White House press access is not one pass that guarantees entry everywhere. Regular correspondents can apply for a hard pass; reporters without one may seek a day pass for a specific day. Credentials and security screening are separate from access to a particular event, a briefing-room seat, or a place in the rotating press pool.
Independent journalists and other creators producing news-related content were invited to apply under a White House announcement in January 2025. That opened an application route, not an automatic entitlement to credentials or seating.

How do journalists get a White House press pass?
For regular access, journalists may apply for a hard pass through the White House Press Office. The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) says applicants undergo a background screening by the U.S. Secret Service. The available descriptions do not establish a complete current checklist, a processing time, or a guarantee of approval.
There is an important qualification about eligibility rules: in its April 8, 2025 opinion in Ateba v. Leavitt, the D.C. Circuit described the policy being challenged as requiring accreditation by a congressional or Supreme Court press gallery. That is the court’s description of the policy then under review; it should not be treated as a complete statement of every current application requirement.

Can independent journalists get a White House press pass?
Yes, they were invited to apply. On January 29, 2025, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced an application path for independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers, and content creators producing news-related content. She said the White House would review applications and issue credentials to applicants who met its criteria and Secret Service requirements.
That announcement means eligible news-content creators could apply; it does not guarantee approval, hard-pass issuance, daily access, or a particular briefing-room seat. The announcement does not supply a complete current list of criteria or processing times.

Can reporters without a hard pass enter the White House?
They may seek a day pass for a particular day, but it is not automatic. In describing the policy under review in April 2025, the D.C. Circuit said reporters without hard passes could use a day pass and quoted the requirement to “resubmit [a] form for every day they plan to access the Press Area.” That is the court’s account of the policy at that time, not confirmation of today’s form or application instructions.

Does a press pass guarantee access to every event or briefing-room seat?
No. A credential, security clearance, event entry, briefing-room seating, and press-pool assignment are distinct decisions. A credential does not itself promise access to a controlled event; entry can depend on security and event arrangements.

The WHCA says its board has assigned briefing-room seats since the Reagan administration. The smaller rotating press pool covers events where space is limited. A hard pass does not entitle its holder to a particular seat or a place in the pool.

On April 8, 2025, the D.C. Circuit rejected Simon Ateba’s facial challenge to the hard-pass policy. That ruling addressed the facial challenge before the court; it is not a universal resolution of every later access dispute or every individual application.

In September 2026, the White House said CNN, MS NOW, and Politico had been removed from White House grounds. A September 24 report said a federal judge later issued temporary relief requiring their access to be restored for 14 days. That report describes temporary relief, not a final judgment. It does not establish what happened after the order’s 14-day period, so the outlets’ subsequent access status and any later proceedings cannot be stated here as settled.
