How Quantum Memories Store and Retrieve Photons

Quantum memories transfer a photon’s quantum state into matter or a controlled optical loop, preserve its coherence, and release it on demand for quantum-network operations.

A quantum memory does not keep a photon sitting still. It coherently transfers the photon’s quantum state—its encoded amplitudes, phase and often polarization—into a material excitation, preserves that excitation for a controlled interval, then converts it back into a photon. The readout can be scheduled when a network needs the state.

The mechanism depends on the platform. Atomic ensembles may use electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), trapped-ion memories store information in ions, rare-earth-doped crystals use long-lived solid-state transitions, and fiber-loop devices circulate light through controlled switching. These systems solve the same synchronization problem in different physical ways.

What a quantum memory actually stores

A memory stores an unknown photonic quantum state, not a classical description that can be copied and reconstructed later. If a photon is prepared in a superposition, the memory must preserve the relative amplitudes and phase that define that superposition. For polarization encoding, for example, the state may be a coherent combination of horizontal and vertical polarization. For time-bin or frequency encoding, the relevant information is carried by temporal or spectral modes instead.

During storage, the original traveling-light excitation is mapped to matter or to a controlled optical path. Retrieval reverses that mapping. A successful device therefore has to preserve coherence while also suppressing loss, unwanted noise and distortion. Experiments test this with state fidelity, polarization preservation, interference visibility or another measurement suited to the encoding.

“Optical quantum memory is a device that can store the quantum state of photons and retrieve it with high fidelity on demand.”

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Lijun Ma, Xiao Tang and Oliver T. Slattery, 2020

The phrase “on demand” means that a control system chooses when to release a stored excitation within the device’s operating limits. It does not mean that storage is lossless or indefinitely long.

How an EIT atomic memory stores and retrieves a photon

Electromagnetically induced transparency is one of the clearest demonstrations of light-to-matter storage. The details below describe an atomic-ensemble implementation; other memories use different interactions and storage variables.

1. Prepare the atomic medium

An ensemble of atoms is arranged as a three-level lambda system. Two lower states are coupled through an excited state. A strong control laser is tuned so that the combined atom-and-light system has a narrow transparency window for a weak signal field.

2. Send in the signal photon

With the control field applied, the signal pulse enters the ensemble as a slowed optical excitation. Its field is distributed over many atoms rather than absorbed as an ordinary photon would be. The incoming light and the atomic ensemble form a collective excitation whose phase relationships follow the original optical state.

3. Turn the optical excitation into a spin wave

The control field is reduced, switched or shaped while the signal is inside the medium. This maps the photonic excitation into a collective atomic coherence commonly called a spin wave. The information is now encoded in the relative phases and populations of the atoms. No measurement of an unknown state is required, so the process does not amount to making a classical copy.

4. Hold the excitation

During the storage interval, the atoms must remain coherent. Motion, magnetic-field fluctuations, collisions, laser noise and imperfect control can all reduce fidelity. The useful lifetime is therefore set by the platform and protocol, not by a universal constant.

5. Apply a read control pulse

A later control pulse converts the collective atomic coherence back into an optical field. By choosing the pulse timing, the experimenter chooses when the output leaves the memory. The retrieved pulse can then be sent to a detector, another memory or a fiber link.

Polarization in a warm-rubidium demonstration

A 2024 experiment with independent room-temperature rubidium memories used a dual-rail arrangement: an arbitrary polarization state was represented as a coherent spatial superposition of two rails. Changing the timing of the read pulse retrieved the stored polarization on demand. The work also interfered retrieved single-photon-level pulses, showing why phase preservation matters. This is an example of an EIT implementation, not a recipe that every quantum-memory architecture follows.

Other physical ways to make a quantum memory

Trapped ions and neutral atoms

In trapped-ion systems, the quantum state can be stored in long-lived internal states of ions and coupled to emitted or received photons. NIST says lifetimes of more than 30 minutes can be realized in trapped ions. That statement describes a demonstrated capability of the storage system, not a complete long-distance repeater operating for 30 minutes. Efficiently coupling such memories to telecom-wavelength photons remains an engineering challenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIST also describes work with warm and cold cesium ensembles, as well as neutral-atom and ion-based approaches. Their control fields, wavelengths, cooling requirements and coherence limits differ from the rubidium example.

Rare-earth-ion-doped crystals

Rare-earth ions embedded in a crystal provide narrow optical transitions and potentially long coherence. A 2025 study of an integrated europium-doped yttrium orthosilicate (151Eu:Y2SiO5) waveguide reported a 1.9 ms 1/e lifetime and 12.0 ± 0.05% efficiency at a stated storage time of 1.021 ms. The work used dynamical decoupling to extend coherence. The lifetime is a decay-time metric for that protocol; it should not be read as the time for which every input photon is retrieved with the quoted efficiency.

Fiber-loop and switch memories

A fiber-loop memory keeps the optical state in a guided path and uses an active switch to send the pulse around the loop for a selected number of cycles. This avoids mapping the state into an atomic material, but every pass introduces transmission loss and switching imperfections. Cheng, Evans and Pittman reported 54.1 ± 0.2% pass-through transmission in a fiber-coupled loop-and-switch platform, with high-fidelity storage and retrieval of polarization qubits for active storage times of approximately 40 ns to 1.5 µs. For N storage cycles, the reported storage efficiency scales approximately as 0.5(N+1), so longer dwell times reduce the recovered fraction.

What must be preserved during storage

“Keeping the photon” is shorthand for preserving whichever degrees of freedom carry its quantum information.

  • Amplitude: The relative weights of the components in a superposition must remain correct.
  • Phase: A random phase shift destroys interference even if the average brightness looks acceptable.
  • Encoding: Polarization, time-bin, frequency, spatial mode or another chosen basis must survive the interaction.
  • Timing and waveform: A distorted or delayed pulse can fail to interfere with photons from another node.
  • Low noise: Control-light leakage, fluorescence and detector background must not overwhelm the retrieved signal.

These requirements explain why a memory can have a long lifetime yet be unsuitable for a particular network. A device may preserve a state well but accept only a narrow bandwidth, or provide broad bandwidth while losing too much light after repeated storage cycles.

How researchers compare quantum memories

No single number identifies the best memory. The following metrics answer different engineering questions.

Metric What it measures Why the qualification matters
Storage-and-retrieval efficiency Fraction of the input state recovered Check whether the number is internal to the memory or includes coupling, switching and detector losses.
Fidelity or state preservation Agreement between input and retrieved quantum states A bright output can still have poor fidelity if phase or polarization changed.
Storage lifetime How long coherence survives A 1/e lifetime, optical lifetime and spin-wave coherence time are different quantities.
Bandwidth and pulse duration Photon spectra and temporal widths accepted A memory must match the source and the network’s filtering.
Noise and signal-to-background Distinguishability of retrieved photons from unwanted light Control-field leakage can limit usable fidelity even when transmission is high.
On-demand access Whether readout timing can be selected Waiting longer may lower efficiency or coherence.
Capacity and multiplexing Number of temporal, spectral or spatial modes stored More modes can raise network throughput without changing one-mode efficiency.
Networking compatibility Wavelength, fiber coupling, stability and interfaces A laboratory result may require additional frequency conversion or stabilization before deployment.

The published examples illustrate why these figures cannot be ranked as a head-to-head contest. The fiber-loop result emphasizes pass-through and short, selectable storage; the integrated crystal emphasizes millisecond-scale coherence with 12.0 ± 0.05% efficiency at 1.021 ms; and the warm-vapor work emphasizes on-demand polarization retrieval and interference.

How retrieval supports quantum networks

Photon arrival and entanglement generation are often probabilistic. A memory lets one node hold a successful state while another link is still being attempted. Once neighboring links succeed, the stored state can be released for interference or entanglement swapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeaters and long-distance links

In a quantum repeater, memories at intermediate stations can wait for heralded entanglement on multiple shorter links. Readout then enables entanglement swapping, extending correlations over a longer distance. NIST identifies repeaters and long-distance quantum key distribution as major application areas.

Memory-assisted measurement-device-independent QKD

A 2024 warm-vapor study discussed buffering random polarization qubits for variable-delay measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution and Bell-state measurements. Such a system must know when a usable event has occurred and coordinate the release with other nodes.

Real-time heralding remains a major milestone. A memory by itself does not provide a repeater: sources, telecom-compatible transmission, detectors, timing electronics, stabilization, low-noise control and reliable interfaces are all required. NIST characterizes scalable implementations as difficult and ongoing fundamental research, not routine infrastructure.

What the headline numbers do—and do not—prove

  • 54.1 ± 0.2%: Pass-through transmission reported in the 2025 fiber-loop study. Its cycle-dependent scaling means efficiency falls as storage cycles accumulate.
  • 1.9 ms: 1/e lifetime reported for the 2025 integrated europium-doped crystal study. The same report gives 12.0 ± 0.05% efficiency at 1.021 ms.
  • More than 30 minutes: A capability NIST says can be realized in trapped ions; it is not evidence that a complete telecom repeater has operated for that duration.
  • 50% efficiency: A figure stated in a 2025 Optica Quantum 2.0 conference abstract by Yang Wang and Mehdi Namazi for entanglement between a telecom photon and a quantum memory. Because it is an abstract claim, it does not provide the detailed setup needed for a full comparison.

Current maturity and practical limitations

Quantum memories are specialist research and network components rather than consumer accessories. Commercial offerings described publicly are institutional infrastructure; for example, Qunnect presents its Carina system as a turnkey entanglement-distribution platform and announced a strategic partnership with Monarch Quantum in August 2026. Those descriptions are company claims and can change as deployments evolve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no established general-purpose consumer memory, replacement part or plug-in accessory for storing individual photons. Laboratory lasers, vapor cells, crystals and optical switches require specialized alignment, control electronics and safety procedures; buying one component does not create a functioning memory.

A practical way to evaluate a claimed memory

  1. Identify the platform: Ask whether the device uses an atomic ensemble, ion, crystal, fiber loop or another mechanism.
  2. Define the encoded state: Record whether the experiment stores polarization, time-bin, frequency, spatial mode or a combination.
  3. Separate efficiency types: Check whether the reported percentage is internal, end-to-end, pass-through or conditional on a herald.
  4. Read the lifetime definition: Determine whether it is a 1/e decay time, optical population lifetime, spin-wave coherence time or a protocol-specific hold time.
  5. Check noise and fidelity: Look for state tomography, interference visibility, signal-to-background and control-field leakage measurements.
  6. Check interfaces: Verify wavelength, fiber coupling, pulse bandwidth, detector timing and whether frequency conversion is required.
  7. Check access mode: Confirm whether retrieval is genuinely selectable and how waiting affects efficiency.
  8. Check evidence level: Distinguish a peer-reviewed experiment, an indexed abstract and a vendor’s product description.

The central idea is simple but demanding: map a photon’s quantum state into a controllable degree of freedom, preserve its coherence, and reverse the mapping at the required time. Different memories make different compromises among efficiency, fidelity, lifetime, bandwidth, noise and network compatibility, so meaningful comparisons must keep those axes separate.
