Microsoft says files are encrypted in transit with TLS and at rest with AES-256. Your Microsoft account and the devices you use remain important access points, and Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that only you hold the keys needed to decrypt your files.
What protects files stored in OneDrive?
Microsoft describes several layers of service protection. It says data traveling between your device and OneDrive, and between its datacenters, is protected with TLS. It also says each file is encrypted at rest with a unique AES-256 key, and those unique keys are encrypted with master keys stored in Azure Key Vault. These are Microsoft’s stated service-side encryption measures; they are not evidence of end-to-end encryption or keys controlled exclusively by you. Microsoft also describes physical, network, and application protections for its datacenters, including restricted facility access, network isolation and firewalls, security-development practices, vulnerability response, monitoring, and patch deployment. These safeguards protect the service infrastructure; they do not remove the risks of a compromised account, device, or shared link.

The cited Microsoft documentation describes encryption in transit and at rest, but does not say that Microsoft is technically unable to access files or that customers alone control the decryption keys. Do not treat encryption at rest as a promise that Microsoft cannot access stored content. The documentation also does not establish what access may occur in every legal, operational, or support circumstance.

How safe are files if someone gets into my Microsoft account?
Your Microsoft account is a key access boundary. If another person can sign in as you, cloud encryption does not by itself stop that person from accessing files through an authenticated session. Microsoft advises using a strong password, keeping account security information current, and enabling two-factor verification. It says it monitors and blocks suspicious sign-in attempts and may notify you about unusual sign-ins. Microsoft’s OneDrive security guidance.
- Use a unique, strong password and enable two-step verification.
- Keep recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and other account security information current and secure.
- Review who can access shared files and folders, and remove links or permissions you no longer need.
- Keep your operating system and OneDrive app updated, lock devices when unattended, and protect any device used to open your files.
These account and device practices are general security advice, not a guarantee that a particular sign-in will be blocked. Microsoft specifically recommends encrypting mobile devices that use OneDrive. Microsoft’s guidance.

What does Personal Vault add?
Personal Vault is a protected area within OneDrive. Microsoft says opening it requires a strong authentication method or another identity-verification step, it locks automatically after inactivity, and direct sharing from the Vault is blocked. On the web, Microsoft says it locks after 20 minutes of inactivity; lock intervals and access methods differ by device. Availability and file limits can depend on subscription and market, so check the current terms for your account. Microsoft’s Personal Vault guidance.

Personal Vault has privacy caveats. Microsoft says that on Windows 10, while the Vault is locked, file names and hashes are not protected. Opening a Vault file in a Windows application can also cause its name to appear in that app’s Recent list and elsewhere in Windows. The Vault adds an access check; it does not erase traces left by the device or turn OneDrive into a user-exclusive encryption system.

Can OneDrive recover files after ransomware or accidental changes?
Restore an earlier file version
Microsoft says OneDrive version history supports all file types and retains versions for 30 days. For work or school accounts, an administrator may disable versioning. If version history is available, it can help restore an earlier state of a file after unwanted edits or corruption. Microsoft’s instructions for restoring a previous version.
Recover after a ransomware attack
Microsoft says Microsoft 365 subscribers can receive notifications about ransomware or other malicious attacks and can restore OneDrive to a point before the attack, up to 30 days afterward. Eligibility and product terms can change, and recovery is not a promise that every incident or every file can be reversed. Microsoft also documents recovery options for other data-loss events. Check the current terms and account-specific recovery options if you need to rely on them. Microsoft’s OneDrive recovery and protection overview.

Is OneDrive safe for sensitive documents?
OneDrive can be a reasonable place to store documents when you use its security controls carefully, but the right choice depends on your threat model and account setup. Consider how sensitive the files are, whether your organization’s administrator controls the account, who can access shared links, and whether you are comfortable with Microsoft’s documented service-side encryption model. Keep especially sensitive files off devices or accounts you cannot adequately secure, and do not assume that a cloud copy eliminates the need to protect local devices and account recovery routes.
