The lab-made material produced controllable color pixels, numerals and camouflage patterns. It is a squid-inspired research demonstration—not a commercial camouflage sheet or a copy of a squid’s biological system.
How pressure changes the membrane’s color
The membrane is made from a chiral nematic liquid-crystalline elastomer. Its internal liquid-crystal arrangement reflects particular wavelengths of light, producing structural color. Unlike pigment, which colors an object by absorbing and reflecting light according to its chemical composition, structural color arises from the material’s ordered internal structure.

Embedded inflatable air channels provide the actuation. When pressure changes, the membrane deforms, altering the rotation of the liquid-crystal directors—the directions in which the molecules are ordered. That change shifts the wavelength of reflected light, so the visible color changes. The mechanism is pressure-driven deformation of an engineered material, not a cell-for-cell reproduction of squid skin biology. The University of Pennsylvania team’s 2021 report and a later technical review describe this approach.

The 2021 report describes a stretchable membrane that could shift color across the visible spectrum as pressure changed. Demonstrations included individual color pixels, the numerals 0 through 9 and camouflage patterns. The team tuned pixel colors by changing the ratio of the supporting layer’s width to its thickness, allowing differently colored pixels to respond to pressure. The research report presents these as laboratory demonstrations.

A 2022 review reports that, in the underlying study, increasing pressure to 9.6 kPa shifted reflection from near-infrared to ultraviolet. That figure is the review’s account of a specific result; it should not be taken to mean that every pixel or camouflage pattern demonstrated the same full spectral shift. The review also describes multiple independently controlled air channels for matching patterned backgrounds.
How this work differs from other camouflage research
Cephalopod-inspired camouflage is a broader research area, not a single technology. Different systems use different materials and ways of changing appearance, so their results should not be combined as if they were one device.

What the applications mean—and what they do not
The research team suggested possible uses including cryptography, adaptive optics and soft robotics. These are potential research directions, not evidence that products for those uses have been deployed. The cited sources describe a laboratory platform and do not establish a consumer product, retail kit or field-ready camouflage sheet.
The results show that pressure can be used to tune structural color in a soft membrane and to create patterned demonstrations. They do not establish manufacturing readiness, durability, cycle life or field performance. Those details are not specified in the cited report-level information.

Why the squid comparison needs a qualification
Squid and other cephalopods can change appearance through biological structures and processes. The membrane described here takes inspiration from adaptive camouflage but achieves color change through a different route: air pressure deforms a liquid-crystal elastomer, and its internal structure changes the reflected color. Calling it “squid-like” describes the adaptive-color idea, not an identical biological mechanism.
