In a 2016 proof-of-principle study, the method detected changes in cultured mouse neurons; it did not establish how ageing diseases begin, diagnose patients, or provide a treatment.
What the “diamonds” are—and what researchers tracked
These are not gemstone diamonds. Fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) are tiny diamond particles whose nitrogen-vacancy centers emit light. Neurons in the study took up the particles inside vesicles, allowing researchers to follow those vesicles as they moved along neuronal branches.

That movement is intraneuronal transport: the movement of material within a neuron. Measuring it can help researchers investigate cellular processes relevant to neuronal function. The experiment examined transport, not the onset of disease across a person or population.
How the experiment worked
- Label vesicles: Researchers used FNDs that cultured neurons internalized in vesicles.
- Record motion: Video microscopy captured the labeled vesicles moving through neuronal branches.
- Compare experimental models: The team applied the assay to two transgenic mouse lines modeling modest changes in protein concentration associated with brain-disease risk factors, and reported transport abnormalities.
In its 2016 account, Chemistry World described the neurons as cultured from embryonic mice. It reported that researchers examined slight overproduction of an enzyme associated with autism in post-mortem brain observations and saw impaired transport within neurons. This was an experimental model of a risk-related change—not a test for autism and not proof that the enzyme change causes autism.

What the reported precision means
The authors reported that the probes’ brightness and photostability, together with the absence of cytotoxicity in their experiments, enabled tracking at 12 nm spatial resolution and 50 ms temporal resolution. These figures describe the assay’s reported measurement capabilities; they are not diagnostic accuracy or clinical performance statistics.
The study’s abstract describes the method as a way to measure changes in intraneuronal transport induced by brain-disease-related genetic risk factors. The primary paper was published online on 28 November 2016 and appeared in Nature Nanotechnology 12, pages 322–328 (2017): doi:10.1038/nnano.2016.260.

What the findings do—and do not—show
- They show: FND-based microscopy could measure transport in cultured neurons and reveal abnormalities in two experimental mouse models involving modest protein-concentration changes.
- They suggest: A sensitive way to quantify small transport changes may help researchers investigate cellular mechanisms and study the effects of experimental perturbations.
- They do not show: That transport disruption is the universal cause of neurodegenerative or ageing-related diseases, that the assay can diagnose people, or that it is an established clinical or drug-screening tool.
The relevant distinction is between observing a cellular change in a model and establishing what causes disease in people. The paper supports the former; it does not establish the latter.
Why the next step was closer to real brain tissue
The work used dissociated, cultured neurons rather than an intact living brain or a human clinical setting. As Chemistry World reported in 2016, co-principal investigator François Treussart said the next step was to get closer to the real brain, beginning with transport in thin brain slices. That proposed direction underscores the gap between a cell-culture assay and measuring transport in a more complex brain environment.

Where this method fits
Fluorescent nanodiamonds are research probes in this context, not therapeutic materials. Their value here is the possibility of tracking motion with high reported spatial and temporal resolution while remaining bright and photostable in the experiment. For any particle-based tracking method, researchers also need to consider how cells take up and handle the label, potential toxicity, and whether measurements in the chosen experimental system answer the biological question.
The 2016 study is best understood as a preclinical proof of principle: it demonstrates a measurement approach in neuron models and points toward further mechanistic research. It does not establish a validated method for patients or a broad explanation for diseases of ageing.
