How Samsung’s Solid-State Battery Differs From Lithium-Ion—and What the 600-Mile Claim Really Means

Samsung SDI is developing an anode-less all-solid-state battery targeting about 900 Wh/L and 2027 mass production. Here is what that means—and why 600 miles and nine-minute charging remain unproven as a single product claim.

Short answer: Samsung SDI is developing an all-solid-state lithium battery targeting approximately 900 Wh/L and mass production in 2027. That could support longer-range, lighter electric vehicles and potentially improve safety. But Samsung has not published a certified 600-mile vehicle range, a production-car specification, or evidence that its frequently cited nine-minute charging figure applies to the same solid-state cell.

The claims at a glance

Claim What Samsung has publicly established What remains unproven
600-mile range Not stated as a certified vehicle specification in Samsung’s primary materials An EPA-rated production EV, pack capacity, vehicle model, or customer launch delivering 600 miles
900 Wh/L Samsung’s approximate target for its all-solid-state battery (ASB) That a complete vehicle pack will have the same density or deliver a particular range
Nine-minute charging An 8%-to-80% fast-charging technology Samsung described separately That it is a specification of the 900 Wh/L ASB or adds 600 miles in nine minutes
20-year life A longevity claim discussed among Samsung’s next-generation technologies That it applies to the same ASB under defined automotive test conditions
Availability Pilot-line work, prototype samples and a mass-production target for 2027 A consumer vehicle, price, geography, warranty or guaranteed launch date

Samsung SDI—not Samsung Electronics’ consumer-device division—is the battery manufacturer behind the program. Its public descriptions cover a development and commercialization plan, not a battery currently available to buy.

What a conventional lithium-ion EV battery contains

“Lithium-ion” describes a family of rechargeable batteries in which lithium ions shuttle between two electrodes through an electrolyte. A typical EV cell has a cathode, an anode, liquid organic electrolyte, a separator, current collectors and a casing. During charging and discharging, ions move through the electrolyte while electrons travel through the external circuit.

Solid-state does not mean lithium-free. Samsung’s cell remains a lithium battery; the central change is replacing the liquid electrolyte and changing the internal architecture.

What Samsung changes in its solid-state design

Solid electrolyte

Samsung replaces the liquid organic electrolyte with a solid electrolyte. The company says the solid material can also perform the separator’s ion-blocking function, allowing a more compact cell design and reducing reliance on a separate separator component.

Anode-less construction

Samsung describes an anode-less configuration. The cell is manufactured without a conventional active anode layer and forms lithium during operation. This can leave more of the cell’s volume for active materials, although the practical result depends on manufacturing, interfaces and durability.

High volumetric density

Samsung reports approximately 900 Wh/L for the ASB—about 40% higher in volumetric density than its own mass-produced prismatic batteries. That is a cell-level, company-reported comparison, not a claim that every lithium-ion battery or a complete EV pack is 40% less dense. See Samsung’s technical explanation at news.samsungsdi.com/global/articleView?seq=203.

Solid-state versus conventional lithium-ion

Feature Conventional lithium-ion Samsung ASB
Electrolyte Liquid organic electrolyte Solid electrolyte
Separator Normally a separate component Samsung says the solid electrolyte can replace its function in the design
Anode Conventional anode layer Anode-less configuration described by Samsung
Energy density Varies by chemistry, cell and manufacturer Approximately 900 Wh/L stated for the ASB
Safety Needs thermal, electrical and mechanical protection Potentially lower fire risk because it does not depend on flammable liquid electrolyte; not fireproof
Commercial status Widely mass-produced Development and prototype stage, with Samsung targeting 2027 mass production
Vehicle range Depends on the pack and vehicle 600 miles is not established as a certified specification

What 900 Wh/L could mean for an EV

Wh/L means watt-hours stored per litre of cell volume. Wh/kg measures energy per kilogram. Neither number alone is a driving-range rating.

A denser cell could let an automaker choose among several outcomes:

SolidSafe BMX 10K Semi-Solid MagSafe Magnetic Power Bank, 10000mAh (Blue)
  • SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Semi-solid-state cells hold a fraction of the flammable liquid in ordinary lithium-ion and resist thermal failure. In internal testing, the cells were puncture, cut and drill tested with no fire. The aluminum housing is highly thermally conductive, helping draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it during charging. Under 100Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
  • ALL-DAY POWER, STILL POCKETABLE: A full 10,000mAh gives a typical iPhone roughly 1.5 to 2 charges - plenty for long travel days, events and back-to-back workdays without chasing an outlet. The dense semi-solid state design (a paired 5,000mAh + 5,000mAh layout) keeps the pack slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or bag. The built-in lanyard doubles as a USB-C cable, so a charging cord is always attached - nothing extra to pack or lose.
  • QI2-CERTIFIED 15W MAGNETIC CHARGING: A strong, precisely aligned magnet snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise alignment and a strong hold, so you can keep using your phone while it charges. As a Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible charger, the magnetic connection keeps the charger aligned while you scroll, text, or move.
  • DUAL USB-C, UP TO 30W OUTPUT: Two USB-C ports let you charge several devices at once and deliver up to 30W of fast wired power for phones, earbuds and tablets. The same port also refills the 10K itself quickly, so it's ready for the next day. (Large tablets and laptops draw more and may only charge partially.)
  • FULL-COLOR LCD DISPLAY: A crisp color screen shows exact battery percentage plus live input and output wattage, so you always know how much power is left and how fast each device is charging - no blinking LEDs to decode. It stays easy to read at a glance, whether you're commuting, at an event, on a shoot or working late.
  • A smaller pack storing the same energy, freeing space and potentially reducing weight.
  • A larger-energy pack in the same physical envelope for more range.
  • More room for passengers or cargo through improved packaging.
  • Lower mass, which can improve efficiency, acceleration or payload capability.

Cell density becomes pack density only after adding cooling hardware, casing, busbars, wiring, sensors, battery-management electronics, structural protection and crash systems. Vehicle range also depends on usable pack capacity, motor efficiency, aerodynamics, tires, speed, weather and the testing standard—such as EPA, WLTP or CLTC. Without those inputs, 900 Wh/L cannot be converted honestly into 600 miles.

Is Samsung’s 600-mile battery real?

The underlying technology program is real: Samsung SDI reports an ASB, an anode-less design, approximately 900 Wh/L, prototype samples supplied to customers and pilot-line activity. Its stated objective is mass production in 2027; later company material specifies the second half of 2027 as the target. That is a target, not a guaranteed launch. Samsung’s business information is available at samsungsdi.com/business/index.html, and its later update is at samsungsdi.com/sdi-now/sdi-news/4782.html?pageIndex=1.

The 600-mile number is best treated as a media-reported or inferred potential outcome. Samsung’s primary materials reviewed for this topic do not identify a production EV, battery-pack capacity, EPA rating, customer vehicle or consumer purchase date associated with that figure. A 600-mile CLTC estimate, if one eventually appears, would not be directly comparable with a 600-mile EPA result.

What the nine-minute charging claim actually says

Samsung’s March 2024 announcement described charging from 8% to 80% in nine minutes. The company attributed that technology to optimizing the lithium-ion transfer path and reducing resistance. It discussed this fast-charging work separately from the ASB mass-production roadmap. The announcement is at news.samsungsdi.com/global/press/view?seq=48.

That wording is not the same as a full charge in nine minutes or adding 600 miles in nine minutes. Actual energy added depends on the vehicle’s efficiency and usable capacity. Charging speed also requires sufficient charger power, a high-voltage pack, thermal management, an appropriate state-of-charge window, a favorable charging curve and suitable grid infrastructure. Peak power may last only briefly; the session average can be much lower.

Safety: potentially safer, not risk-free

Removing flammable liquid organic solvent can reduce leakage concerns and may lower fire risk under some abuse conditions. Samsung describes its ASB as having very low fire risk compared with liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries. That is a company claim, not a guarantee that a vehicle pack is fireproof.

  • SEMI-SOLID-STATE SAFETY, BUILT FOR TRAVEL: Unlike conventional lithium-ion banks with a flammable liquid electrolyte, SolidSafe Air's semi-solid-state cells sharply cut the liquid component — lowering risk at the cell level and staying stable under heat, stress and impact. It's not a circuit-only fix but a fundamental change in chemistry. At 18.5Wh, it's airline carry-on ready.
  • 15W QI2 MAGNETIC + 20W USB-C: Qi2-certified, MagSafe-compatible magnetic charging snaps onto iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 with precise, secure alignment, while the USB-C port delivers up to 20W when you're in a hurry. The 5,000mAh cell gives a modern iPhone roughly one full top-up, and you can charge wired and wireless at the same time.
  • TITANIUM SHELL, BUILT TO LAST: A titanium-reinforced shell resists dents and drops, and titanium's high thermal conductivity helps draw heat away from the cells and dissipate it at the surface during charging. It's premium protection that keeps the Air tough and travel-ready in a remarkably slim form.
  • CCC CERTIFIED FOR TRAVEL: CCC certified for battery compliance and travel in China, with FCC, CE and UKCA listings for other regions. Built-in circuit safeguards cover overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent and short circuits. Magnetic charging suits MagSafe iPhones or a thin compatible case; for Pixel and other Android phones, use a magnetic case or the 20W USB-C port.

Internal shorts, manufacturing defects, mechanical damage and thermal events remain possible. Real-world safety depends on the complete module and pack, cooling system, battery-management software, crash protection, charging controls and quality assurance. Prototype or laboratory results cannot by themselves establish fleet performance.

What about the 20-year battery-life claim?

Samsung has also promoted a battery capable of more than 20 years of service among its next-generation technologies. Public material does not establish that this figure belongs to the same 900 Wh/L ASB associated with the 600-mile headlines. A meaningful longevity claim would need its cycle count, temperature, charge and discharge rates, end-of-life capacity threshold and whether testing applies to cells, modules, packs or vehicle use.

Barriers between a prototype and an EV

Automotive-scale commercialization still has difficult engineering and business questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Manufacturing yield and the cost of specialized materials and equipment.
  • Electrical resistance at interfaces between solid materials.
  • Maintaining mechanical contact and any required pressure through the cell’s life.
  • Dendrite or short-circuit behavior.
  • Cold-weather output and charging performance.
  • Cycle life under repeated fast charging.
  • Scaling from pilot cells to consistent, high-volume production.
  • Pack sealing, crash performance, serviceability and recycling.
  • Warranty reserves, supply contracts and eventual replacement cost.

These are unresolved commercialization questions, not proof of a defect in Samsung’s program.

When could drivers use it?

Samsung’s public timeline points to a planned mass-production start in 2027, with later material saying the second half of that year. It does not name a retail vehicle, launch country, production volume, price or warranty. Initial output could go to selected automakers before any broad consumer availability.

Anyone buying an EV now must evaluate currently available lithium-ion vehicles, their certified range, charging curve and local infrastructure. Samsung’s ASB is a future B2B technology, not a Samsung-branded EV or replacement battery offered to ordinary buyers.

How to evaluate the next solid-state battery headline

  1. Check whether the density is measured at cell or pack level.
  2. Look for a certified vehicle range and identify the EPA, WLTP or CLTC standard.
  3. Confirm usable battery capacity and the vehicle used for the claim.
  4. Read the exact charging interval, such as 8%-to-80%, rather than “full charge.”
  5. Ask for charger power, average charging power and temperature conditions.
  6. Check cycle-life conditions, retained capacity and warranty terms.
  7. Distinguish a prototype, pilot line, qualification run and mass production.
  8. Look for independent testing and cell-, module- and pack-level safety data.

The Bottom Line

Samsung’s all-solid-state program is a credible development effort targeting roughly 900 Wh/L and mass production in 2027. It may enable denser, lighter and potentially safer EV packs, but the viral “600-mile, nine-minute battery” wording combines figures that Samsung has not publicly tied to one production cell or vehicle.
