Rare-earth elements are ingredients in two important families of high-performance permanent magnets: neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo). They help engineers build compact, powerful magnets for applications such as some electric-vehicle traction motors and wind-turbine generators. The best choice depends on the required resistance to demagnetization, magnetic energy, operating temperature, size, weight and cost—not on a single measure of “strength.”
What “rare-earth compounds” means in a magnet
The phrase can suggest that finished magnets are made from rare-earth compounds alone. In the two principal magnet families discussed here, rare-earth elements are instead combined with other materials in engineered magnet formulations. NdFeB contains neodymium and often praseodymium alongside iron and boron; some formulations also use dysprosium or terbium. SmCo combines samarium with cobalt.

These materials are made into magnets, which then become components inside motors, generators and other products. They are not, by themselves, complete motors or generators.

Rare-earth inputs are selected to achieve a particular balance of properties. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies coercivity, maximum energy product and maximum operating temperature as key properties that influence which elements a magnet requires and in what quantities. As DOE puts it, “The intended use of a permanent magnet in a final product dictates the optimization of three key magnet properties that have an influence on which elements are needed and in what quantities.” (DOE supply-chain assessment, 2022)

Please note these are small‑dimension magnets; refer to product images and size chart for exact dimensions before purchasing
- Important Usage Reminder: Neodymium magnets are brittle. Do NOT allow magnets of different sizes to snap violently together, as impact may cause chipping or cracking. Keep away from pacemakers and electronic screens. Not suitable for small children without adult supervision. Not recommended for stainless‑steel / glass refrigerator doors. The magnetic flux of our product is below 50 kG²/mm²
- Coercivity describes resistance to demagnetization, which matters when a magnet faces opposing fields or demanding conditions.
- Maximum energy product indicates how much magnetic energy a material can provide in a given volume.
- Maximum operating temperature matters in hot motor or generator environments, where performance must be maintained.
NdFeB: strong performance in compact components
Neodymium-iron-boron magnets are associated with high magnetic energy performance, making them useful when a design benefits from a compact, lightweight magnetic component. Neodymium and praseodymium are light rare-earth inputs. Some NdFeB formulations also include dysprosium or terbium to improve resistance to demagnetization at elevated temperatures, particularly in sintered magnets.
DOE distinguishes between bonded and sintered NdFeB. It gives a rough composition for sintered NdFeB of approximately 30% rare-earth material, 69% iron and 1% boron by weight. Those figures are an approximate description in the report, not a specification for every grade or finished product.

NdFeB magnets are used in some traction motors and direct-drive wind generators. In direct-drive wind systems, the OECD says they can support efficient operation at low rotational speeds and help enable compact, lightweight designs. Not every electric vehicle or wind turbine uses this configuration or these magnets.
SmCo: a choice for hotter operating conditions
Samarium-cobalt magnets are another principal rare-earth permanent-magnet family. DOE describes SmCo as more resistant to demagnetization at higher temperatures than NdFeB, making it more suitable for some high-temperature applications where weight is not a concern. The OECD’s 2026 report likewise describes SmCo as excelling at extreme temperatures, while having lower magnetic strength than NdFeB.

- 【Stronger Magnetic Force】Compared with individual NdFeB countersunk magnets, cup magnets have the advantage of being smaller in size and stronger in magnetic force, the magnetic force is 5 times stronger than normal rare earth magnets.Per strong magnet can up to 150 pound holding power.
- 【Nice Design】The round countersunk hole magnet cup design increases the beauty of the product, the steel shell concentrates the strong magnetic force on one side only, the other three sides are almost non-magnetic, well greatly increase the holding power.
- 【Sturable】Neodymium magnets are very brittle, and the steel shell protects magnets so that strong magnets are not easily broken. The magnetic force is permanent and the service life is super long.
- 【Wide Application】Due to its excellent performance, strong cup magnets are widely used in home or industry, such as clips in automation equipment, door closers, tool holders, fixtures, providing magnetic base mounting for lamps, clocks, machines, mirrors and so on. Heavy duty also comes with 6 stainless steel screws to increase the range of product usage.
- 【Precautions】As the neodymium magnet is very fragile and strong magnetic, when you use it you must remove it in a flat position, and after removing it, it is forbidden to collide it with other metal objects (including another magnet) to avoid injury! We are a magnet supplier with professional strength. You can certainly find strong cup magnets with holes you want in my shop!
How engineers choose between magnet materials
Material selection is an application-specific trade-off. The sources establish qualitative differences between the main magnet families, but do not provide one universal grade-by-grade comparison. Actual performance depends on the magnet grade, geometry, manufacturing and operating conditions.
| Material or family | Relevant characteristics | Typical design consideration |
|---|---|---|
| NdFeB | High magnetic energy performance; some formulations use Dy or Tb to improve resistance to demagnetization at elevated temperatures. | Useful where compact, lightweight components and strong magnetic performance matter. |
| SmCo | More resistant to demagnetization at higher temperatures than NdFeB; lower magnetic strength than NdFeB, according to the OECD. | Useful in some hot operating environments where weight is not a concern. |
| Ferrite | Established rare-earth-free alternative; lower magnetic strength than NdFeB, according to the OECD. | An option when the design can accommodate its performance trade-off. |
| Alnico | Established rare-earth-free alternative; more susceptible to demagnetization than NdFeB, according to the OECD. | An option when its greater susceptibility to demagnetization is acceptable. |
Beyond the broad differences in the table, compare the required coercivity, maximum energy product, operating temperature, component size and weight, and material cost and availability. No one property alone identifies the right magnet for every design.

Rare-earth-free options and ways to reduce material use
Ferrite and Alnico are commercially established permanent-magnet alternatives that do not rely on rare-earth inputs. The OECD reports that ferrites have lower magnetic strength than NdFeB, while Alnico is more susceptible to demagnetization. These differences can constrain a design or require different component dimensions and operating conditions.
Materials research also explores reducing rare-earth inputs through techniques such as grain-boundary diffusion and more efficient microstructures, as well as substituting other elements. The OECD discusses greater use of praseodymium and substitutions involving cerium or lanthanum; it notes that Ce- and La-substituted magnets currently have lower performance than standard NdFeB. These are material-development approaches, not universal recommendations for a particular motor or generator.

What the available use figures do—and do not—show
A 2023 U.S. Geological Survey-hosted study estimated that U.S. requirements represented 15%–16.5% of world requirements in 2015. The authors used 2015 because it was the latest year with the most complete information available for their analysis. That historical estimate is not a current market share. (USGS-hosted study, 2023)
