The Radxa NX5 is a compact compute module built around Rockchip’s RK3588S, with an eight-core CPU, a vendor-rated NPU of up to 6 TOPS, and a 70 × 45 mm footprint. It is not a standalone computer: you need a compatible carrier board to access its ports. Radxa’s NX5 IO Board is the documented option for evaluation and prototyping, and it is sold separately.

What the Radxa NX5 is

The NX5 is a system-on-module (SoM) intended for integration into a larger product. Its 260-pin SO-DIMM edge connector carries the module’s signals; a compatible application board, also called a carrier board, exposes the connections needed for peripherals, power, displays, cameras, and networking. Radxa describes edge computing, machine vision, smart terminals, and multimedia processing as target areas—not as independently verified performance results.

At the center is Rockchip’s RK3588S. Radxa specifies four Arm Cortex-A76 CPU cores running at 2.2–2.4 GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz, alongside a Mali-G610 MP4 GPU and an NPU rated at up to 6 TOPS. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmarks. The figures alone do not establish the speed, accuracy, or power consumption of a particular AI workload.

NX5 specifications and configuration caveats

Component Radxa’s stated specification What to check
Size and connector 70 × 45 mm module; 260-pin SO-DIMM edge connector. Confirm that your carrier board supports the NX5 pinout and mechanical layout.
CPU and GPU Four Cortex-A76 cores at 2.2–2.4 GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz, and Mali-G610 MP4 GPU. Confirm software and driver support for the APIs and workloads your product needs.
NPU Up to 6 TOPS; Radxa lists INT4, INT8, INT16, FP16, BF16, and TF32, and names TensorFlow, Caffe, TFLite, PyTorch, ONNX NN, and Android NN. Check compatibility with the specific model, framework version, and conversion/runtime pipeline. Radxa’s support list does not guarantee that a given model will run without adaptation.
Memory and storage LPDDR4X configurations up to 16 GB; official documentation describes optional onboard eMMC up to 512 GB. Option lists differ across Radxa’s product page, documentation, and product brief. Verify the exact memory and eMMC configuration for the SKU being offered.
Video and display Radxa lists decoding up to 8K at 60 fps and encoding up to 8K at 30 fps for stated codecs; listed output ceilings include HDMI up to 8K at 60 Hz, eDP up to 4K at 60 Hz, and DisplayPort up to 8K at 30 Hz. These are capability ceilings, not proof that every output can operate at its maximum simultaneously. Check the carrier design and source material for the intended combination.
Camera and expansion Two 2-lane or one 4-lane MIPI CSI camera interface; two single-lane PCIe 2.0 interfaces; two SATA ports; USB and UART, SPI, CAN, I2C, and PWM. Radxa notes resources shared among PCIe, USB 3, and SATA. The carrier determines which connections are exposed and which can be used together.
Networking and power Gigabit Ethernet PHY on the module; 5 V DC input specified. The IO Board lists Gigabit Ethernet with PoE support. That does not establish that the module accepts PoE without a suitable carrier implementation.
Operating systems Radxa documentation lists Debian, Yocto, Buildroot, and Android 14; the product page also references Radxa OS and Debian, Android, and third-party images. Check image maturity, maintenance, and peripheral support for the intended deployment.
Thermal limits Radxa recommends an environmental range of 0–50 °C and states that the module throttles above an 80 °C temperature limit. Cooling needs depend on workload, enclosure, and airflow; Radxa recommends external cooling for continuous high-performance operation.

Specifications and capability descriptions are from Radxa’s NX5 product page and NX5 documentation. Confirm current details with Radxa before choosing a configuration, particularly where SKU or API details differ across materials.

#1 Best Overall

What you need to use an NX5

For evaluation, Radxa’s application board provides a practical route from module to usable system. The NX5 IO Board is designed for the module and exposes interfaces including HDMI, DisplayPort, four USB 3.0 host ports, micro USB OTG, microSD, M.2 E Key for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modules, Gigabit Ethernet with PoE support, two MIPI CSI connectors, a fan header, and a 40-pin GPIO header. A custom carrier may be more appropriate for a product with specific size, power, or port requirements.

Radxa’s quick-start guide defines the development kit as the NX5 module plus the IO Board and explicitly says the board must be purchased separately. For the guide’s setup, prepare a 5 V DC 5525 supply rated at 3 A or higher, boot media (the guide references onboard eMMC), a micro USB data cable for flashing, and an HDMI cable and display. Add a keyboard and mouse if you plan to use a graphical interface. These are guide-specific setup items; not every deployment needs all of them.

  1. Choose the module SKU. Confirm the RAM and eMMC configuration rather than relying on a general maximum specification.
  2. Select a carrier. Use the IO Board for evaluation or a compatible custom carrier. Check the exact interfaces exposed and the resource-sharing constraints for PCIe, USB 3, and SATA.
  3. Plan the software path. Select an operating-system image and validate that it supports the required peripherals, accelerator runtime, and model conversion process.
  4. Set up power and boot. Follow Radxa’s quick-start instructions for the selected board and image; use a suitable supply and the required flashing or boot media.
  5. Design for sustained load. Assess cooling in the final enclosure under the intended continuous workload. Radxa lists the Heatsink 7010 as an NX5-specific accessory, but it is not established as a universal requirement.

Is the NX5 a fit for edge AI?

The combination of CPU, GPU, NPU, camera connectivity, and compact module format makes the NX5 a candidate for embedded vision and local inference designs. Radxa’s documentation gives video analytics, object detection, and face recognition as examples. Those examples describe intended applications; the available specifications do not establish application-level throughput, latency, accuracy, or power draw.

Before committing to a design, validate the full workload on the software stack and carrier you plan to ship. In particular, confirm that the model can be converted to a supported runtime, that required camera and display interfaces are available together, and that the system can maintain its target performance with the final thermal solution. A headline TOPS figure cannot answer those system-level questions.

How to evaluate it for a product

  • Exact SKU: Compare memory and storage on the offered module, not only the product family’s maximum configurations.
  • AI pipeline: Verify precision and framework compatibility, then measure the target model on the actual runtime. Radxa’s NPU rating is a vendor specification, not an independent workload result.
  • Carrier and interfaces: Map every required port to the carrier design, accounting for shared resources and simultaneous-use needs.
  • Software support: Check image maturity, driver coverage, update practices, and peripheral compatibility for the intended operating system.
  • Thermals: Validate sustained operation in the final enclosure and ambient conditions rather than assuming a development-board result will carry over.
  • Supply planning: Radxa’s 2023 product brief states availability is guaranteed until at least September 2033. This is a manufacturer lifecycle statement, not confirmation of local inventory or a guarantee beyond the brief’s terms; consult the current brief and regional supplier before making procurement commitments.
