A direct USB connection may work too, but its cable and setup depend on the camera model.
Transfer photos with an SD card

Turn off the camera if its manual recommends doing so, then remove the SD card. Make sure the photos you want are stored on that card.

Insert the card into a compatible built-in slot on the PC. If the PC has no matching slot, use a USB card reader that supports the card format and connects to a port available on the computer.

Open Photos from the Start menu. Choose Import, select the connected card or device, choose the photos to bring in, and select a destination folder. Microsoft documents importing photos and videos from camera SD cards and USB drives in Photos: Manage photos and videos with Microsoft Photos app.

Wait for the import to finish. Open the destination folder and check several files before removing or changing anything on the card.
Choose a transfer method

Microsoft’s general import guidance directs camera owners to their camera manufacturer for model-specific instructions: Import photos and videos from phone to PC. Its detailed connection steps on that page are for phones, not a universal camera procedure.

Use the Photos app you have
Windows may have the current Photos app or the separate Photos Legacy app. Their interfaces differ, so follow the labels shown in the one you opened. In Photos Legacy, the documented route is Import > From a connected device; select the items and destination when prompted. See Microsoft’s What is Photos Legacy?.

The SD card is missing in Photos

Check whether Windows recognizes the card and whether it is fully inserted.

If the PC has no compatible reader, try a card reader that matches the card format and the computer’s available port. You can also try another available port.

If the card still is not available, avoid formatting it or deleting files while you are trying to recover access to the photos.

The camera is missing over USB

Check the camera maker’s instructions for the correct cable, connection mode, and settings for your model.

If you have another compatible cable, try it; cables and camera connection requirements vary. Do not assume phone-specific USB guidance applies to cameras.

The import menus do not match
Confirm whether you opened Photos or Photos Legacy. The current app’s workflow and Legacy’s Import > From a connected device label are not interchangeable.

Copying leaves the original on the card and creates another file in the destination. Moving changes the item’s location. For a camera-card transfer, check that the imported files open from the PC before deleting originals or formatting the card. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Photos app guidance.
