How SectopRAT Abuses Legitimate Audio Software Files to Steal PC Data

FortiGuard traced a SectopRAT loader through modified files associated with an unnamed audio workstation, but investigators did not determine how the files reached the victim.

SectopRAT can hide in modified files associated with legitimate Windows audio software, then steal sensitive information and give an attacker remote control of an infected PC. In the incident analyzed by FortiGuard Labs, investigators found the malicious files in a folder under C:ProgramData. They did not establish how the folder reached the victim, and FortiGuard found no evidence that the software vendor distributed the tampered files.

What happened in the audio-software incident?

In a technical analysis published September 24, 2026, FortiGuard Labs researcher Xiaopeng Zhang described a SectopRAT variant—also known as ArechClient2—concealed among components associated with a legitimate digital audio workstation from an unnamed Italian company. The workstation and its developer were not identified in the reporting.

The suspicious files were in a folder under C:ProgramData, outside the software’s normal installation directory. FortiGuard found no evidence that the legitimate vendor distributed a compromised version. Investigators also could not determine how the altered folder reached the victim, so the incident does not establish a vendor supply-chain compromise or a particular download route.

How did the modified files load SectopRAT?

FortiGuard documented this execution chain on the investigated computer:

  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  1. A scheduled task launched ReportDump.exe from the suspicious folder.
  2. A modified FrameworkBase.dll imported the malicious sdkcra.dll.
  3. Staged code decrypted and loaded the SectopRAT payload, which was embedded in data that included pool.db.

This describes how the analyzed files executed after they were present on the machine; it does not explain how they arrived there.

What can SectopRAT do?

FortiGuard counted 29 control commands in the analyzed variant. Its reported capabilities include:

  • Capturing the screen and enabling remote-display control.
  • Running shell commands and managing processes and files.
  • Rebooting the computer and exfiltrating data.
  • Retrieving an additional module through a command FortiGuard identifies as DeployBrowserKey.

That additional module can collect browser credentials, the URLs associated with them, autofill data, saved payment-card details, and cookies. FortiGuard also lists email clients, gaming applications, cryptocurrency browser extensions, and desktop wallets among the targets. These are capabilities and targets observed in the sample; they do not prove that every listed data type or application was affected in this incident.

What is known—and not known—about the compromise?

  • Known: The analyzed malicious folder was found under C:ProgramData, and its scheduled task and modified DLLs were part of the loader chain FortiGuard examined.
  • Not established: How the folder reached the victim, whether a particular installer or download was involved, or how many people were affected. The reporting gives no victim count for this audio-software incident.
  • Not supported: A claim that the workstation vendor distributed malware. FortiGuard said it found no evidence of that, and the vendor and product were not named.

What should Windows users check?

FortiGuard recommends getting software from official sources, avoiding cracked installers, and investigating scheduled tasks that launch programs from unusual locations such as C:ProgramData. Those are general precautions, not evidence that a cracked installer or any specific download caused this case.

If you are investigating a PC, treat an unfamiliar scheduled task that launches an executable from an unexpected path as a reason to look more closely—not proof by itself that the computer is infected. FortiGuard’s analysis also names a command-and-control address and port, but such indicators can become outdated; verify them against current threat intelligence before using them for incident response.

Do not confuse this with a separate SectopRAT campaign

Huntress reported a separate July 2026 campaign involving a fake Claude Desktop download and malvertising. That reporting concerns a different campaign and does not establish how the modified audio-software folder in the FortiGuard case was delivered.
