Scientists cannot directly measure a single, agreed maximum human lifespan. They estimate what may constrain lifespan by studying survival and death rates at extreme ages, tracking the oldest reported ages at death, and testing statistical or biological models. The results depend on which question is being asked and on the data and assumptions used; there is no consensus ceiling.
The first distinction matters: life expectancy, the chance of reaching a particular age, mortality at extreme ages, and the maximum age at death are different outcomes. A study about one cannot automatically establish another.

What does “the human lifespan limit” mean?
The phrase can refer to several questions. Is there a maximum age that no human can exceed? Do death rates keep rising among people who survive to exceptionally old ages, or do they level off? How likely is a person in a given population to reach age 100? These questions use different data and produce results that are not interchangeable.
- Life expectancy is a population measure calculated from a specified mortality schedule. It describes an average under those conditions, not the oldest age someone could reach.
- Survival to an age is the probability that members of a defined population reach a threshold such as 100. It does not identify the maximum age possible.
- Age-specific mortality is the rate or probability of death at particular ages. Its pattern at extreme ages is the subject of the mortality-plateau debate.
- Maximum age at death refers to the oldest observed age at death in a population or period. A record is an observation, not proof of an absolute biological boundary.
Consequently, a finding that gains in life expectancy are slowing does not by itself show that a hard upper age exists. Nor does a model that projects a limiting lifespan establish that a person has reached that limit.

How demographic estimates are made
Demographic analyses use records of survival or death organized by age, and often compare populations or periods. The basic task is to determine how mortality changes as people age, particularly in the sparsely populated far end of the age distribution. Depending on the study, researchers may ask whether the rate of improvement in survival changes, whether mortality continues to increase at very old ages, or whether the oldest ages at death have shifted over time.
Age-specific survival and mortality
To study mortality, researchers compare the number of deaths with the population at risk at different ages. They can then describe how death rates change as age rises. A late-life mortality plateau would mean that mortality stops increasing, or becomes roughly level, at the oldest ages under study. It would not mean that death stops occurring, or that people at those ages are guaranteed a particular additional number of years.
The distinction between a flat mortality rate and a maximum age is important. A plateau concerns the shape of mortality across ages in a population. A maximum-age claim concerns the upper end of observed or modeled ages at death. Even if one pattern were established, it would not settle the other question on its own.

Models of age-related mortality
One model used in this literature is the Gompertz model, a framework for describing age-related increases in mortality. A model estimates a pattern from observed data; it does not observe an upper lifespan boundary directly. The result depends on the age range, population, and model specification being analyzed. In the French analysis published by Dang and colleagues in 2023, the estimated Gompertz slope remained statistically different from zero across the model specifications they examined. The authors interpreted that result as evidence that death rates continued to increase beyond age 105 in that population.
Tracking the oldest ages at death
Another approach examines whether the age of the oldest reported person at death has changed over time. Dong, Milholland, and Vijg analyzed global demographic data in their 2016 Nature paper. They reported that improvements in survival declined after age 100 and that the oldest age at death had not increased since the 1990s. They interpreted this as support for a natural limit to human lifespan. That is the authors’ conclusion from their analysis, not a settled consensus or a direct observation of a universal maximum.
Biological-marker models
Some work takes a biological rather than a purely demographic approach. A 2021 longitudinal study of blood markers describes a progressive loss of resilience and cites a 138-year estimate for a limiting lifespan. That figure is a model-based estimate discussed in the paper. It is not an observed human age, a verified record, or an agreed ceiling. The estimate should be read in light of the model and the specific biological markers it concerns, rather than as a prediction of how long any individual will live.

Why the mortality plateau remains disputed
The debate turns on what the data show at ages reached by very few people, and on how those observations are analyzed. Barbi and colleagues’ 2018 Science paper on “longevity pioneers” reported what its authors described as the best evidence to date for a plateau in mortality at extreme ages. Dang and colleagues’ 2023 analysis reached a different result for French data: their Gompertz slope estimate remained positive in the model specifications they tested, which they said supported continued increases in mortality beyond age 105.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThese papers address a statistical pattern, not a simple contest over one definitive lifespan number. Their conclusions differ, and the 2023 result is specifically about the analyzed French population and specifications; it should not be generalized to every country or every model. The 2018 finding likewise should be attributed to its authors rather than treated as proof that all researchers accept a plateau.
Extreme-age estimates are difficult because the relevant tail of the population is small. When observations are sparse, a small number of records can have substantial influence on an estimated pattern. Researchers also need to consider the quality of age information, the population selected, the observation period, and the model used. A precise-looking estimate does not eliminate uncertainty arising from these choices.

When comparing studies, check what endpoint each one actually estimates, which population and years it covers, how it handles ages and records, and what model assumptions it makes. Those details determine whether two apparently conflicting papers are answering precisely the same question. The available study summaries do not provide a consistent account of age-validation procedures or uncertainty intervals across all the papers discussed here, so those details should be checked in each paper’s methods before drawing finer comparisons.

| Study | Outcome and data described | Reported result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dong, Milholland, and Vijg, Nature (2016) paper | Global demographic data; survival improvements after age 100 and the age of the oldest person at death over time. | The authors reported declining improvements in survival after 100 and no increase in the oldest age at death since the 1990s; they argued for a natural limit. | It is not a consensus value for a universal maximum age. |
| Barbi and colleagues, Science (2018) PubMed record | Demography of “longevity pioneers”; mortality at extreme ages. | The authors reported evidence for a late-life mortality plateau. | It does not settle the plateau question across populations and analyses. |
| Dang and colleagues, Demographic Research (2023) paper | French data; Gompertz mortality pattern beyond age 105 under the paper’s specifications. | The authors reported a slope statistically different from zero across model specifications, supporting continued increases in death rates. | It is not proof that the same pattern holds in every population. |
| Olshansky and colleagues, Nature Aging (2024) paper | Vital-statistics data for 1990–2019 from Australia, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, as well as Hong Kong and the United States; life-expectancy trends and survival to 100. | The authors reported decelerating life-expectancy improvements. They estimated that, unless biological aging is markedly slowed, survival to 100 is unlikely to exceed 15% for females and 5% for males. | Those projections do not set a maximum possible age at death. |
| Longitudinal blood-marker study, Nature Communications (2021) paper | Longitudinal analysis of blood markers and resilience. | The paper describes progressive loss of resilience and cites a 138-year limiting lifespan estimate. | The cited figure is not an observed maximum or scientific consensus. |
The 2024 estimates require particular care in interpretation. They concern life-expectancy trends and the proportion projected to reach age 100 in the studied populations and period, under the stated condition that biological aging is not markedly slowed. They are not an estimate that people cannot live beyond 100, nor a calculation of the oldest possible age.
How to evaluate a claimed lifespan ceiling
When you see a headline giving a single number for “the human lifespan limit,” use these checks before interpreting it:
Best Value
- Identify the endpoint. Is the paper estimating average life expectancy, survival to a threshold, the mortality rate at very old ages, the oldest observed age, or a modeled limiting lifespan? Do not substitute one for another.
- Locate the population and period. A result for French data, a set of high-income populations, or global demographic data has a defined scope. The result is not automatically universal.
- Check whether the number is observed or modeled. A reported age at death, a projection, and a model-derived limit carry different meanings. An estimate such as 138 years must not be presented as a verified record.
- Look at assumptions and sensitivity. For an extreme-age mortality claim, examine the age range and model form. Ask whether the conclusion changes across specifications, as in the contrasting plateau analyses.
- Keep uncertainty in view. Very few people reach the ages at issue. Data quality and small counts can affect the estimated tail, so a fitted curve is not a guarantee of a precise biological boundary.
These checks help distinguish a result that is genuinely about maximum lifespan from one that addresses a related but narrower question. They also explain why studies can appear to conflict without making identical estimates or testing identical outcomes.
What current evidence supports
The published work summarized here supports a cautious answer rather than a single number. Some researchers have argued from demographic trends that human maximum lifespan is constrained; another influential analysis found evidence for a mortality plateau; a later French analysis reported continued increases in mortality beyond age 105. A biological-marker paper has cited a 138-year model-based limit, while a separate 2024 study projected low probabilities of reaching 100 in its studied populations absent marked slowing of biological aging. These findings address distinct outcomes and do not combine into one agreed ceiling.
Population-level models cannot calculate an individual reader’s lifespan. They describe patterns across defined groups under particular data and assumptions. For any claim about a “limit,” the useful question is not only what number is reported, but what was measured, in whom, over what period, and by which model.
