How Rolling Tape Can Make Graphene: A 2023 High-Throughput Exfoliation Method

Two tape-covered cylinders can repeatedly peel flakes from graphite and other layered crystals, spreading them across adhesive tape for transfer to a substrate. A 2023 study demonstrated this automated mechanical-exfoliation method and batches of devices, but it did not establish industrial graphene production.

How does rolling tape exfoliate graphene?

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms; graphite consists of many such layers stacked together. Mechanical exfoliation separates thin flakes from a layered crystal. In the 2023 setup, two cylinders touch and rotate, each wrapped in adhesive tape with its sticky side facing outward. Layered crystal material placed on the tape is repeatedly pulled apart as the cylinders roll against one another.

The authors used Nitto SPV 224 tape and natural graphite flakes among their experimental materials. These are details of their setup, not a guarantee that a different tape or graphite source will behave the same way. The method was also applied to other van der Waals materials, a broader family of crystals whose layers are held together relatively weakly.

Why use two cylinders with different perimeters?

The cylinders’ perimeters were set at a 53:23 ratio. The authors report that the same pair of surface points meet again only after 1,219 revolutions. This reduces repeated contact at the same tape locations, helping distribute exfoliated flakes rather than concentrating them in recurring patches.

How are the flakes transferred to a surface?

Once flakes are spread over the tape, it is pressed against an acceptor substrate. The authors report annealing the tape and substrate at 110 °C to transfer most of the material. In their experiments, one transfer step produced sample coverage of about 75%; successive transfers can increase coverage and help flakes form a connected network, or percolation path.

These are reported results for the study’s materials and experimental conditions, not universal transfer specifications. A practical process would need to be checked for the chosen crystal, adhesive, substrate and desired device.

What did the study demonstrate?

The research team at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) reports nanosheet-bearing tape covering more than 10 cm² in its setup. The team also demonstrated batches of field-effect transistors and flexible photodetectors, using graphene and other van der Waals materials. The paper describes use with different substrates and material combinations, though compatibility still depends on the specific materials and transfer conditions.

Those demonstrations show that repeated exfoliation and transfer can produce material for multiple devices. They do not show that every flake has the same thickness, that all transferred areas have uniform electrical properties, or that a commercial production line has achieved a particular output.

How does this compare with other ways to make graphene?

The authors frame the method as an attempt to retain the quality associated with mechanical exfoliation while making the process more repeatable and productive. Their comparison with other routes is a broad manufacturing tradeoff, not a universal ranking of materials or products.

Route Potential advantage in the paper’s framing Tradeoff or qualification
Mechanical exfoliation, including the rolling-tape method Can produce high-quality flakes; this study automates repeated exfoliation and reports large-area tape coverage. Thickness and uniformity still need improvement; the reported area is a research result, not verified industrial output.
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) Can offer scalability and thickness control. The authors characterize it as more costly and complex.
Liquid-phase exfoliation Can scale at low cost. The authors note that it commonly yields smaller flakes, with less thickness control and poorer electrical properties.

Which route is appropriate depends on the target material and application. For a device, compare the required flake quality and electrical performance, area coverage, thickness consistency, substrate compatibility, equipment needs and production readiness—not just whether a process is described as scalable.

Does rolling-tape exfoliation work at industrial scale?

Not on the evidence reported in this study. The authors present a roll-to-roll arrangement and demonstrate devices, but those facts do not establish commercial production, industrial throughput or cost per gram. The paper suggests that larger cylinders and wider tape could extend the geometry. Chemistry World’s 2023 report identifies thickness and uniformity as remaining challenges, and describes scale-up as a future prospect rather than an accomplished industrial transition.

Whether that becomes a reliable manufacturing process depends on improving consistency and validating performance at larger scale.
