In Google Photos, Auto frame can recompose or extend a photo with AI. Apple Photos has standard crop and geometry controls, plus separate Apple Intelligence tools called Reframe and Extend. For unwanted edges or a target shape, crop; for tilt or skew, straighten or adjust perspective; for a subject that needs more space, check whether an AI reframing tool is available on your device.
What cropping and reframing actually change
A crop selects which existing part of an image remains visible. Dragging the crop boundary can remove distracting edges, emphasize a subject, or fit the photo to a format such as a square or vertical frame. Unless an editor fills in new pixels, the crop does not create image content beyond the original edges: it narrows what you see.

“Reframing” is broader and is not a single, identical control in both apps. In Google Photos, Auto frame can reposition the composition and may use AI to fill or extend background. Apple documents Reframe and Extend separately from its regular crop interface: Reframe adjusts perspective after capture, while Extend expands the edges of the original frame. The names and functions matter; these tools should not be mistaken for ordinary cropping or for one another.
Straightening and perspective adjustments solve a different problem. Straightening rotates the existing image to correct a tilted horizon or alignment. Perspective controls alter the geometry of the existing frame. They do not mean the editor has added space around the subject.

This comparison describes documented controls, not a head-to-head image-quality test. The official guides do not establish a performance winner, success rate, or quality score. Google Photos control lists also differ by platform, so an Android instruction should not be assumed to describe the iPhone app exactly.
Choose the right tool before editing
- Unwanted edge content: use Crop and move the boundary inward. This removes content from view rather than repairing or expanding the scene.
- Wrong output proportions: select a ratio suited to the destination, such as a square post or a vertical frame. A ratio constrains the shape of the retained image; it does not guarantee that the subject will be well positioned within it.
- Tilted horizon or alignment: use Straighten. Rotation may change which edge areas remain inside the final frame, so inspect the corners afterward.
- Skewed geometry: use Perspective where the app and platform expose that adjustment. This corrects how existing lines or planes appear, rather than adding background.
- Subject too close to the edge or image too tightly framed: look for Google Photos Auto frame or Apple Reframe/Extend, if available. These are the options that may change placement or expand the visible image area.
- Unsure whether the edit helps: compare it with the original before saving. Keep the version you prefer and confirm how the app handles undo for that save method.
How to crop or adjust a photo in Google Photos
Android
Google’s Android instructions place the tools under Edit > Crop. The documented controls include Crop, Straighten, Rotate by 90 degrees, Perspective, Auto frame, Aspect ratio, and Mirror. The available controls can depend on the device and the app, and Google says Auto frame output can vary by device.
- Open the photo in Google Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Crop to reveal the frame and available adjustments.
- Drag the crop handles to remove edges, or choose Aspect ratio when you need a particular shape.
- Use Straighten for a tilted frame. If the image needs geometric correction, use Perspective if the control is present.
- Use Auto frame when the composition is too tight or poorly placed and you want to try AI-assisted recomposition or background extension. Inspect what it fills before accepting the result.
- Tap Save or the app’s save option, then compare the result with the original.
Google also documents rotation and mirroring in this control set. Rotation turns the image in 90-degree increments; mirroring flips it. Neither operation is the same as expanding the scene around a subject.

iPhone and iPad
Google’s iPhone/iPad guide describes crop handles, aspect ratio, 90-degree rotation, straightening, Auto Frame, and flipping. It does not present the same documented Perspective control list as the Android guide. If perspective correction is essential, check what the app actually offers on that device rather than following Android-specific steps.
- Open a photo in Google Photos and tap Edit, then open the crop controls.
- Drag the handles to trim, or choose an aspect ratio to constrain the frame.
- Use rotation, straightening, or flipping only for the corresponding orientation problem.
- If Auto Frame is offered, preview its composition and any generated background before saving.
- Press and hold the preview to compare the edit with the original, then save when satisfied.
Google’s iPhone/iPad guide says certain editing features require iOS 18 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Those requirements apply to selected editing features; they should not be treated as prerequisites for every basic crop action. The same guide’s US-English availability note concerns AI Enhance, a separate feature, not a universal requirement for cropping or Auto Frame.
How to crop in Apple Photos on iPhone
Apple’s standard crop workflow is available separately from Apple Intelligence. It supports manual cropping, preset ratios, rotation, flipping, straightening, and vertical or horizontal perspective adjustment. Dragging a corner keeps the photo’s original aspect ratio unless you unlock that ratio.

- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit, then open the crop controls.
- Drag a corner or pinch to set the visible area. To change proportions freely while dragging, unlock the original ratio; otherwise the original ratio is maintained.
- Choose a preset when a particular output shape is needed. Apple lists options including Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, and 5:7.
- Adjust the straightening slider for a tilted frame. Use the vertical or horizontal perspective control when the geometry looks skewed.
- Rotate by 90 degrees or flip horizontally if the orientation is wrong.
- Review the full image and tap Done to save the edit.
These controls alter the crop or geometry of the existing photo. If the issue is that the subject needs more surrounding space, Apple’s separate Extend tool—not a wider crop boundary—is the relevant documented feature to investigate.
When Apple Reframe or Extend may help
Apple describes Reframe and Extend as Apple Intelligence tools. Reframe can adjust perspective after capture. Extend expands the edges of the original photo frame. That makes them distinct from the standard crop controls, which select and adjust the visible region.
Apple’s guide specifies Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Availability also depends on language and region, and usage limits may apply. These conditions belong to Reframe and Extend; they are not requirements for using Apple’s ordinary crop, ratio, rotation, or straightening controls.

To try them, open the image’s editing tools and look for the Apple Intelligence Reframe or Extend option. Follow the on-screen instructions and inspect the result at the edges as well as around the subject. A generated extension changes the image beyond its original captured boundary, so decide whether that altered background is suitable for the photo’s purpose. If the option is missing, check device, operating-system, language, and regional eligibility rather than assuming that every iPhone Photos installation has it.
Save, compare, and preserve the original
For a meaningful before-and-after check, look at both the subject and the corners: straightening can change what fits, an aspect ratio can cut into important details, and AI extension can introduce newly filled background. Google Photos lets you press and hold the preview to compare an edit with the original.
