India had already secured the three-match ODI series 2–0 before the scheduled third match on 3 October 2026. The final game in New Chandigarh offered Shubman Gill’s side a chance to complete a clean sweep, while West Indies could avoid a whitewash. Gill was the central storyline after his unbeaten 223 powered India’s eight-wicket win in the second ODI.
India vs West Indies 3rd ODI: match time and series position
The third and final ODI was scheduled for Saturday, 3 October 2026, in New Chandigarh, with a listed start time of 2:00 p.m. IST (08:30 UTC). India led the series 2–0 after winning the first two matches. The schedule establishes the planned start, not whether play had begun: the available match coverage does not confirm the toss, final XIs or a live score.

Why Shubman Gill is the story
Gill made 223 not out from 133 balls in the second ODI, his second ODI double hundred, as India chased West Indies’ 405/7. India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs to win by eight wickets, and India Today named Gill player of the match. Rohit Sharma also scored a century, according to the match report.

The innings made the third ODI a chance for Gill to cap a series in which India had already won. Hindustan Times’ preview also cast the match as a symbolic return to Punjab: it said Gill had trained and shared insights with state cricketers at the PCA Stadium in Mohali before the series, and framed his captaincy in New Chandigarh as a milestone for a player who came through Punjab cricket. That is the preview’s interpretation, set against the experience and stature of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
West Indies have reasons to believe
West Indies’ 405/7 in the second ODI was built on centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. Their top order had shown it could produce a major total, so the visitors had a clear route to making the final match competitive: carry that batting form forward and avoid another successful India chase.
Hindustan Times identified Jayden Seales as the most testing West Indies bowler for India in the series. Its pre-match assessment was that Seales could become more effective if the other end supplied greater pressure; that is a tactical read, not a confirmed account of how the third match unfolded.

India’s expected bowling options
Hindustan Times’ preview said Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna were out of the equation for the match. It expected India to look to Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, with Mohammed Siraj expected to return and lead the pace attack. These were pre-match expectations, not confirmation of the final XI or bowling combination.
The preview also identified Naman Dhir as a possible selection opportunity. He had not batted in the first two ODIs. Dhir described a role at No. 6 or 7, with the option to contribute as a fifth or sixth bowler when needed:
“The communication was very simple. I will be batting at No. 6 or 7, where I have played in the IPL. The main role will be to contribute as the fifth or sixth bowler whenever the team needs me. If I can utilise that role well, it will be very good for the team.”

He also spoke about the prospect of playing in Punjab:
“There can’t be a better feeling than playing on your home ground. I have played a lot of cricket here and have grown up here. I never thought that after playing for Sher-e-Punjab, I would get the opportunity to play for the Indian team here. I have a very good feeling and a feeling of gratitude.”
Those comments explain the potential personal significance of an opportunity; they do not establish that Dhir was selected or played.

What conditions were expected
Hindustan Times anticipated another batting-friendly surface, pointing to the previous ODI’s combined total of more than 800 runs. It also expected less humidity than in the first two matches. Both points were forecasts ahead of the third ODI, not verified match-day conditions.
Gill’s leadership in Punjab
The Hindustan Times preview presented Gill’s return to Punjab as both a sporting and emotional storyline. Gurkeerat Mann, Punjab Cricket Association Cricket Director and a former India and IPL cricketer who mentored Gill, praised the batter’s development and willingness to take responsibility:

Mann also described Gill as a student of the game and predicted further strong performances. That is Mann’s opinion, not a measured assessment:
“After every series and tour he has things to tell and learn. I would say he is the best student of the game. Many more such top-notch performances are expected from him.”
