A Matter smart lock can make remote access and smart-home control more secure and interoperable, but Matter certification does not tell you how well the lock resists a burglar who forces the door, defeats the latch, or attacks the frame. Matter is a connectivity standard, not a burglary-resistance grade. To judge physical reliability, look at the exact deadbolt’s mechanical evidence, the door and frame it is installed in, and the manufacturer’s support for its connected features.
Two separate questions: digital protection and physical resistance
When people ask whether a Matter lock is reliable against burglars, they usually mean two things. Can someone reach the lock through its wireless connection? And can someone get through the door? Matter addresses the first. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) describes Matter security features such as unique device identity, data encryption, and fine-grained access control. These protect communication and control who may do what. They do nothing to the bolt, the strike plate, or the wood around them.

What Matter certification does and does not establish
A Matter certificate confirms that a product interoperates with other certified devices and controllers. It is not a residential deadbolt grade. The Matter 1.3 specification, dated April 17, 2024, says its security best practices should be implemented by Matter implementers, and it states: “Matter certification will not itself test that these requirements have been met.” That sentence applies to the security best practices in that section of that version, but the principle holds more broadly. A certified lock has passed interoperability checks. It has not passed a forced-entry test.

What the mechanical standard covers
The relevant American benchmark for residential deadbolts is ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2025, which is listed as the current residential deadbolt standard. It sets durability, security, and finish tests. Those tests are performed under laboratory conditions. The standard itself notes that results in actual use vary with installation, door and frame construction, maintenance, and environmental conditions.
BHMA’s Secure Home guidance says certified residential deadbolts and locksets are evaluated for security, durability, and finish, and it defines security as how well a lock or deadbolt withstands impact. A residential label therefore describes tested hardware performance. It does not describe the complete installed door.

The door and frame often decide the outcome
A well-rated bolt set into a weak frame can still fail. Before trusting any deadbolt, check the following:
- Door thickness and backset match the lock maker’s stated requirements for that exact model.
- Full throw extends into the strike and aligns without forcing the door.
- Frame condition is sound, with strike screws biting into solid framing rather than thin trim or rotted wood.
- Installation follows the maker’s current instructions for that model.
If the door or frame is damaged, nonstandard, or doubtful, ask a qualified locksmith or security professional to assess it. The ANSI standards material makes the same recommendation. Strike-plate reinforcement or longer fasteners are worth asking about as possible improvements, but no specific kit has been tested or compared here, and a kit alone does not make a door burglar-proof.

- True Hands-Free Unlocking with UWB Technology: Experience a new era of smart access — UWB (Ultra-Wideband) detects your incoming presence, direction, and intent to unlock automatically as you approach. It provides a faster, more convenient, and highly secure way to enter your home without touching the lock. Perfect when your hands are full, you're wearing gloves, or arriving in the rain. (Note: UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and is supported on Apple Watch Series 6 or later (excluding SE) running watchOS 11.5+ and iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE & iPhone 16e) running iOS 18.5+.)
- All-in-One Unlocking Options: Enjoy Apple home key tap-to-unlock (requires an Apple Thread-enabled Matter controller: HomePod 2nd Gen, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K 2021/2022), plus fingerprint, touchscreen passcode, voice assistant control, app remote access, NFC card support (card sold separately), and a physical key, giving you flexible, reliable ways to enter your home in any situation.
- Matter Over Thread for Multi-Ecosystem Compatibility: Built with Matter over Thread, the U400 can connect to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy the unique features of each ecosystem. Thread offers faster response, more stable connectivity, lower power consumption, and secure data transmission. Note: A Thread-enabled Matter controller from each ecosystem is required for its respective platform.
- Convenient Rechargeable Power System: Powered by a rechargeable and removable lithium battery that lasts up to 6 months per charge. Use the lock's USB-C port to recharge without taking the lock offline, or remove the battery and charge it separately. A low-battery voice alert will notify you when the battery drops below 20%, ensuring you never get caught off guard.
- Certified Security & Outdoor Durability: BHMA-certified for proven protection, mechanical strength, and long-term reliability. The IP65-rated exterior guards against dust and water for dependable outdoor performance. Plus, the rekeyable design allows you to change the physical key without replacing the entire lock cylinder.
How to check a specific lock
- Find the exact model number on the lock body or packaging, not only the product family name.
- Look for the applicable residential deadbolt or lockset standard, such as ANSI/BHMA A156.40 for deadbolts, and confirm the stated grade or certification in the manufacturer’s current specification.
- Confirm that the rating applies to the complete installed assembly, not only to the bolt body.
- Look up the product in the CSA’s directory and note the Matter certificate ID and specification version.
- Confirm that your controller platform and the lock’s firmware support the Matter features you plan to rely on.
- Verify door fit, backset, and frame condition before installation, then recheck them after installation.
Comparison checklist
| Axis | What to check | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical security evidence | Exact model, applicable residential standard, stated grade, and whether the rating covers the installed assembly | ANSI/BHMA tests are laboratory-based; results vary with installation, frame construction, and maintenance (ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2025) |
| Door and frame fit | Door thickness, backset, deadbolt dimensions, frame condition, strike installation | Construction and installation affect real-world results; the maker’s instructions govern fit |
| Connected security and support | Matter certificate and specification version, firmware-update policy, supported controllers, handling of credentials and access codes | Matter 1.4.2 features need device and platform support (CSA, August 11, 2025); update duration: not stated in the CSA or BHMA material reviewed |
| Fallback access and power | Key or emergency access, low-battery warnings, battery replacement, behavior when the network or controller is offline | Not established for every listed product; check the exact model’s official documentation |
| Practical operation | Full locking, bolt alignment, auto-lock behavior, maintenance | These affect everyday use. They are not proof of resistance to a determined attacker |
Connected security: what Matter 1.4.2 adds
The CSA announced Matter 1.4.2 on August 11, 2025. It describes security enhancements including Vendor ID verification and Access Restriction Lists. Some of these require coordinated implementation by device makers and platforms. A lock certified against this version may therefore still lack a given feature on a particular controller or firmware version. Check the lock, controller, and app versions instead of assuming that every certified device implements every newer feature.
The CSA also notes that complete privacy protection depends on protections from the service provider and device maker, not only on the Matter standard itself. A lock can have strong encryption and still be exposed to physical attack at the lock, the door, the frame, or any other entry point.

Burglary statistics
No named, year-specific statistic comparing burglary outcomes for Matter locks with conventional locks appears in the official material reviewed. It is not established that Matter locks prevent a given share of burglaries or that they are statistically safer than a conventional deadbolt. Any judgment about a specific lock has to rest on that model’s mechanical evidence and on the door it is installed in.
