How Programmable Mouse Buttons Work in PC Games

A programmable mouse button sends a configured mouse input, keyboard key, or macro. Whether it works in a game depends on the mouse’s profile mode and the game’s input bindings.

Programmable mouse buttons let you assign a physical button a different mouse function, a keyboard input, or—in supported software—a sequence of inputs. The mouse or its companion software sends that assigned input; the game then has to recognize and allow it. That is why a side button does not automatically perform the same action in every game, and why setup depends on both the mouse and the game.

What “programming” a mouse button means

A programmable button is a physical switch whose output has been configured. Instead of sending only its default mouse-button event, it can send another mouse function, a keyboard key or combination, or a macro made from several events. The exact choices depend on the mouse model and its configuration software.

For example, you could assign a side button to send a keyboard key, then bind that key to an action in a game. Pressing the side button would then produce the same input the game uses for that key. This is a remap: one physical control sends a different, usually single, input. It does not make the game understand a new command by itself.

Some configuration software also offers media controls, shortcuts, hotkeys, and other assignments. Logitech’s software documentation lists these alongside mouse functions, keystrokes, and multikey macros. These are examples of options available in particular software, not a universal feature list for every programmable mouse.

Why extra buttons have no universal game action

Windows recognizes common extra mouse buttons as XBUTTON1 and XBUTTON2. Microsoft Learn notes that these buttons are often on the sides of the mouse near its base. Applications may use them for different purposes; browser navigation is a common example. A game may let you bind one directly, assign it a different action, or not provide a binding for it in its controls.

So “side button” describes where a control is, not what it must do. The game’s input settings determine whether its default mouse event can be assigned. If the game does not offer the event as a bindable control, remapping the button to a keyboard key the game does accept is one possible workaround.

What happens between a button press and an in-game action

The basic path is: configuration, button press, input sent by the mouse or software, operating-system handling, and finally the game’s input layer. The precise implementation varies by device and software. The important practical point is that the game receives an input, not the player’s intention. It can only act on controls its input system recognizes and supports.

  1. Assign: In the mouse maker’s software, select a button and choose the output it should send. Depending on the model, that may be a mouse function, key, key combination, or macro.
  2. Press: When you press the physical switch, the mouse or its software produces the configured event.
  3. Recognize: The operating system and game handle the exposed input. Microsoft’s GameInput documentation explains that a HID device’s report descriptor defines which buttons, switches, and axes are exposed through that interface.
  4. Bind or act: If the game supports that input, it can be bound to an action in the game’s controls. If the assignment sends a keyboard key instead, the game must support that key and it must be bound to the intended action.

This explains why a mouse configuration can appear correct while doing nothing in a particular game: the selected profile may not be active, the game may not recognize the output, or the control may not be bound to an action.

Remaps and macros are different

One button mapped to one input

A remap changes what a button sends. For example, a side button can send a keyboard key that you have already assigned to an in-game action. This can be useful when a game accepts keyboard bindings but does not expose the mouse’s extra button in its control menu. The game still receives the key input; the mouse does not add a new kind of game command.

One button sending a sequence

A macro is a sequence of events rather than a one-to-one remap. Depending on the software, it can include mouse events and keystrokes, delays between events, and repeat behavior. A press can therefore be configured to send more than one input, but the exact sequence options and behavior depend on the software and mode in use.

Do not assume that a macro configured on a desktop will work identically when the mouse is running from onboard memory. In its documentation for Logitech Gaming Software, Logitech says repeat options are unavailable in onboard-memory mode. That is a specific limitation of the documented software and mode, not a rule for every mouse.

Whether a game permits a particular macro is a separate question from whether the mouse can create it. The available documentation here does not establish macro rules or anti-cheat policies for individual games. Check the rules for the specific game before using automation, especially where a sequence performs repeated or multiple actions.

Software profiles versus onboard memory

These approaches solve different problems. A software profile lets the computer’s configuration software choose assignments, potentially based on the active game or application. Onboard memory stores supported settings in the mouse, so the saved configuration can travel with the device. A mouse may support one approach, both, or only some features in each; check the documentation for the exact model.

Configuration approach What it does Documented example and limitation
Application-specific software profile Configuration software can select different assignments for different games or applications. Logitech’s G600 documentation describes Automatic Game Detection and separate assignments. It says application-specific profiles do not work in onboard-memory mode.
Onboard memory Supported settings are written to the mouse rather than relying entirely on a profile stored in the computer’s software. Logitech says G600 assignments and DPI settings can be written to the mouse and used on another computer without additional software or configuration. That statement does not establish that every macro feature is stored or supported.

Logitech’s G502 support article provides another model-specific example: its documented onboard configuration can assign a mouse function, keystroke, or multikey macro to a button. The G600 and G502 examples show that onboard features differ by model; they are not specifications for all gaming mice.

The software references above include older Logitech Gaming Software workflows. If you own or are considering a particular mouse, use the documentation for that model and verify which configuration software currently supports it. Do not assume that a feature described for an older model or software version appears under the same menus—or works the same way—on another device.

How to bind a programmable button for a game

The exact menu labels vary, but this sequence covers the usual process. It combines the documented profile-and-assignment approach with the game’s own control binding; it is not a universal set of menu names.

  • Uncompromised Driver Support - 16 buttons including 12 side buttons and 16.8 million color lighting effects are all customizable with its own software, even in wireless mode. Ahead to the victory in your exactly wanted way.
  1. Open the mouse’s supported configuration software. Confirm that it recognizes the connected mouse. If the device is not detected, check that you have software intended for that exact model before changing assignments.
  2. Select the profile. Choose the default profile or create/select a game-specific profile if the mouse and software support per-application profiles. If automatic game detection is available, associate the correct game application as directed by that software.
  3. Choose the physical button. Select the side or other programmable button you want to configure, then assign a mouse function, key, key combination, or macro from the options actually shown for that model.
  4. Bind the output in the game. Open the game’s control or key-binding settings. Bind the mouse event if the game offers it; if you mapped the button to a keyboard key, bind that key to the desired action instead.
  5. Test safely. Try the control in a menu, training area, or other low-stakes setting. Confirm that the intended action occurs once and that other controls still work as expected.
  6. Check the active mode. If the assignment does not work, verify that the expected profile is selected and that the game is associated with it. If using onboard memory, check whether the feature you assigned is supported in that mode.
  7. Check portability separately. If you need the setup to work on another computer, confirm that the exact model stores the needed assignment onboard and that the particular feature works without its companion software.

When a programmed button does not work

  • The game ignores the side button: Look in the game’s control settings to see whether it accepts the mouse event. If it does not, try assigning a keyboard key that the game supports, then bind that key to the action.
  • The wrong action occurs: Check which output the mouse software assigns to the button, then check the game’s binding for that same input. A correct mouse assignment can still trigger an unexpected action if the key or mouse event is bound differently in the game.
  • The assignment changes when you launch a game: Confirm that the intended application-specific profile is active and associated with the correct game application. The G600 documentation’s distinction between application profiles and onboard-memory mode is a reminder that profile behavior can change with the selected mode.
  • A macro works in one mode but not another: Check the software documentation for mode-specific restrictions, including repeat behavior. Do not infer support for a macro feature from support for simple button remapping.
  • The setup works only on the configured computer: The assignment may depend on companion software or a profile stored on that computer. Verify onboard-memory support for the particular assignment before expecting it to travel with the mouse.

If these checks do not isolate the problem, test a simple one-button remap before troubleshooting a macro. A single key output removes sequence timing and repeat settings from the equation; then check whether the game recognizes and binds that key.

What to check when choosing a programmable mouse

If you want extra controls, compare models on the features that affect your actual setup—not just the number of buttons. Product descriptions should be checked against documentation for the precise model and software.

  • Button count and placement: Choose controls you can reach reliably without interfering with your normal grip. Extra buttons are useful only if they are practical to press and can be assigned in the games you play.
  • Profile behavior: Check whether the software supports game-specific assignments and how it selects the active profile.
  • Onboard support: Determine whether assignments are saved to the mouse and whether they remain usable on another computer without the configuration software.
  • Macro details: Confirm which event types, delays, and repeat options are available, and whether those features remain available in onboard mode.
  • Compatibility: Verify operating-system and software support for the mouse, as well as whether your game accepts the inputs you intend to assign.

“Programmable gaming mouse” is a useful category description, but it does not guarantee a specific number of controls, per-game profiles, onboard storage, or macro capabilities. Those are model-level features, not properties implied by the label.
