The claim that it does not store videos refers to persistent server-side video files—not proof that no data is processed or that the implementation has been independently audited.
How SaveNowX finds a video
SaveNowX is a browser extension that adds a download button to supported X videos. The Chrome Web Store listing describes it as free and says no account is required; it also says the extension handles website content and is independent from X. See the Chrome Web Store listing.

According to developer DEV LAHCEN, a user starts with a public X post URL. SaveNowX first tries X’s public syndication endpoint and uses yt-dlp as a fallback. The developer says the resolve endpoint returns post metadata and video CDN URLs without downloading video bytes. Successful resolutions are reportedly cached by post ID for one hour; genuine “no video” or “not found” results are cached for five minutes. These are stated configuration durations, not performance measurements. The developer’s implementation account.
Finding a video URL and delivering the video itself are separate steps. What happens after resolution depends on whether a direct MP4 URL is available.

What happens when X provides a direct MP4
For a direct MP4, the developer says SaveNowX routes the download through a Cloudflare Worker that adds a Content-Disposition: attachment header. The video bytes then travel from X’s CDN to the user’s device, rather than passing through SaveNowX’s backend. DEV LAHCEN describes the common case this way: “The result: for the common case, the video goes directly from X’s CDN to the user’s device.” That statement describes the direct-MP4 route, not every download.
What happens when a post is HLS-only
Some posts, according to the developer, provide an HLS playlist (a .m3u8 file) and small .ts video segments instead of a progressive MP4. In that case, SaveNowX’s backend fetches the segments and remuxes them with yt-dlp and FFmpeg, then streams the resulting file to the user. The developer says a temporary file is deleted after it is sent.

This fallback means the backend is involved in handling video bytes. The developer’s “without storing” description therefore concerns not retaining persistent server-side video files; it should not be read as saying the server never handles video data.

What “without storing” does—and does not—establish
The developer says the service does not persist downloaded video files, but the available public materials do not independently demonstrate production behavior, logging or retention settings, or the temporary-file deletion lifecycle. A claim about video-file storage also does not establish that no URL, metadata, network request, or other data is processed.

X’s own video-download controls
X offers a built-in “Download video” option for certain posts to Premium subscribers. X says videos uploaded from July 25, 2023 onward can be downloaded by Premium subscribers unless the uploader disables downloads while composing the post; videos posted before that date are not downloadable through that feature. X also says accounts belonging to users under 18 have the download setting switched off. These are rules for X’s own feature and do not establish whether a third-party downloader can access a particular post.
