It cannot solve India’s e-waste problem on its own: devices that cannot be safely or economically repaired still need reuse, formal collection and environmentally sound recycling.
How can repair help solve India’s e-waste problem?
When a device can be restored safely and remains useful, repair may postpone the purchase of a replacement and the disposal of the original. That is a practical way to slow the flow of electronics into the waste system, not a way to eliminate that waste.

The available figures do not quantify how much Indian e-waste repair prevents, how much of the national stream is repairable, or how repair compares with replacement across device types. Its contribution should therefore be understood as a plausible part of a broader circular system, rather than a measured national solution.

Published estimates are not a single interchangeable series. In its 2026 report, NITI Aayog cites estimates from the ITU and UNITAR’s 2024 Global E-waste Monitor: about 2.76 million metric tonnes in 2020 and 6.19 million metric tonnes in 2024, with a projection of 14 million metric tonnes by 2030. The report also cites an annual growth rate of about 16.9% in that context. These are estimates reported by NITI Aayog, not direct measurements made by the report. Read the NITI Aayog report.

A separate Government of India series in a Rajya Sabha reply dated 19 December 2024 gives 1.75 million tonnes for FY 2023–24 and an estimated 1.94 million tonnes for FY 2024–25. Repair, refurbishment, reuse and recycling do different jobs
These options apply at different points in a device’s life. Repair fixes a device for continued use; refurbishment restores a used device, often for another user; resale or reuse keeps it in service with a new owner. Recycling handles materials after a device is no longer suitable for use. Keeping these routes distinct helps avoid treating repair as a substitute for responsible end-of-life handling.

How to decide what to do with an old device
- Check for safety first. If a device or battery is damaged, swollen, unusually hot or otherwise unsafe, do not attempt a repair that could worsen the hazard. Seek qualified service or ask a collection provider how to handle it.
- Assess whether repair is worthwhile. Consider whether compatible parts and skilled service are available, the likely service life after repair, and the repair cost relative to the device’s value. A low-cost repair that restores useful life may make sense; a costly repair with uncertain results may not.
- Consider another user. If the device still works or can be restored, refurbishment, resale or direct reuse can keep it in service without requiring the original owner to keep it.
- Use an appropriate end-of-life route if reuse is impractical. Look for a current, authorised collection or recycling option in your area, and confirm that it accepts the device. Collection availability and service coverage can vary.
For hands-on work, tool requirements vary by device, and some repairs are better left to qualified technicians. A repair toolkit is not a substitute for model-specific guidance, compatible parts or safe handling.
What can I do with old electronics in India?
Start with the device’s condition and your local options. NITI Aayog reports 2,808 collection centres and describes limited access to formal collection, consumers retaining unused electronics, and a substantial role for informal networks. It recommends stronger collection infrastructure and consumer awareness. The report’s references to collection platforms are examples in that policy discussion, not confirmation that any named service currently operates in a particular location. India’s regulatory framework includes the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, and subsequent amendments listed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Repair is most useful when it safely restores a device that still meets someone’s needs. Refurbishment and reuse can extend its life further by putting it in another person’s hands. Collection and recycling remain necessary for equipment that has reached the end of useful service. Better consumer access to collection and clear information about safe handling matter alongside repair, especially where formal collection access is limited.
