What does Samsung make at its Vietnam semiconductor facility?
The facility described in Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ announcements produces FCBGA package substrates. FCBGA, or flip-chip ball grid array, is a substrate used to house and electrically connect semiconductor chips such as CPUs and GPUs. It is part of the packaging and component stage—not the process that fabricates silicon dies.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced in December 2021 that it planned to invest $850 million in Vietnam production facilities and infrastructure, with completion targeted for 2023. That figure was an announced investment, not a verified final expenditure or measure of the factory’s current value. A later company announcement described Vietnam as one of its high-end FCBGA mass-production bases. Neither announcement gives current site-specific capacity, output, or utilization.

The relevant stages are chip design and wafer fabrication, package-substrate production and semiconductor packaging, then integration into finished products. FCBGA substrates support and interconnect chips in finished packages. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ Vietnam operation therefore supplies a packaging-related component; it should not be described as making the silicon chips themselves.

- Design and wafer fabrication: semiconductor designs are made into silicon dies at wafer fabrication sites. Samsung Semiconductor’s manufacturing-sites directory lists fabrication locations in Korea and the United States.
- Package substrate: Samsung Electro-Mechanics produces FCBGA substrates, including at its Vietnam base, for use in high-performance semiconductor packages.
- Finished electronics: manufacturers integrate packaged chips and other components into products such as computers, network equipment, and consumer electronics.
Samsung Electronics’ Vietnam manufacturing operations are a distinct part of this picture. Samsung’s overview describes sites making devices, components, laptops, network equipment, and consumer electronics. These operations should not be conflated with Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ FCBGA production. The available sources do not map material flows from the FCBGA factory to Samsung Electronics’ Vietnam sites.
Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics have different roles

These names refer to different Samsung businesses and different production stages. The World Bank provides broader context on Samsung Vietnam’s smartphone production and export logistics, but does not trace a supply route from the FCBGA factory to Samsung Electronics’ Vietnam operations.

What markets are FCBGA products intended to serve?
Samsung Electro-Mechanics links high-end FCBGA demand to servers, AI, automotive, and network applications. The company said it aimed to increase the share of high-value FCBGA for these markets to over 50% by 2026; this is a stated target, not a reported result. Its later announcement also described an HPC server FCBGA supply agreement with AMD and mass production, but did not say that the Vietnam factory supplied AMD. The customer agreement cannot be attributed to that site based on the available information.
