How Robots Can Navigate and Map a Lunar Cave Without GPS

Lunar cave robots would estimate their position with onboard sensors while building a map. Here is how SLAM and LiDAR fit into the larger mission challenges.

A robot can explore a lunar cave without GPS by estimating its position from onboard sensors while building a map of the surrounding terrain. This process, called simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), can use LiDAR for 3D distance measurements and combine them with cameras, inertial sensors, radar, and other inputs. It is only one part of the job: a real mission must also get the robot safely into the cave, move it over rough ground, supply power, and maintain communication.

How can a robot navigate a cave without GPS?

GPS and other satellite navigation signals do not give a robot its position underground. Instead, it must estimate how its position and orientation change as it moves, using measurements from sensors carried on the robot. That estimate is called its pose.

Pose estimation is difficult because small errors can accumulate as the robot travels. SLAM—simultaneous localization and mapping—addresses this by estimating the robot’s pose while it builds or updates a map. The two tasks inform each other: the map helps constrain where the robot may be, while the robot’s estimated movement helps place new observations into the map. If it recognizes a place it has mapped before, that revisit can help reduce accumulated drift; the benefit depends on the particular system and conditions.

SLAM does not mean the robot knows its position perfectly, nor does it make a cave safe to cross. It provides an ongoing estimate that can support route planning and exploration.

How do lunar robots map caves in the dark?

LiDAR measures cave geometry

LiDAR sends out laser light and measures how long it takes for reflections to return. Those distance measurements can be assembled into a point cloud or 3D model of nearby surfaces. Unlike a camera image, LiDAR range measurements do not rely on ambient visible light, making the technology useful in unilluminated settings. The resulting geometry can help show walls, floors, openings, and obstacles, but LiDAR alone is not a complete navigation system.

NASA’s KNaCK work uses mobile LiDAR and SLAM for mapping and navigation in GPS-denied settings, including unilluminated terrestrial cave analogs. That is evidence that researchers are testing the approach in relevant conditions on Earth—not evidence that a lunar cave robot has flown or that the equipment is ready for lunar deployment.

Other sensors can fill gaps

A robot can combine different measurements because any one sensor may become less useful in a particular environment. JPL’s NeBula autonomy description identifies vision, inertial measurement units (IMUs), LiDAR, radar, contact sensors, and other ranging systems as possible inputs. Its approach can switch between or fuse sensor types in response to environmental features. This describes a general autonomy architecture, not a claim that every listed sensor is installed on a lunar cave robot.

  • Inertial sensors measure changes in motion and orientation, helping estimate movement between observations.
  • Cameras can provide visual features and stereo depth when the scene is visible and contains usable detail.
  • Radar and ranging systems can provide additional information about nearby surfaces or obstacles, depending on the sensor and conditions.
  • Contact sensors can report physical contact, which may help when the robot is close to a surface or obstacle.

Fusing these inputs can make navigation more resilient than relying on one modality. It cannot guarantee reliable measurements everywhere, so a system must also recognize when its inputs are uncertain and adapt its behavior.

A map must help the robot move

A useful exploration map is more than a picture of cave walls. It can represent geometry and traversability—the surfaces and routes that may be safe to cross—and support route planning. JPL describes topological, semantic, and geometric mapping frameworks for GPS-denied environments, including subsurface caves. These are ways of representing places and relationships, features and meaning, and physical shape; the appropriate representation depends on what the robot needs to do.

What else must a cave mission solve?

Navigation is only one part of cave exploration. A robot must first reach the cave, identify a safe access point, descend without becoming stuck or damaged, and then travel over uneven floors and around large obstacles. Once underground, the cave may block direct line-of-sight communication with the surface. The mission also needs a plan for power and for returning useful data.

NASA’s 2023 Guidance, Navigation, and Control Technology Assessment identifies cave entry, irregular and blocky floors, darkness, autonomous localization, and out-of-line-of-sight operation as challenges. Those problems cannot be solved by SLAM alone: mobility, descent safety, power, communication, and science instruments need to be designed into the mission.

ESA’s proposed mission sequence begins at the surface. The robot or support system would scout the rim of a pit and choose an access point, lower a probe while measuring the pit walls, and then explore the floor and look for a route into a lava tube. ESA also identifies communication with the surface, cave-rover power, and environmental instruments as mission needs. This is a proposed baseline, not an approved or flown mission plan.

Concept Access and mobility Mapping and support Status and scope
Tethered semi-autonomous rover, DFKI/Bremen study A tethered deployment into a tube, with the rover exploring away from the entry. The tether concept supplies communication and energy. ESA describes mapping in a terrestrial Tenerife lava tube as prior work associated with the concept. Study concept; the terrestrial work does not establish lunar performance.
Würzburg / Daedalus spherical probe Lowered by tether, then able to move independently. 3D LiDAR and stereo cameras; intended to model the cave entrance and initial tube. Mission concept selected for study, not an operational lunar robot.
Oviedo surface crane and cave robots A surface crane lowers robots into the cave. A surface solar-supply concept; a charging head was intended to provide wireless power and data transfer. Investigated concept, not verified as flight hardware.
Manchester cooperative or hopping robots Small, agile hopping vehicles intended for complex terrain. Networked robots would share navigation and mapping data. Study concept; no lunar cave deployment is established.

ESA’s 2021 account of the Daedalus and Oviedo approaches describes them as ideas being considered in a study, not as a selected lunar mission architecture. These concepts illustrate different engineering trade-offs: a tether can support communications and power but constrains deployment; independent movement can expand exploration but raises the demands on onboard autonomy and energy; multiple robots can share information but also require coordination and a way to exchange data.

What do Earth-based cave tests prove—and what do they not?

NASA’s KNaCK work demonstrates mobile LiDAR and SLAM testing in terrestrial GPS-denied and unilluminated analog environments. JPL’s NeBula page describes an autonomy architecture implemented across terrestrial and planetary-analog missions, including GPS-free navigation for difficult perceptual conditions. Together, these sources support the relevance of onboard mapping and sensor-fusion methods for exploration.

They do not establish how a system would perform in lunar gravity, vacuum, radiation, extreme temperatures, lunar dust, launch conditions, or a mission’s power budget. An Earth cave test is useful analog evidence, not proof of lunar flight performance. NASA’s Lunar Surface Technology material also identifies cave voids as an area for technology development and discusses CADRE’s cooperative mapping demonstration; that is related development work, not a lunar cave deployment.
