In a laboratory experiment, the orientation of brine shrimp—often sold as “sea monkeys”—was associated with a change in how energy moved between scales in a shallow, two-dimensional flow. The finding suggests that geometry can steer energy transfer locally in this setup; it does not show that small obstacles can reverse turbulence in every natural flow.
What the experiment showed
Lei Fang and Xinyu Si studied brine shrimp in a shallow layer of electrically driven salt water. In their reported observations, energy moved from smaller to larger scales when a solo shrimp’s body was oriented at less than 45 degrees to the direction of maximum stretching. Above 45 degrees relative to that same direction, energy moved from the larger-scale flow toward smaller perturbations. The angle is specific to the experiment’s definition of maximum stretching, not a universal threshold.

The researchers later used centimeter-long rods, which were easier to measure than swimming shrimp. Quanta Magazine’s account says changing the rods’ orientation also allowed control over transfer toward higher or lower scales, and that numerical simulations reproduced the effect. Quanta dates the shrimp result to 2024 and the rod follow-up to 2025; details here about those studies are attributed to its reporting. Read Quanta Magazine’s account.
How shrimp and rods affected the flow
A shallow, electrically driven channel
Si spread a thin film of salt water over glass and placed magnets beneath it. Electric current through the conductive fluid interacted with the magnets, driving flow in opposite directions on either side of a channel and creating a central velocity gradient. The researchers introduced brine shrimp into that region and analyzed how their moving bodies disturbed the flow.

To study individual animals, Si repeatedly filmed shrimp and waited for one to cross the test area at a useful angle. The later rod array made orientation easier to measure.
Why orientation could matter
The proposed explanation involves the alignment of two tensors: one associated with large-scale shear and energy flux, and another associated with the flux shaped by small-scale swimmer motion. Changing the swimmer’s orientation changes how these tensors align, which can change the energy flux. Lei Fang, an engineer at the University of Pittsburgh, summed up the idea: “The geometry matters.”

How this fits with established cascade ideas
In the familiar picture of three-dimensional turbulence, energy passes from large eddies to smaller ones, where viscosity eventually dissipates it as heat. In idealized two-dimensional turbulence, energy can instead cascade upscale, from small eddies toward larger coherent structures. Work by Robert Kraichnan and George Batchelor helped establish this two-dimensional cascade framework.
The shrimp and rod experiments do not overturn those frameworks. Their contribution is evidence that, in a particular two-dimensional flow, intervention geometry can influence the local direction of energy transfer. Gregory Falkovich, a physicist at the Weizmann Institute of Science, described the work as “a beautiful and skillful experimental work.”

A separate study examined local cascade control in a rotating tank
In a distinct study published March 2, 2026, Francesca De Serio’s paper in Physical Review Fluids examined turbulent flows in a 13-meter-diameter rotating tank. Its abstract describes a steady horizontal turbulent momentum jet injected at mid-depth and measurements made with high-resolution planar particle-image velocimetry. The study reports that stress-strain alignment and local Rossby number governed the local direction and persistence of energy transfer. Increasing rotation expanded coherent inverse-cascade patches and increased their persistence as they moved with the flow. See the paper’s American Physical Society abstract.
The two studies explore local control of energy pathways under different conditions. The shrimp and rod work used orientation in a shallow, weakly turbulent two-dimensional system; De Serio’s study used rotation and a jet in a large tank. They are related evidence, not interchangeable demonstrations.

What the findings do—and do not—establish
Friction in the shallow fluid layer made turbulence difficult to initiate, and the resulting system was weakly turbulent and two-dimensional. Strongly turbulent flows found in nature, especially three-dimensional ones, differ substantially. The shrimp experiment therefore does not establish that orienting a small obstacle can redirect energy in a tornado, ocean current, or other natural flow. Si and Fang are investigating extensions, including tabletop tornadoes; broader applicability remains a question to test.
