A 2024 laboratory study found that a silicon anode material modified with carbon made from red seaweed retained substantial reversible capacity over repeated cycling. The researchers did not add liquid seaweed extract to a battery: they carbonized Gelidium amansii biomass and used the resulting nitrogen-doped porous biochar to coat silicon nanoparticles. The results are promising materials research, not evidence of a consumer-ready seaweed battery.
How does seaweed improve lithium batteries?
In the study most closely matching this topic, seaweed served as a source of carbon for modifying silicon used in a lithium-ion battery anode. The researchers describe the carbon as porous and interconnected. After annealing, nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated silicon nanoparticles. The study investigates this composite as an anode material; it does not show that liquid seaweed extract is poured into an off-the-shelf battery.

Silicon is the battery material being modified in this experiment, while the seaweed-derived biochar forms the surrounding carbon structure. This is a particular materials design, not evidence that seaweed improves every lithium battery or that all seaweed-derived materials work by the same mechanism. The study was published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces in 2024.

These are capacities reported per gram of the tested material, not the energy capacity of a complete battery pack or a prediction of a phone, car, or other device’s runtime. They are the paper’s laboratory results, not an independently verified commercial-cell specification.
What kind of seaweed is used in lithium batteries?
The 2024 silicon-anode paper used red seaweed identified as Gelidium amansii to make its nitrogen-doped porous biochar. Other studies have investigated different seaweed-derived materials for different battery components, so “seaweed battery” does not describe one shared ingredient or design.

| 2024 ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces | Lithium-ion | Gelidium amansii-derived nitrogen-doped porous biochar used to modify silicon nanoparticles in the anode | Reversible-capacity figures for the tested composite are given above. Source |
| 2025 Communications Materials | Lithium-sulfur | Carrageenan, a polysaccharide from red algae, investigated as a binder | The paper addresses cycle stability and capacity loss challenges in lithium-sulfur batteries; it is a different chemistry and material role. Source |
| 2019 Advanced Energy Materials journal feature | Lithium-ion | Seaweed-extracted biomaterial described for use as a separator membrane and as a binder alongside manganese-based cathode materials | The feature describes 84% stable cycling under its stated conditions: 3.5–5.0 V, above 55 °C, and a 1 C/1 C charge-discharge rate. This figure belongs to that feature’s described cells, not the 2024 silicon-anode experiment. Source |
The capacity values from the 2024 work should not be compared directly with the separate 2019 cycling figure: the studies concern different materials, battery components, test descriptions, and reported metrics.

The 2024 study reports capacity retention across cycling for a specific experimental silicon–biochar anode material. It does not establish that a seaweed extract makes commercially available batteries last longer in everyday use. The 2019 feature and 2025 lithium-sulfur paper also examine distinct seaweed-derived materials and battery roles; their findings cannot be combined into a single general claim about battery lifespan.

Are seaweed batteries available to buy?
The cited studies establish experimental battery-material research, not a consumer product or commercial availability. In particular, the 2024 result concerns a tested composite anode material rather than a complete, market-ready battery. The sources cited here do not identify a product using that composite that consumers can purchase.

What the research does—and does not—show
- It shows: researchers have investigated seaweed-derived materials for specific roles in lithium-ion and lithium-sulfur battery research.
- It does not show: that liquid seaweed extract is added to standard batteries, that all seaweed materials improve batteries in the same way, or that the 2024 composite is a commercially available product.
