Robotaxis use exterior sensors to understand the road, and some services also use cabin cameras or microphones for support, safety, and vehicle-readiness tasks. A sensor detecting something does not automatically mean a continuous recording is saved or sent to the operator: what happens depends on the service, sensor, purpose, trigger, and market.
How robotaxi sensors work together
There is no single sensor setup shared by every robotaxi. Cameras provide visual information about traffic lights, road users, and construction zones. Waymo describes cameras with a 360-degree field of view and lists lidar and radar as parts of its Waymo Driver. Zoox describes cameras, lidar, radar, and long-wave infrared sensors providing a 360-degree view. These are descriptions of those companies’ systems, not specifications for every autonomous vehicle. Waymo’s FAQ and Zoox’s technology page explain their respective systems.

Multiple sensors can operate together. Uber’s road-data notice describes research vehicles collecting camera, lidar, and radar data along with location and time information. That notice covers outward-facing collection for public-road research; it distinguishes that activity from information collected when a customer requests or receives a ride through Uber’s apps. Uber’s Road Data Collection Privacy Hub explains the scope.
What exterior cameras may capture
Exterior cameras record the roadway and surrounding driving environment. That footage can incidentally include people, facial features, and license plates. Uber says it uses road footage to train and validate AI-based perception systems and improve autonomous driving. Waymo describes exterior cameras as supporting traffic-light and construction-zone recognition; its privacy statement also identifies mapping, safe service delivery, and technology improvement as purposes. See Uber’s notice and Waymo’s August 2026 privacy statement.

Waymo’s help page says it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals. That is Waymo’s statement about its own practices, not a guarantee about every operator. Waymo’s cameras and microphones FAQ provides its explanation.
What cabin cameras are used for
Interior cameras have different purposes from road-facing sensors. Waymo lists cleanliness checks, finding lost property, emergency assistance, checking in-car rules, service improvement, and safety and security. Its Support team may review video in certain circumstances, such as after an issue is reported, and may occasionally access live video in urgent circumstances. Waymo’s FAQ describes these uses.

Tesla’s Robotaxi notice says cabin-camera data is not sent during an active ride except in specified circumstances, including support, occupancy detection, or a safety event. It also describes rider opt-in and an on-screen indicator when the camera is active. After a ride, Tesla says the cabin camera may help check vehicle readiness, such as cleanliness or whether an item was left behind. These rules describe Tesla’s service and should not be assumed to apply to other robotaxis. Tesla’s privacy notice covers its stated practices.

Audio detection does not necessarily mean ordinary cabin conversation is continuously recorded and uploaded. Waymo says cabin microphones are on during calls with Rider Support or when a rider actively enables them. Separately, its vehicles use an audio detection system to identify police and emergency sirens; Waymo says technical and procedural safeguards are intended to limit collection of human voice data. Waymo’s FAQ explains both functions.

Tesla says its vehicles can detect road sounds such as nearby sirens to help yield to emergency vehicles. According to Tesla, siren detection is processed locally and is not saved or transmitted to the company unless a rider opts in to share sound-detection data. Tesla separately says account-associated audio is transmitted when a support request is initiated or a safety event occurs, and describes an indicator when the microphone is in use. These are Tesla-specific statements. Tesla’s privacy notice sets out the distinction.
What happens to collected data
Depending on the operator and the collection context, data may support real-time driving, perception-system training and validation, customer support, safety, or technology improvement. Access, partner sharing, retention, and rider controls differ by provider.

How to check a robotaxi service’s privacy practices
Before riding, consult the current privacy notice for the particular operator and market. Check the following details rather than assuming all robotaxis follow the same rules:
