Scientists study ageing in tortoises by tracking identifiable animals over time, measuring several aspects of health and reproduction, testing molecular age markers, and comparing genomes. These methods answer different questions: long-term records can show whether survival or reproduction changes with age, while biomarkers and genome studies can suggest—but not by themselves prove—how ageing works.
Do tortoises age?
Ageing is not a single trait, and a long life does not mean an animal is immune to ageing. Survival, reproductive performance, body condition, and molecular measures can follow different patterns as animals get older. A species might show a slow change in one measure and a different pattern in another.

A 2022 study of turtles and tortoises living in zoos and aquariums compared 52 species. About 75% showed slow or negligible senescence, and about 80% had ageing rates lower than those found in modern humans. Those results apply to the species and demographic data analyzed, not to every tortoise species or every aspect of ageing. Read the comparative study.

Follow identifiable animals over many years
The clearest way to study age-related change is to repeatedly observe marked or otherwise recognizable individuals. Researchers can record survival, reproductive success, and other traits at different ages, then ask whether the same animals change over time. This helps distinguish within-individual ageing from stable differences between individuals—for example, when some animals are consistently more robust than others.
#1 Best Overall
Long-lived animals make this approach demanding: useful records may take decades, and relatively few individuals may reach the oldest ages. In wild populations, researchers may not find or recapture every animal at every survey. Capture–mark–recapture methods can account for imperfect re-sighting, while statistical models can help separate age patterns within individuals from differences among them. Missing observations, changing sample sizes, environmental variation, and selective disappearance can still complicate interpretation. Nussey and colleagues review methods for measuring senescence in wild populations.
Measure several outcomes, not just lifespan
Survival alone does not reveal every dimension of ageing. Researchers may also track reproduction, body condition, physiological or immune measures, and molecular traits. Comparing multiple outcomes can strengthen an interpretation: for example, a change in survival alongside a change in reproductive performance offers a broader picture than either measure alone. The traits need not decline at the same rate or at the same age.

Test candidate biological age markers
DNA methylation patterns and telomere length are among the molecular measures studied as possible age markers in animals. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found both approaches represented across vertebrate groups and reported stronger age-prediction performance for methylation than for telomere length in its synthesis. Its analyses included at least 60 age-estimation models and more than 40 species in common across the methylation and telomere analyses. These are findings across the included studies, not a guarantee that either method accurately estimates a tortoise’s age.

Telomere length can respond to environmental and social stressors; methylation can also reflect stress and may show recovery after accelerated ageing effects. A marker should therefore be validated for the species, population, tissue, and conditions in which it will be used. Where possible, researchers test it on animals of known chronological age and report uncertainty rather than treating a biomarker as an exact clock. See the 2023 review and meta-analysis.

How do scientists study possible causes of long life?
Comparative genomics lets researchers examine DNA from long-lived animals and identify genes or variants that may relate to processes such as DNA repair, telomere maintenance, or resistance to cancer. A genome study of the Galápagos tortoise Lonesome George and an Aldabra giant tortoise reported candidate changes associated with longevity and age-related disease, including a DCLRE1B variant that may affect interactions with telomere-related biology.
These comparisons generate hypotheses, not proof that a particular variant causes exceptional lifespan. Establishing a mechanism requires follow-up functional experiments to determine whether a genetic difference changes a biological process—and whether that process affects lifespan or health. What can tortoises teach us about ageing?
Tortoise and turtle research can help scientists identify patterns worth investigating, but results need careful boundaries. A review of nontraditional ageing models discusses a finding of no age-related telomere shortening in white blood cells of captive loggerhead turtles. That is evidence from a turtle, a particular tissue, and captive animals; it does not establish that telomeres behave the same way in every tortoise species or tissue. Read the review of nontraditional ageing models.

The broader lesson is methodological: long-term individual records reveal demographic change, molecular assays test potential age predictors, and genome comparisons point toward mechanisms to investigate. Combining these lines of evidence gives a more reliable picture than treating lifespan, a single biomarker, or a genetic difference as a complete explanation of ageing.
