A sufficiently powerful future quantum computer could threaten cryptocurrency systems that rely on elliptic-curve digital signatures. In Bitcoin, the key risk is that Shor’s algorithm could use an exposed public key to derive its corresponding private key, potentially letting an attacker authorize a spend. That is a conditional future risk, not evidence that today’s quantum computers can break Bitcoin: Bitcoin.org says computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography do not yet exist, and no dependable arrival date is established.
The threat is narrower than “quantum computers can break blockchains.” It concerns particular cryptographic mechanisms, how long public keys are exposed, and whether a network can coordinate a change before the threat becomes practical. Proposed Bitcoin mitigations remain proposals, while post-quantum standards published by NIST are not, by themselves, Bitcoin upgrades.

What part of cryptocurrency security is at risk?
The central concern is public-key digital signatures. A cryptocurrency uses a private key to authorize an action and a corresponding public key to verify that authorization. Bitcoin uses elliptic-curve cryptography for signatures, including ECDSA and Schnorr signatures. A private key is meant to remain secret; the public key is not secret, but conventional security depends on it being computationally infeasible to derive the private key from the public one.

Quantum computing changes the assumptions behind that protection. Shor’s algorithm can solve the discrete logarithm problem much more efficiently than known classical methods. If a future quantum computer were powerful and reliable enough to run it against the relevant elliptic-curve keys, an attacker could potentially recover a private key from its exposed public key. With that key, the attacker could create a valid signature and attempt to spend the associated funds.

This is a threat to a signature scheme, not a general ability to reverse every part of a blockchain. It does not mean a quantum computer can simply rewrite transaction history, reveal every private key, or automatically defeat a cryptocurrency’s entire security model. The attacker would need the relevant public key, a suitable quantum machine, and the ability to complete the key-recovery attack in the circumstances that matter.
Is Bitcoin vulnerable to quantum computing now?
Bitcoin.org’s FAQ answers its question “Is Bitcoin vulnerable to quantum computing?” with this qualification: “However, powerful quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography do not yet exist.” That describes the present capability caveat on the FAQ page; it is not a prediction of when such machines will arrive.
No reliable arrival date is established here for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. A forecast should not be mistaken for a deadline, and the existence of quantum computers today does not mean they can perform the specific, large-scale key-recovery task described above. The distinction is between a possible future capability and a demonstrated present attack.
Nor is there a verified percentage of Bitcoin holdings that can be said to be at risk. Exposure depends on the keys and output types involved, as well as the capabilities of a future attacker. Without a dependable, dated dataset and a defined threat model, a single share of coins at risk would imply more certainty than is warranted.

Why public-key exposure time matters
BIP 360, a draft Bitcoin Improvement Proposal, separates quantum exposure into two broad cases: long exposure and short exposure. The distinction matters because an attacker’s opportunity to act is different when a public key remains exposed over an extended period than when it is revealed only while a transaction is waiting for confirmation.
Long exposure
Long exposure occurs when a public key is available to an attacker well before a transaction’s confirmation window. BIP 360 gives output types that expose a key and key reuse as examples of circumstances relevant to this category. The longer the key is exposed, the more time a hypothetical attacker would have to attempt key recovery before the owner moves or spends the funds.
BIP 360 proposes Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), an output construction that removes the key-path spend. The proposal presents this as a way to mitigate long-exposure attacks. It is not a post-quantum signature scheme, and the proposal does not establish that P2MR removes every quantum-related risk. In particular, its text treats short-exposure attacks as a separate problem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short exposure
Short exposure describes a public key becoming visible briefly while a transaction waits to confirm. In this case, the potential attack window is tied to that confirmation period. BIP 360 says protection against this class may require post-quantum signatures: signatures built on cryptographic assumptions intended to withstand attacks from quantum computers of the relevant kind.

This distinction prevents a common overstatement: changing how an output is constructed to reduce long-term exposure is not necessarily enough to protect a transaction during a short confirmation window. The proposal’s description is a design rationale, not proof that a particular mitigation has been implemented or tested against a future quantum attack.
What Bitcoin’s proposed mitigations would do
The proposals address different parts of the problem and have different status. Neither should be described as an active Bitcoin network rule. A proposal can inform technical discussion, but adoption requires decisions and implementation across the network ecosystem.
| Proposal or measure | What it addresses | Mechanism described | Status and limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIP 360: Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) | Primarily long exposure | Proposes an output type that removes the key-path spend | Draft proposal; does not by itself provide the short-exposure protection that may require post-quantum signatures |
| BIP 361: Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset | A broader transition away from legacy signatures | Outlines staged migration, including introducing post-quantum outputs and later restricting legacy ECDSA/Schnorr spends | Draft informational proposal; its phases and suggested timing are not an adopted network schedule |
| NIST post-quantum standards | Cryptographic algorithms, including digital signatures | Defines standardized post-quantum algorithms | Standards do not establish that Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency has integrated them |
BIP 360 and BIP 361 should not be collapsed into one solution. BIP 360 focuses on an output design intended to reduce long exposure. BIP 361 describes a wider migration concept in which post-quantum outputs would be introduced and legacy signature spending could later be restricted. The latter is a draft, so its staged approach is a proposal rather than a commitment by Bitcoin’s developers, miners, node operators, wallet providers, or users.
That coordination requirement is consequential. A network-level cryptographic transition would involve more than selecting an algorithm: software would need to support new transaction or output forms, wallets would need to create and manage them, and users would need a safe way to move funds. Any change that restricts old signature types would also raise questions about funds that have not migrated. BIP 361 outlines a concept for migration and legacy-signature sunset; it does not mean those steps have been approved or that a user should act on a proposed timetable.

What NIST’s post-quantum standards mean—and do not mean
On August 13, 2024, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology approved three Federal Information Processing Standards for post-quantum cryptography:
- FIPS 203 specifies a module-lattice-based key-encapsulation mechanism for key establishment.
- FIPS 204 specifies a module-lattice-based digital signature standard.
- FIPS 205 specifies a stateless hash-based digital signature standard.
The three standards are an important cryptography milestone: organizations can implement standardized algorithms rather than relying only on candidate designs. But publication by NIST is not a Bitcoin protocol change. The standards announcement does not say that Bitcoin has adopted these algorithms, and it does not settle which post-quantum signature scheme a cryptocurrency should use. Choosing and deploying a scheme involves technical and network decisions beyond the fact that a standard exists.
It is also important not to treat every listed standard as interchangeable. FIPS 203 addresses key establishment, while FIPS 204 and FIPS 205 specify digital signature standards. The Bitcoin risk discussed here is signature authorization and key recovery, so the existence of a key-encapsulation standard alone is not a direct fix for Bitcoin’s signature system.
Why other cryptocurrencies may face different questions
The Bitcoin discussion is a useful example, but it cannot be applied mechanically to every cryptocurrency. The relevant question for any network is which cryptographic signature systems it uses, when and where public keys are exposed, and whether its protocol and wallets can support a transition. The evidence summarized here identifies Bitcoin’s use of ECDSA and Schnorr signatures and describes Bitcoin-specific proposals; it does not establish the exposure profile or upgrade plans of every other cryptocurrency.
Best Value
For a different network, a sound assessment would need to identify its actual signature scheme and protocol rules rather than assume that its risks or remedies match Bitcoin’s. The general conditional mechanism—quantum key recovery against susceptible public-key cryptography—does not supply project-specific facts such as which assets are exposed, how many users are affected, or what upgrade is available.
What holders and developers should do with this information
For cryptocurrency holders
The sources cited here do not establish an immediate quantum attack or a current consumer action that neutralizes a protocol-level signature threat. A hardware wallet may help protect a private key from ordinary theft or device compromise, but it does not replace the cryptocurrency’s signature algorithm. Likewise, backups preserve access to keys; they do not make a vulnerable signature scheme quantum-resistant.
For now, avoid treating an alarming percentage, a precise attack date, or a proposed migration deadline as settled fact. Follow official network and wallet communications if an actual protocol change is adopted, and distinguish an implemented upgrade from a draft proposal. If a future network migration requires users to move funds or adopt a new output type, the relevant instructions would need to come from that network’s official channels and compatible wallet software.

The technical decisions are broader than choosing a post-quantum algorithm. Developers and ecosystem participants would need to evaluate which exposure classes are addressed, how new signatures or outputs affect transaction construction, and how users can migrate without losing access to funds. They would also need to communicate whether legacy signatures remain valid and under what conditions. BIP 360 and BIP 361 discuss parts of this landscape, but their draft status means they should be treated as proposals for consideration, not instructions for production deployment.
Bottom line
Quantum computing could threaten Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies if a future machine can derive private keys from exposed public keys using Shor’s algorithm. The immediate issue is the resilience of signature systems, with risk shaped by how long keys are exposed—not a proven ability to break blockchains today. Bitcoin.org says quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography do not yet exist; BIP 360 and BIP 361 are drafts, and NIST’s 2024 standards are not evidence of Bitcoin adoption. Any effective response will require a real protocol transition and coordinated implementation, not simply buying different consumer hardware.
