performance framework. It accounts for analyte performance and identification value as well as effective throughput, including sampling rate, sampled area and estimated maintenance over a typical eight-hour shift. The practice says a detector reaches “minimum acceptable performance” at a score of at least 80 within that framework. That score is not a guarantee of performance in every facility or deployment.

E2520 covers detectors using technologies including ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and mass spectrometry (MS). The technology label alone does not establish TNT sensitivity: compare the specific instrument’s results under a relevant test procedure. ASTM also says its practice does not replace an agency’s application-specific performance procedure or address every safety concern.

What to ask before relying on a sensitivity claim
- Does the evidence name TNT, the exact detector and its operating mode?
- Was the material deposited on a sampling swab, and is the swab compatible with that instrument?
- Does the stated LOD follow ASTM E2677, including its detection and process-blank criteria?
- Does the evaluation address selectivity, response variability, identification and operational throughput—not only the lowest mass figure?
- Is the intended use covered by the responsible agency’s current procedure?
For professional testing, use the current applicable standard and a qualified laboratory or agency procedure. Do not infer a TNT threshold from general trace-residue figures, or treat a screening alarm as proof of a particular event or intent.
