Researchers made a sponge-like absorbent called soft calcite from waste blue mussel shells. The calcium carbonate material adsorbed dyes from water and absorbed crude oil from seawater in laboratory research, but it is not a household sponge or a proven product for cleaning up the ocean.
What is the inorganic sponge?
It is soft calcite (SC), a form of calcium carbonate made from waste blue mussel shells. “Sponge” describes its nest-like structure and absorbent behavior; the material is not an ordinary polymer sponge. The study, by Jennifer N. Murphy, Céline M. Schneider, Kelly Hawbould, and Francesca M. Kerton, was published in Matter on 2 December 2020 as “Hard to Soft: Biogenic Absorbent Sponge-like Material from Waste Mussel Shells.” Read the study.

How did researchers make soft calcite?
At a high level, the researchers heated waste mussel shells and treated them with acid at room temperature. The treatment disrupted the shell crystals; with gentle stirring, the material reassembled into agglomerates with a loose, nest-like morphology. The resulting calcium carbonate was calcite, but its structure differed from the more ordered calcite in the original shell. The researchers suggest that some of the shell’s remaining organic matrix may help hold the reassembled material together.
The published summary does not provide a complete reproducible procedure. The finding should not be treated as a home recipe: shell powder and vinegar alone are not established as a reliable way to produce the studied material.

What could it absorb?
The study reports that soft calcite adsorbed dyes from aqueous solution and absorbed crude oil from seawater. It also reports good recyclability. These are research findings, not evidence that the material has been deployed in environmental cleanup.
The sources reviewed do not establish a quantitative uptake capacity, oil-to-material ratio, number of reuse cycles, or a like-for-like comparison with commercial sorbents. Without those measurements, it is not possible to rank soft calcite against established cleanup materials or estimate how much pollution it could remove in practice.

Could it clean up oil spills at sea?
That remains a possible research direction, not a demonstrated large-scale application. Senior author Francesca M. Kerton said that the material’s ability to absorb oil was exciting, but that “the scalability and cost of making this sponge will limit that application.” The study does not establish production capacity, field performance, or a commercial cleanup product.
A 2020 report from Memorial University also described biomedical applications as an area the team was interested in exploring. That was future research interest, not evidence of a tested medical use.

Is the mussel-shell sponge available to buy?
The available sources do not identify soft calcite as a commercially available consumer product. The research supports interest in a shell-waste-derived absorbent, but not a purchasing recommendation or a claim that ordinary shell products have the same properties.
