How Retro Arcade Fits Eight Classic Games Into One Plain-TypeScript Browser Cabinet

Retro Arcade combines eight classic games in a shared browser cabinet. Here’s how its TypeScript logic, Canvas rendering, DOM controls, and Gomoku worker fit together.

Retro Arcade puts Snake, Tetris, Breakout, Flappy, 2048, Minesweeper, Sudoku, and Gomoku behind one browser-game interface, built with TypeScript and Canvas 2D rather than a runtime framework. Its author, Minjia Hu, describes the whole build as about 35 kB gzipped, excluding fonts; that is a project-reported size, not an independent measurement or a load-speed guarantee.

One cabinet, eight games

The games share a cabinet-style shell instead of each presenting a separate application. The shell supplies a consistent top bar and play area, along with common features such as hints, pause, mute, back controls, and a result overlay. Individual game modules plug into that shell through a shared interface and context.

That arrangement gives the collection a consistent frame while letting each game keep its own rules and board. The project author says keyboard and touch input are supported across the collection, while noting that mobile layout and touch interaction still need tuning.

How the TypeScript architecture works

Rules stay separate from rendering

Each game separates its state and rules from its display and input handling. In the repository’s described structure, logic.ts contains game logic without DOM or Canvas calls; index.ts draws the game and translates user input into calls to that logic.

Arcade1Up Ms. Pac-Man Class of '81 Deluxe Arcade, 12 Retro Games
  • Classic Arcade Experience: Enjoy 12 legendary games from 1981 on a full-size cabinet with real-feel joysticks, buttons, and authentic arcade-style gameplay
  • Vibrant 17" Display: Features a crisp BOE 17" LCD screen that brings retro graphics to life with bright colors and sharp details for immersive gaming fun
  • Wi-Fi Leaderboards: Connect to Wi-Fi and compete with players nationwide by posting high scores on global leaderboards—no subscription required
  • Premium Retro Design: Over 5 feet tall with a sleek cabinet, light-up marquee, and faux coin door for a nostalgic look that enhances any game room or space
  • Crisp Stereo Sound: Dual speakers deliver classic arcade soundtracks and effects just like you remember, bringing every game to life with rich audio

This separation makes rules easier to test without launching a browser interface. Hu uses a 2048 row-merge operation as an example: it can be tested as an ordinary function, independently of the board drawing.

Canvas for boards, DOM for controls

Canvas 2D draws visual play areas such as boards, grids, blocks, and sprites. Controls that benefit from browser semantics—such as digit entry or difficulty choices—remain real DOM buttons. Hu’s stated reasons include built-in focus behavior, keyboard access, and easier touch-target sizing.

Arcade1Up Pac-Man Deluxe Arcade Gaming Cabinet, 14 Classic Games
  • 14 Classic Games Included: Play PAC-MAN, Galaga, Dig Dug, Pac-Land, Mappy, and more—14 built-in titles deliver hours of iconic retro arcade fun at home
  • Authentic Arcade Experience: Real-feel joystick and buttons let you dodge ghosts, eat pellets, and chase high scores just like you did in the arcade
  • Crisp 17-Inch Display: BOE color monitor brings every glowing maze and character to life with sharp visuals that stay true to the original arcade look
  • Wi-Fi Leaderboards: Compete with players across the country by posting high scores online using built-in Wi-Fi—no quarters required
  • Deluxe Cabinet Design: Over 5 feet tall with a light-up marquee, molded faux coin door, and sleek cabinet that adds retro style to any game room or space

This is a practical division rather than an all-Canvas rule. Canvas is suited to custom game visuals; DOM elements preserve familiar interaction behavior for controls. The project’s implementation description does not establish an independent accessibility audit.

Build tools are not runtime frameworks

The repository identifies Vite and TypeScript as build-time tools, with DOM and Canvas 2D used in the browser. Calling the project framework-free refers to its runtime architecture; it does not mean the source has no build tooling or that it runs TypeScript directly in the browser.

What the 35 kB claim means

Hu describes the whole build as about 35 kB gzipped, with fonts excluded. Treat this as the author’s published approximate build-size figure, not a verified benchmark. The source does not provide a measured page-load time, a guaranteed frame rate, or an independently tested performance result.

The author also says game modules are dynamically imported when selected. That can keep games the player has not opened out of the initial payload, but code splitting does not shrink the total code in the full build. Initial payload and total build size answer different questions.

Gomoku’s AI runs off the UI thread

For Gomoku, Hu describes a minimax search with alpha-beta pruning that runs in a Web Worker at three search depths. Running the search in a worker keeps its computation off the browser’s main UI thread, so the interface is less directly blocked by that work.

There is a trade-off: when a new game starts, the application increments a token and ignores replies from older searches. It does not cancel those searches. A stale search can therefore continue using CPU even though its result will no longer be used.

Testing, requirements, and project disclosures

Hu reports 269 unit tests and 28 Playwright end-to-end tests in CI. These are project-reported counts and status, not results independently rerun here. The repository README lists commands for running the checks locally and gives the following development requirements and browser versions:

  • Node.js: 20.19+ or 22.12+ for development.
  • Browsers listed by the project: Chrome 99+, Safari 16+, and Firefox 112+.

These are the project’s stated requirements, not a separate compatibility test across devices or browser versions.

The project sources say there is no backend, scores are stored in localStorage, and Google Fonts are the only third-party requests. Those are the author’s and README’s disclosures; no network traffic was independently inspected.

Where the implementation still has rough edges

Hu specifically flags Tetris’s icon-only touch controls and ongoing mobile layout and touch tuning as areas for improvement. Those caveats matter if choosing the collection primarily for phone play: the project describes touch support, but its own author does not present the mobile experience as finished.
