Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteScribeToAny’s team says its performance turnaround came from tackling two different bottlenecks: slow first responses at the edge and unnecessary work in the browser. Its case study describes caching eligible anonymous HTML, keeping deployment versions separate in the cache, reducing client-side code, and deferring noncritical work. The results are the team’s own reported measurements, not an independent benchmark.
Why did a Worker with low CPU time still respond slowly?
ScribeToAny describes an audio and video transcription service built with React 19 and deployed on Cloudflare Workers. The team says GPU-heavy Whisper transcription, diarization, and translation run asynchronously on Modal, while the web application’s server-side rendering, authentication, and database queries run on Workers.

In the team’s 2026 case study, Cloudflare Observatory real-user monitoring showed a 75th-percentile time to first byte (TTFB) of 3,128 ms, with more than 57% of hits rated “poor.” The team also reports that direct curl requests to cold edge nodes took 3.4–3.6 seconds on the homepage and SEO tool pages. Yet its Worker metrics showed a median CPU wall time of 5 ms. These figures are ScribeToAny’s report, not independently verified measurements. Ray Mac’s case study on DEV Community was posted September 8, 2026, and edited September 22.
The team’s explanation is that CPU time and end-to-end response time measure different parts of the request. CPU wall time reflects the Worker’s execution, while the reported delay was attributed to cold-isolate startup and loading and compiling a large Worker bundle. The case study puts that bundle at approximately 11 MB and baseline traffic at around 0.1 requests per second; it describes more than 80 audio, video, conversion, and transcription tool routes, and elsewhere identifies 84 tool route names in configuration. Those details make cold starts a plausible explanation in this account, but the write-up does not establish a controlled causal comparison.

How did the team cache public pages without caching private ones?
Restrict caching to eligible anonymous HTML
The team used Workers’ caches.default for public pages that render identically for anonymous visitors. Its reported policy bypassed both cache reads and writes when a better-auth.session_token cookie was present. It allowlisted public routes such as the homepage, pricing, about, changelog, tools, blog, and legal pages, while excluding dashboard, API, and settings routes.
It also stored only responses that were HTTP 200, contained HTML, and had no Set-Cookie header. These restrictions matter: a shared cache must not serve personalized content to another visitor, and caching a response that sets a session cookie can interfere with authentication behavior.

Use a build-aware key to avoid stale releases
To make a deployment stop matching cached HTML from the previous build, the team says it injected a compile-time build identifier into the cache key as an internal __ev query parameter. In its implementation, that parameter was used for cache matching and storage, not exposed to the client or sent to the upstream origin. A new build therefore generated different keys; old entries became unreachable through the new versioned key and could expire on their existing TTL.
The case study reports s-maxage=86400 (24 hours) and stale-while-revalidate=604800 (7 days). The team says an edge cache hit returned in under 45 ms. That is its reported result for this implementation, not a latency guarantee for other Workers deployments or uncached requests.

What changed in the browser’s initial workload?
Keep route-specific data out of the shared entry path
The team says the root layout imported a site configuration containing metadata, navigation, pricing matrices, and all 84 tool route names. It split tool metadata and pricing calculations into separate modules so visitors would not have to load every tool definition. It also configured Vite vendor chunks for icons, React, TanStack Query, and Zod, and removed a global TooltipProvider from public routes so it was used only in the dashboard and editor. Markdown typography CSS moved out of the global stylesheet and loaded only on pages that needed it.
Render visible content first and defer the rest
The hero, trust strip, and Whisper section remained synchronously imported. Lower page sections were wrapped in React.lazy() and Suspense, with minimum-height fallbacks intended to reserve space and prevent layout shift. The team reports that the initial hydration JavaScript payload fell by more than 40% after its changes.

- Used Book in Good Condition
It also moved Google One Tap out of initial hydration. According to the case study, the sign-in flow was scheduled with requestIdleCallback, an eight-second fallback, and triggers on browser idle or initial user interaction. The authors say this reduced interference with the main thread during initial paint; the write-up does not provide an independent measurement of that specific effect.

The final set of changes addressed both visible rendering and audit checks. The team reports preloading critical CSS and removing an entrance delay from the main heading. It corrected an aria-orientation value, added descriptive aria-label attributes, improved primary-button contrast to meet WCAG AA, and replaced vague link text with descriptions of their destinations. These are concrete fixes, but a high audit score alone does not establish that every user or assistive-technology setup will experience the site identically.
What results did ScribeToAny report?
The following before-and-after figures come from the ScribeToAny team’s 2026 case study. Lighthouse figures are audit results; the mobile values are explicitly described as simulated mobile conditions. The TTFB result below concerns a cache hit, rather than every request.
| Measure | Before | After | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge TTFB | Approximately 3,128 ms at P75, with 57% or more of hits rated poor | Under 50 ms at P75 for an edge cache hit | Team-reported; anonymous cache eligibility applies. The team says the approximately 3,500 ms cold-Worker path was bypassed for anonymous visitors. |
| Desktop Lighthouse Performance | Approximately 68 | 95 | Team-reported PageSpeed Insights result for scribetoany.com. |
| Mobile Lighthouse Performance | Approximately 42 | 78 | Team-reported PageSpeed Insights result under simulated mobile conditions. |
| CLS | 0.03 | 0.00 | Team-reported change in cumulative layout shift. |
| Accessibility | 92 | 100 | Team-reported audit result. |
| SEO | 90 | 100 | Team-reported audit result. |
The team also reports desktop PageSpeed Insights scores of 100 for Accessibility, 96 for Best Practices, and 100 for SEO, along with 3/3 on Agentic Browsing audits. Its reported mobile scores were 100 for Accessibility and 100 for SEO. The team attributes these results to its changes, but the case study is a before-and-after account, not a controlled comparison of caching strategies, runtimes, or rendering approaches. PageSpeed and Lighthouse scores can vary with test conditions and should not be read as a promise of the same real-user performance elsewhere. The publisher’s case-study page is listed at ScribeToAny.
Quick Recap
What can other teams take from this case study?
- Measure end-to-end TTFB as well as handler CPU time; one reports the user-visible wait, while the other helps describe execution cost.
- Cache only responses that are safe to share. Define public-route eligibility and session-cookie behavior before adding an edge cache.
- Use a deployment version in cache keys when a release must stop matching old HTML without waiting for old entries to expire.
- Keep noncritical route data and browser work off the initial path where the product allows it; reserve space for deferred content when layout stability matters.
- Treat this as one team’s implementation and reported outcome, not proof that the same set of changes will produce the same scores or response times on another site.
